SSI AD&D Gold Box series

Added byDCT's avatarDCT

I know Pools is on here but I'm not sure they mean the original or the one Atari did. So I figured I would just do one for the whole Gold Box line: Pools of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness, Champion's of Kyrnn, Death Knights of Kyrnn, Dark Queen of Kyrnn, Gateway to the Savage Frontier and Treasures of the Savage Frontier. Maybe if it's possible throw in either the Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures(a gold box engine construction kit) or the Buck Roger's games(countdown to doomsday and Matrix Cubed) as a bonus game since they also use the same engine.

Some of the SSI devs have formed a new company http://tsi-games.com/, and looks like they're working on something that may be like the Gold Box games (so I hope)

Please release this either alone version or as a gold box game version (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, and Pools of Darkness. Would also love to see the Dragonlance games that were gold box "Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krinn, and The Dark Queen of Krynn. As well as the Savage Frontier series " Gateway to the Savage Frontier and Treasures of the Savage Frontier" as well as a few standalones such as "Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures". These were all GOG claasics and deserve to be on GOG and I for one would buy them so I could play them again!! (I just can't get dosbox to work for me). Thank you very much!!

These games all run perfectly well on DOSBOX and Boxer on the Mac. It would be child's play for GOG to package them.

I owned most of these on the C64 and Amiga and loved them, still have them in storage, though the computers no longer are among the living. I would love to play these again and would prefer to play them with the gog.com treatment.

I still own them all on CD-rom, but would gladly pay for them again just to keep them alive and working on modern OS. I know people want them all But the best six were, the 4 on the Moon Sea ( Pools of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness) & the two on the Sword Coast ( Gateway to the Savage Frontier and Treasures of the Savage Frontier).
Start there if you need guidance for sales.

I got Champions of Krynn on the C64 when it first came out. I was very young and was having (a hell of a a lot of) trouble reading (was 9 or 10 years old). Mum was sitting with me as I loaded the game the first time. She said she knew the Dragonlance world.

Well, I got to a keep....met Tass and Caramon...she said "Hey I know them! They are in these books that I read." So I kept playing. I sort of liked the two of them and enjoyed the game a lot. So I asked mum to show me where she kept the book she talked about.

The first book I ever sat down to read started with an old dwarf leaning up against a rock. He was carving a shapeless lump of wood.... :D

These were the biggest RPGs of the time when I was young and I only ever got to finish Pool of Radiance. The combat system was a game all on its own included with the exploration and questing. They may be battle-heavy dungeon crawlers but they were GREAT at what they did. Would love the chance to take another crack at them, here's to hoping!

My first RPG was POR back in 1990 on a XT. Was a bit too hard for me at the time so I abandoned it at Tyranthraxas' castle and turned Curse of the Azure Bonds. Finished that and then the first of the Buck Rogers games. Also finished Champions of Krynn before my XT gave up on me and I couldn't play the rest of the games(had 5 1/4 inch disks). Couldn't afford a new PC until 1995 and by then the CD drive was becoming standard with a 3 1/2 inch drive for floppies and so I couldn't play them anymore. The Gold Box engine games still hold a special place in my heart and I would LOVE to see them on GOG! Even the annoyances like chasing down fleeing enemies at the end of a battle make me chuckle now. There's nothing like launching a fireball spell in the middle of 100 Kobolds though! :)

Yes please: while not as popular as other games, this series of games really defines the "good old games" website philosophy :).

At least, since it's the subject of discussion on a lot of CRPG forums, could you please clarify what's the situation when it comes to who's holding the rights to it? Thanks :)

Trouble is with some earlier gold box engine adventures (particularly Buck Rogers), is they are unplayably fast on todays machines so a DOSBOX/MoSlo (slo mo?) arrangement would be needed?

This would be a great addition. I actually have the whole gold box series on CD (all 9 games, which I think might be pretty rare), but a ready to go version for modern machines would be great.

I wishlisted these over a year ago, and for a long time we held our breath as the status was "in progress". Now that original post seems to have vanished, even though it's quite clear that this would be one of the most popular releases GOG could make.
Please GOG, can we have some feedback?

Oh, and while they should run under DOSBOX, trying to configure it to recognise the arcane way the PC versions looked for savegames is a nightmare (unlike the Amiga or C-64 versions), so even though I have almost all of these in their original form, I would happily pay for the set again if GOG worked their magic and supplied these in their "ready to run" wrapper.

My cousin and I spent literally weeks of our lives (if you add up the time spent - possibly a month) playing Pool of Radiance when we were very young. Even now, into our 20s, we talk about Pool of Radiance with a reverance. One of the most poorly balanced (IE: nearly impossible to win) but fun RPGs we've ever played.

I would pay for these games in a heartbeat.

I would buy this in a heartbeat, as for the codes many of the anniversary editions just gave sheet with codes rather than a wheel. Though the wheel would nt be an issue for most of us asking since we still have all our stuff and I even have all the clue books!

As for rights WOC and Atari didnt own the rights when they aquired TSR it was already at SSI ie Ubisoft, so I do not think that would an issue, it would be is Ubisoft would release it after all be have all of the Bioware D&D games.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to play all these games again. Got the gold box and many other single games but all/most are on 5 1/4 floppies so I'm screwed. I'm guessing it is hard for gog to get them since they will be encumbered by multiple rights holders. Also, many of the older ones like pools of radiance had code words used throughout as copy protection which is impossible to strip out, so some sort of virtual wheels would need to be provided.
