Add option to move games to a different drive/partition
Steam and Xbox on PC offer simple solutions for moving games and in GOG we really need to copy our games like in 1986?
One thing is sure is so much better then anything microsoft makes ^^
I did buy halo infinite camagin on microsoft store. Eiter the mp or campagin did work. I did install the mp on steam and it just started. It was angry cause i did try to start it using microsoft stuff in like 8h -_-
Anyone have it ? well in my expirience they have it but it does not work ^^ I am now moving Cyberpunk form HDD to a m.2 SSD cause the updates takes ages ^^ Hopefully anything will end up good. If not i still do have a update that is 66 GB ^^
So funny reading those comments... After the solution was explained all "pissed" haters are gone
Actually it's already possible to move GOG games to another folder:
- close GOG Galaxy
- move game folder
- open GOG Galaxy
- find game in your list of owned games
- select "More > Manage installation > Import folder"
- choose the new folder
- done
what to add: it's ridiculous..
Still not implemented? Cmon guys, it's 2023
How has this still not been added since the 2016 initial suggestion XD
I second that, other stores have that since ages, as well!
When you going to add this option im severly pissed i have to move everything to my m.2 drive and fill that up just because cyberpunk is not recommended on an hdd, where nearly all my games are.
You can do this. I believe in you.
These days, you don't know what games need SSD, and what games can be played from microSD instead until the game is played.
one more
Aug 2023... this option still does not exist despite so many requests. SAD.
I'd love the option to move games I'm actively playing to SDD, or a better SSD. This should be a built in feature by now...
Steam*
Yeah, July 2023. Still no option. I mean if Styeam has it .... Ubisoft has it (locate game option), Blizzard has it .... you should too.
Now I may understand it's a development cost involved and a higher-up decision. What will it take? I mean some 10k signatures or maybe email to someone. What will it take to put "move game" option into the Galaxy software?
Thanks!
I am surprised that this is not the case. Learn from your competitor in terms of UI.
More and more people are getting SSD. You youself acknowledge it in the recent update to CP2077 requirements. Please allow us to move active games to SSD disk, and inactive back to magnetic. Current method is a workaround at best - it involves one galaxy restart, and one unnecessary integrity check (which takes quite a while on 70GB games, even when they are on SSD). Possibly forced update to latest version (previous galaxy version did this on import, not sure if it's still the case).
C'mon now devs, let's get on this!
While the "Move->Uninstall->Import" method can work, it is dodgy and can be an all-around HUGE pain in the butt. I tried it with a 30GB game which has one big 29GB file plus many smaller ones. It failed numerous times (E1 error) until I figured out that I first had to delete the hash and db files the Installer had created and THEN Galaxy obviously had to re-hash everything... including the 29GB file. NOT FUN!
The method posted by qpierce appears to work.
"You can. Just go "Owned Games", click the settings button that is to the right of the "Install" button, then select "Manage Installation", lastly select "Import Folder" & point it to the new drive location."
I ran the verify/repair afterwards.
agree
Agreed. How in late 2022 is this still not an option on GOG?
Things like this is why Steam is superior.
Please add this, such an obvious thing to add which would make life easier for game moves when you add additional drives to your PC.
It's still not a thing? Man...
Agreed. This is something that I cannot fathom in 2022. Why does anyone even need to worry about where something is stored, let alone have to go through so many awkward steps just to move it without having something go awry or work through a ton of other stuff. This should be simple. The game page should show where the game is located up front and let you click on it and it give the option to move it to a different drive or folder and let it do the rest. It should be that simple.
Just adding my 0.02 cents here. Having this function on the GOG client should be standard fare.
@Firyanis I've seen some ridiculous PC gamer elitism in my time, but "a convenience feature is bad because you're lazy" is up there.
WRT the original post - Steam absolutely has this option. You can make new Steam library folders anywhere, and then transfer a game between them. I do it all the time. Steam is the gold standard game client, but it also has a something of a different objective to GOG Galaxy.
@Firyanis Someone wanting a feature to make things easier is not being lazy. There are also other reasons to be concerned about just moving a folder. Does the game store information in the registry for example.
I would love to see this feature implemented. Similar to another commenter I just installed a new SSD to get some more space and was able to move all my Steam games with very little effort on my part but am going to have to spend more than an hour of my time to move my GOG games.
@ uwuerdinger : because PC gamers are not supposed to be lazy and can move a folder by themselves. Read the akil893 comment below, it is very simple, it works perfectly and it takes less than a minute to move a game.
It's 2021. Why is this still on wish list and not a feature?
@akil893 thank you very much! You helped me after many days of struggling.
This would be very helpful
@akil893 Thanks for the great directions!!!
Navigate to the location of your game folder.
Right-click the folder that contains your games -> click Copy.
Navigate to the location of your new hard drive -> create a folder for the games -> right-click an empty space inside it -> select Paste.
Open Galaxy -> uninstall the game/games you moved.
Click the GOG COM logo found at the top left of your screen -> select the Scan and Import option.
Once this process is completed, Galaxy will also repair the game.
I tried this I got it
This is a really needed feature. Maybe I am spoiled by Steam but I just installed an SSD just large enough for Cyberpunk and patches and I would like it to be seamlessly kept up to date with Galaxy.
I can do the whole manual install and import thing but I would much rather do it all in one go.
As soon as they add this feature i'll start using gog galaxy and switch gog to my preferred store.
You can. Just go "Owned Games", click the settings button that is to the right of the "Install" button, then select "Manage Installation", lastly select "Import Folder" & point it to the new drive location.
I have to support this idea.
I have many games that are on a hard drive. I'd like to move the one I am playing to an SSD for maximum performance (loads). When I am done regularly playing that game I would move it back to my collection on the HD.
I support this. Origin, Steam, Uplay can do it, even Rockstar, if I am not mistaken.
I just installed a 70 GB game to the wrong drive ... bummer.
Absolutely needed feature. Steam can do that. Still today SSDs are limited in capacity and even bandwith for downloads is often a limitating factor. So i like it to move downloaded but (now) no longer often used games to my HDD which has a much greater capacity. Maybe i want to play the game later. So in that case i have only to copy it back instead of download some gigabytes.
it is 2019, why is this not a feature?!
I'd love to have this option officially supported because, like others here, I have both an SSD and an HDD on which I install games. I like moving games I use often on the SSD to enjoy shorter loading times. It is something that Steam has been enjoying since quite some time now, and it would be awesome to have it available also for Galaxy.
Maybe this feature can be included with the next Galaxy client
Absolutely necessary feature when having both a SSD and a HDD. On Steam I install new games on my SSD for fast loading times, and after I finished playing them, I move them easily to my HDD.
Absolutely need a way to do this also, and I use this feature a lot with steam also now that it's in that client. Now that I have a dedicated SSD for some games it's gotten tedious for GoG installs. Uninstall then Reinstall, or copy the install directory over and have to manually rerun galaxy and re-import the moved folder. It would be much better for a single option in the manage installation menu to have a move to new location option and do the moving of the folder and importation with the galaxy client.
Would also love this feature. I have a lot of games. So I want to install them all to my large HD, then when I'm ready to play one I want to move it to my SSD and play it. Then move it back to my larger HD when moving on to something else. I can do this in Steam today. Would LOVE to be able to do it in Galaxy as well.
Same thing here! Really good games I never uninstall, I just move them to an external drive. I personally don't reconnect them to GoG from there though since it's not always plugged in, but whenever I want to play again, I play it off the drive or copy it back over to my SSD. Galaxy-support on this would rock.
Kind of parallel to this, I have multiple disks including an SSD. I like to put my active games on the SSD, while I am working through them. However it is very limited. This would make it so if I need a break then I can park the epic open ended world game on the external for a bit, and play some of the shorter clicky adventure games on my SSD.
