Complete CD-ROM-images with setup files intact
I understand that GOG doesn't want to get involved with technical support for MSDOS or Win98, but all I ask is that they include the original disk images. That way, those of us who have the means to do so, will be able to install and play these games in their native environment.
I find that I am discouraged from buying Win9x games on gog because of this issue. I want to play those games on my Win98SE retro gaming system, but the gog versions are generally not installable to this OS, despite the fact that the original game releases ran on it natively.
Windows 98 is the most popular OS of choice for retro PCs that are built to play legacy DOS and Win95/98 games in their native environment. Win98 can play those games with the real hardware and OS environment they were designed for, providing a completely authentic experience with no need for emulation. Many enthusiasts maintain a Windows 98 gaming system.
If I knew the gog releases would include an original disk image, so that I could install it on my legacy gaming PC, I'd be more motivated to collect those games. I would not expect gog to assist with troubleshooting, just provide the original disk images is all that I ask.
If there's some sort of legal problem with the disk images, then at least please leave all the original setup configuration files intact. GOG versions of MSDOS games frequently are missing their original setup utilities like "setup.exe", etc. This makes it difficult or impossible to configure them when copied to a real DOS machine.
I'd love to have complete versions of games as an alternative download from GOG. Since I am one of those nuts who never throws anything out, I still have my old 486 and early 200MHz and 400MHz computers, and enjoy occasionally playing older games on them.
I support this! I play most GOG games on original, old hardware. I know I'm not the typical GOG customer but it's a shame that you pay for a product and get a "lesser" version most of the time compared to just pirating it.
Would appreciate CD images for the sake of completeness. Ideally, GOG would offer games as CD images with an official NoCD "crack", and possibly patches or GOG installers that rely on the image of the original CD. May not always be feasible, though.
