I think a new version could well sell (over time) 10s of thousands of copies - the old ones are so fondly remembered. Tie-Fighter is still in my Top 10 All Time PC classics alongside Ultima 7, Underworld, Freespace 2 etc...

Even a modded Freespace version would be nice :-)

But imagine using the Star Citizen or Elite engine for this? I'd want the option of various flight models though: Newtonian, Elite-style and original (which was based on 'Battle of Britain' and 'Secret Weapons' and was limited and based on atmospheric fighters)...

It's obviously true, like people say, that Lucasarts titles are generally speaking not available and off limits.

However. In the case of Tie Fighter, before the polygon engines, there could actually be some sort of opportunity for a creative solution. The thing is that the polygon version of the games, that ran on a variant of the x-wing vs. tie fighter engine, and like Alliance and xvst did afterwards, aren't really that good.

At the same time, Lucasarts essentially obsoleted the real collector's edition version of Tie Fighter that was any good, namely the Tie Fighter Collector's CD-ROM, that ran in glorious 640x480 high resolution (hd, baby!), and used goroud-shading for the objects to create the stunning and slow transitions from far to close approach of objects, and so on.

There were many reasons for that, I think, including the difficulty of selling a dos-based game at the time. The old engine also depended on a lot of weird hardware trickery, and I don't think it's an unreasonable guess that a little bit of the motivation to replace it came from that.

This brings us to the point in question, namely that whoever holds the license at the moment - wouldn't they be willing to sell it for that specific game, if it's a new studio creation, remastering the old engine with the goroud-shading graphics?

I mean, consider this - these are projects that very likely still exist in terms of toolchains and source code. And while it'd be a lot of work to truly "upgrade" the game, actually making the engine as it is compatible with a more modern rendering pipeline -- that's not a very large project in comparison.

Furthermore - it should be an easy sell. Like we see, there's some interest in the game. But it's in a category of games that has been dead (since I-War and I-War2), and which won't be resurrected any time soon by the large companies anyway.

And yet, it's a good way to make some splash with new Star Wars titles. Which I'm sure whoever holds the license.. Mickey Mouse or something, I don't know.. will be interested in paying a paltry sum for.

I think this should be something gog.com might want to at least think about pursuing.

But make sure it's the real version of the game, and not the polygon horror Lucasarts tried to push down people's throats.

As far as I remember- "TIE Fighter" was the foundation of this very site. It is a shame that we cannot buy this incredible gem of electronic etertainment i it has to be dealt with!

Lucasarts games probably won't be coming for some time since Disney bought Lucasarts and closed them down in April 2013. Lucasarts site is though still online. Here link to the gameinformer article about the closing of Lucasarts: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/04/03/disney-closes-game-publisher-lucasarts.aspx

Tie Fighter would complete the group of flight sim games that I did not live without when I was younger. The others being Wing Commander (pretty much the whole series) and Freespace 2. I think the entirety of high school was spent playing these games over and over again for me.

Tie-Fighter and it's expansions are one of the best PC games of all time! Why Lucas Arts never updated and re-released it is a mystery. A few years ago Lucas Arts announced they were brining back some of their old games (Monkey Island). They had to issue a statement that it would not be an XvT game! That's how popular these games are! Please GOG, get Tie Fighter for me!

PLEASE help me spread this post:
Disney -
IF you release TIE Fighter, PLEASE correct a mission that was bugged out.

There are a series of Missions where you pursue a Mon Calamari Star Cruiser. In the First Mission you disable it. In the second Mission you are in a Gunboat and you are sent to destroy its defenses.

The secret mission objectives require you to destroy all of the Veteran Flights on the Star Cruiser - a total of 60 ships.

A BUG in all of the early releases had the Disabled Mon Calamari Star Cruiser enter hyperspace after 99:99 minutes. It would then return after 1 minute. This is a bug that was fixed in the very last patch which removed the Hyperspace timer.

The problem is the very last patch has NOT been included in ANY of the recent releases of TIE Fighter.

The absence of this patch, allowing the Star Cruiser to Warp out after 99m:99s makes the secret mission objectives impossible to complete (as it requires you to destroy 60 ships in 99 minutes - or 1 ship per every 1m 20 seconds - a physical impossibility). Even though the ship would hyperspace back in after 1 minute, the veteran ships will not launch after it left and came back.

PLEASE FIX THIS IF YOU RELEASE THIS AGAIN! PLEASE RESTORE THE FINAL PATCH!

IF you lost the Final Patch, then PLEASE correct this error.

KEEP in mind that the ships engines are irreparable, they are NOT supposed to hyperspace out at all.

Please copy paste this message to make sure it's read by those in charge.

I would like to see more Lucasarts licensed games, period. They have actually quite a few in the 1990-2000 date bracket, with X-Wing/TF being in my opinion their "flagship" releases.

I wonder how hard it is to add a game like this for the GOG team... I know very little about how this whole process works but it seems like it could be very lucrative. This post already has `3,800 posts, if each person got the game at $10 thats $38,000! Idk I just hope they can make it happen! :D

It would definitely be important to preserve the DOS versions, because they use a much more dynamic MIDI music engine than is used in the Redbook CDDA based Windows ports.

Why is this still not on GoG? I've been waiting for it ever since I first heard of this website <3 And there's enough to keep me busy here, but the chance to finally play the full version ever since I had gotten that Lucas Arts archives vol 1 for our now old macintosh... I've played that demo to death. Instant buy for a lot of people GoG! <3
