Some good news; a week ago I bought "Age of Empires: Collector's Edition" that includes AoE, AoE:RoR, AoE2, AoE2conq along with the soundtrack, in a DVD. It is marketed as "Ubisoft exclusive" and costed 7euros (10dollars). It doesn't ask for any kind of internet connection and once installed, doesn't need the DVD on drive so i guess it's already DRMfree. Games are fully patched, but neither XP or win7 are listed as compatible. However, AoE+RoR run flawlesly on my win7/sandybridgei5/nvidia640m laptop, and only a minor colour fix needed for AoE2/conq. I haven't checked any multiplayer options but honestly the games look identical to the ones i used to play in win98 with a Direct Serial Connection [!!!]. Needless to say I've been playing ALOT :) So, to conclude, maybe a GOG release for those unlucky to find the retail edition (8euros!!! that was crazy) isn't that hard anymore.

I guess I'll still be using my old discs to play this. Would definitely buy again if it was on GOG (for an easier install and additional backup). I don't buy any "old classics" on Steam. Makes no sense to do so, IMO.

HD version has been announced. It's a Steam exclusive and it was developed by Hidden Path, which works closely with Valve. GOG version is basically out of the question now.

Have it on CD - would pay for a digital copy. Come on MS - at least distribute old classics digitally like Blizzard even do! Preferably via GOG though.

Would love to see this one as I spentcountless hours playing it and would happily spend hours more! One comment for msexton (asi felt frustated when I first looked at AOE 3 as well): Give it a chance. Yes, it os different from AOE 2 but they both have their merits. I love them both for their own merits.

This one and its expansion are about as good as it gets. I wish they could revamp AOE 1 so that it looks & plays like 2. 1 is too archaic and frustrating for me, but I love its campaigns, stories, & progression. 3 is a train wreck. If only they had stuck with this engine & gameplay, and just focused on polishing the graphics & AI, maybe add player characters, and more sensible in-game time, then the series would have been perfect. Instead they injected it with looney toons graphics & convoluted features that are more like work than play, abandoned the detail and hard work that made 2 shine, and generally destroyed the franchise.

Miss this game so much, I liked playing so many Custom Campaigns back in the day of the MSN Gaming Zone, and IGZ has a small cult following but I fell out of it now because of todays modern games. Wish GOG could bring it back along with a matchmaking service to bring back those classic matches

Also I should add that Ensemble is no more and I doubt Microsoft will do anything with this franchise (unless RTS miraculously become popular again...I hope so actually) so I don't know what sense it makes to leave the franchise in the cold when they could be making a nice little income from re-releasing the entire "Age of" series for 5 bucks each

Yeah this one, include the expansions with it and I'll buy this because I lost my original CD awhile ago now and only have the Conquerors :( A hallmark RTS for sure and led to their best work of all (imo), Age of Mythology
