The only reason why I found GOG.com is this game. I heard a lot of good things about System Shock and I want to play it as soon as possible before playing system Shock 2.

I really wish this game to be added in the GOG's current game rooster, but, this game is well known for being absurdely difficult to run on any system, a fact acknowledged even by its very own creators. I myself have tried to run it emulated many times. eventuelly running in to some hard crashes, which required DOSbox to be completely wiped out and reinstalled to a pristine condition. Really really difficult game to emulate, by any means...

If GOG managed to get the second game released, what is barring them from releasing the first? doesn't that insurance company they made a deal with hold the rights to the first?

Another stage in the war against finding all the rights for a game so that it can be re-released - looks like the original System Shock is next in line. I hope whoever sees the success of SS2 on here and who owns the licenses to the original game realizes that they can make a profit if they only re-released this game to the online market for legal DDL.

An odd situation. I still just can't get over the notion that under current copyright law, someone can "own" an idea they had NO part in creating, just because they "bought" the entire "concept of creation" from someone.

I looked into a link someone sent me regarding this "freeware", and unfortunately it doesn't check out. According to that "portable system shock" FAQ, they're just running under the assumption it's okay until someone says otherwise, instead of the assumption that it is not okay until someone says otherwise.

Despite the game is kind of freeware today, i would buy it if you can make it run with the original music, the DOSbox emulated version has some problems with this...

GOG's current statement that SS2's story can stand on it's own is true. True, but still doesn't take into account the full story being enjoyable too. That said, I don't think GOG is resting on their laurels here. A statement like that is pretty much just PR speak so they don't have to make any promises they may not be able to keep. I'm sure they are attempting to get the rights to the original as well. I only wish I knew who exactly hold the remaining rights so we knew who to letter bomb with pleas.

Well, I bought SS2 but I wait and get my hand off the start button. It would be logical to play through this amazing story from the beginning. So System Shock ONE is more than needed. And I won't use all of these pirate-fan ports and stuff, I hope GOG looks from time to time on Wish Request Counter...:)

GOG, I thank you so much for reactivating the fight against Shodan, however I and many others on this site do yearn to travel back even further to the first System Shock. It would be nice to play it safely on a modern system rather than risk downloading a virus infested pirated dud. Many many props to bringing back Thief, unreal, and MDK, seriously. You've made my day, from the bottom of my geeky heart, thank you.

Yeah, really don't see why this isn't already out, surely the same guys own the rights to both SS games? Or are they waiting to see if SS2 sells as much as they'd hoped before bothering to make SS work?

> What we'd like is for SS1 to be available legally. Just about everything is available free of charge if you know where to look. :P This is the point that the people owning the IP for System Shock need to understand. They are making nothing from it and they could be making something but, what they could make gets smaller the longer they wait.

The rights to SS2 were held by many people, which is why it took so long to re-release. SS1 is and has been available free of charge.http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=211.0

Simply the best cyberpunk game out there! This game really gives you the creeps. Dark, narrow corridors, with lots of horror. I think the visuals are extremely well done here. Textures are well drawn and enemies are based on photographs of real humans and various clay models which are then photoshopped into something else. System Shock 2's primitive 3D can't match the fine 2D art of the first System Shock. It's just that much more alive even today.

SS1 is my all times number one. I clearly remember the depth sensations I experienced while playing it through its ending. In fact, SS2 was a kind of deception for me, given the brilliant plot in SS1 compared with the "forced" and "unclear" plot in SS2. Sorry, won't buy SS2 again (still have it original) but I'd die for having a properly working SS1.

Now that System Shock 2 is here. Hopefully GoG will have some luck getting System Shock 1 for sale. Personally, I like to play the earlier games in a series first, even if there is no real story leading from the first to second. This would be my number 1 requested game.

Here you can post your "claim" to the IP owners:http://www.meadowbrookinsgrp.com/claims.htmlFrom the G4TV article regarding IP rights: "As Spector had mentioned, an insurance company got the rights to System Shock after Looking Glass Studios shut down. I tracked down the insurer, Star Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Michigan-based Meadowbrook Insurance Group, Inc., and confirmed that the rights are available for sale. George Borkowski, an outside counsel for Meadowbrook, said the company would consider selling the rights to a game publisher or developer. "The idea would be to enter into some kind of arrangement where the game would be developed and that Meadowbrook would be compensated,” he said."

I got the CD version of System Shock when it first came out; it was genuinely amazing. I still have clear memories of crouching in a dark room, hearing ominous noises from nearby, while listening to the audio-log of one of the stations former inhabitants, listening to their final moments...it was truly haunting. I loved the sense of freedom you had while playing the game, as well as the excellent upgrade system which (while I also love System shock 2) was far superior to that found in SS2. All in all, it remains a truly unique game. It is a pity that the so many games developers have given up on being adventurous and fallen prey to the "more of the same" mentality that currently dominates.
