Umm just for your information...the game still has a commercial licence and thus is not legal to distribute with out the licence-holder's permission, be it if they pursue legal action or not. Free distribution is not under fair use nor is it endorsed by the licence holders. System Shock Portable is not abandonware. The term does not constitute any distribution permission of any sort. The game still has a commercial status. Acquiring a physical copy of the game is still the only way to legally own a licence to it.
I'd like GoG to add System Shock also.
I'm pretty sure I've downloaded it somewhere else for free. Would be cool, if GoG did offer it, too. (Either for free or low budget.)
"System Shock Portable", as stated before, is an easy-to-find version of this game for free. If there are no legal issues with it, I'd say bringing it to be a freebie on GOG would be INCREDIBLE-everyone needs to experience that game.
@classicsftw: Looking Glass was an independent studio. Eidos (Square Enix) would not own the rights to System Shock 1.
Just finished this via System Shock portable, it's bloody awesome. Not for the feint of heart though.
I'd love to play this one. Please, GOG ;)
Why is there a need for SS1?!?! you can have it for FREE! Just search for "System Shock Portable" and you're set ;D
Please bring this to GOG!! I would love to play the original game.

If not selling it for price, just put it on here for free. Right? And just make it functional for Windows 7 and Mac users (if you can with Mac).
This article might explain the difficulty in detail. If it's true the insurance company wants cash per game sold, I can understand why it hasn't come out yet. Abandonware is kind of a gray area. Pretty much either no has picked up the rights or has the finances to defend said rights (out here in the US "justice" has to be paid for before law is effected often. In the case of civil cases, it's pretty much every time). The portable version may not entirely be legal but downloading a copy might convince the current rights holders to sell the license in a more traditional and sensible way rather than to try and gouge distributors (as the value of the game goes down from people having a copy by whatever means).
Here is the disclaimer from Looking Glass: "We distribute these games here free of charge, but we do not claim to hold any rights to them. To the best of our knowledge they have been long discontinued by their publishers and are not being sold anymore. " https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=20nq2i613hk443qjg2gfrm6op6&topic=686.0
It seems that there is nothing legally stopping GOG from putting that game here. The game is available in www.systemshock.org as an abandonwere, nobody have claimed any right since then. Maybe they are afraid that one day someone will claim it and win a lawsuit.
Puppy eyes: System Shock?
PLEASE add it! I want a definitive patched updated easy to download + run version and YOU folks are just the ones capable of making it happen! Long Live GoG <3
This game should be on gog.

I got the CD version of System Shock when it first came out; it was genuinely amazing. I still have clear memories of crouching in a dark room, hearing ominous noises from nearby, www.moredz.com while listening to the audio-log of one of the stations former inhabitants, listening to their final moments...it was truly haunting. I loved the sense of freedom you had while playing the game, as well as the excellent upgrade system which (while I also love System shock 2) was far superior to that found in SS2. All in all, it remains a truly unique game. www.pretey.com is a pity that the so many games developers have given up on being adventurous and fallen prey to the "more of the same" mentality that currently dominates.
still waiting for system shock 1 + free mouselook mod i know its "free" to download but please gog make this happen NOW ____ is the system shock 1 ip owned by other people than system shock 2 ?
I'm sure GOG's staff have been fighting for this one, and I wish them the best as they continue. Finding a print of this game is pricey (let alone something complete), which is a shame because a game of its pedigree and age shouldn't have such a steep barrier for entry. This is evidenced even down below where a multitude of users are talking about downloading it for free, despite the legality of such actions. There are undoubtedly a lot of people who would love to see this, nice and cozy with its successor--but hey, people said it would be nearly impossible to get the 2nd, right? An extra incentive would absolutely be the old Mac version which is nearly impossible to run by even online--print or code, but would likely be easy to prep for modern Mac users.
I am a huge fan of System Shock 2. I am getting the first one. Please add it here too GOG.
Wow.I dont ever see that system shock 1 is not on GOG.
Putting on the second game in the series but not the first one? GOG, come on, we need this too!
Just do a search for System Shock Portable, like mduncan mentioned. I tried it yesterday, and it works fine. It's also got higher-resolution textures, and an optional mouse-look mod that works pretty well! So yeah, readily available for free all packaged up, but I'd still like to see it here.
If it weren't for the extremely difficult legal situations behind games like this, we would already see this game available on here - hopefully we'll eventually see issues like this resolved sometime during the next decade. It might be a long wait, but I really hope that many more classic and "classic" games make their way to GOG.com over the next years.
There seems to be no legal way of acquiring this game right now, despite it being a widely claimed classic. While this is a very weird situation in the first place, GOG could certainly try to fix that.
Someone was offering a download of SS1 called System Shock Portable. It was setup to run in Dosbox like GOG releases. One a side note, the Crusader games make reference to Citadel Station and a new and powerful Ai called SHODAN. This is mentioned in one of the original game inserts; the news letter I think.
Just saying, it's pretty easy to get SS1 for free. I forget what link I used, but you can definitely get it running in DOSBOX for no charge.
AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE WHO WANTS TO PLAY THE FIRST ONE BEFORE PLAYING THE SECOND?!?! Seriously, if that game has ANY merit for providing a story and an experience, then why would I want to play them out of order? I WANT TO PLAY THE FIRST ONE FIRST!
Yes yes yes. I LOVED ss2. I want to play SS.
It is surprising to me that SS2 was released on GOG first, and despite the fact that SS2 is an awesome and disturbing game, we need the original game on GOG, we (including those who have only played SS2 like I have,) need the tale of the Hacker and his battle against the evil AI Shodan on Citadel Station on GOG, believe me, SS1 needs to go on GOG.com now, because it will be interesting to see where it all began. I hope you have a pleasant day on Citadel Station...
Playing SS2. Really, really, really want to play the first! SHODAN backstory please!
Best game ever, with 2 also :D
I'd really like to play this. And now that you've got SS2, everyone will want to buy SS1!
Mac version, please.
Have mi vote
I would like to play the game that inspired Ken Levine and influenced modern story driven first person games.
Please try and get the Floppy & CD version. ^_^
We need it!
Please add the first System Shock game in both floppy and CD-ROM way, i know the second one is better, but i would rather to with the first one, first!
A classic shooter indeed.
Here are a couple of links concerning the rights to System Shock. They have been posted before but it seems this information gets buried every so often. Most of the story pertains to whether we would ever see a sequel get developed, but there is mention about GOG getting the rights to sell the original. As far as who owns the rights to System Shock the original game, I'm not 100% sure. An insurance company bought the copyrights when Looking Glass went under, but EA maintained the trademark to the System Shock name. So the trouble for GOG may be that both are needed to actually sell copies of the game. I'm guessing that System Shock 2 was not split up this way so getting it here was easier. http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=2981.0 http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/713030/the-lost-history-of-system-shock/
Yes! Played System Shock 2 for the first time ever recently (what a game!) and would love to try the original on this site.
Let's us collect full franchise plz , please bring it back to GoG and Steam !! Go go go !
this should have come with the second game.
I Agree with the previous. Great Game should be added to this site
I've bought and rebought both System Shocks so many times that I probably have at least 3 CDs of the first one. I think one is still in shrinkwrap as an emergency copy. Anyway, yes, another vote to bring this one to GOG. If they do, I would love for them to include the mouselook hack that is part of the "portable" version, as it is the one thing missing from the original that makes the gameplay perfect.
