“Remember, the meek shall inherit nothing.” - The Book of Cataclysm
Congratulations on becoming our newest EuroCorp Executive! You now hold the distinctive honor of being one of the few who will determine the shape of our Company. Your EX-ALFA3 clearance allows you to use the Marionette Remote Drone Operation Suite. Your squad of Agents will follow every order without fail or question, and you are free to eliminate or destroy any targets as you see fit. This will serve you well as those zealots of the Church of the New Epoch think they can compete against our Company. Your mission is to remove them completely. To that end, we have transferred 50,000 EuroCorp credits to your account. Failure to use your funds wisely or to eliminate the competition will require you to auto-euthanize. We feel confident that your skills and integrity will ensure that this state of affairs will never arise.
The EuroCorp Board of Directors

If you need cannon fodder, why not set your Agents loose armed with Persuadertrons to control huge crowds, or even enemy agents, and get them to do the dirty work for you? So whether you’re keeping EuroCorp in the black or burning infidels for the New Epoch, Syndicate Wars will have you giddily carving a path to victory. If ever there was a game that caught the look, feel and atmosphere of Blade Runner and Neuromancer, this is it! One of Peter Molyneux' greatest games (before he became the über hyperbole-prone developer he is now). This game knows what it offers and does it well! A fantastic blend of tactics and RPG and science fiction! To some degree, Ground Control reminded me of this gameread more but it never fully achieved the cyber splendour of this action game. For those who don't know (or never came to know the golden age of gaming that was Bullfrog and Sierra) this game has you lead a group of genetically modified mercenaries that can be further modified (à la Deus Ex) as you progress through the game. Missions involve tactics, stealth, assassinations, killing and a healthy dose of blowing things up! Anyone partial to futuristic dystopias and Vangelis-inspired music will find themselves right at home. Absolute fun! This game has been on my GoG wishlist (along with System Shock 2) as my most anticipated gaming re-releases. GoG, I cyberly salute you! Wielkie dzięki!

Along with the original Syndicate, few games of old still make me want to open up a command prompt and type their names.
Syndicate Wars had awesomely beautiful graphics for it's time - which was only expected, after the first one.
SW takes a difference from the first in it's story: you have already gained dominance over the other Syndicates of the world, EuroCorp dominated theread more world, implanted everyone with their chips and all that. But someone thinks they can do better.
Enter the Church of the New Epoch, Zealots are their agents, and to burn EuroCorp and it's UTOPIA is their mission.
Will you be an EuroCorp executive, or a disciple of the Church?

Good things first. The music is pretty well done, and at the time of release the destruction effects and the atmosphere were quite something. The missions are varied and interesting, so that's definitely something that Wars did better than Syndicate.
So how does Syndicate Wars not hold up so well today? The most apparent thing is the graphics: it's an unclear pixelated mess, aread more trademark characteristic of the early 3D craze when every studio wanted to implement textured low-poly 3D graphics with scaled 2D sprites that were low-res to begin with. Just compare unscaled (=not GOG) screenshots of Syndicate and Syndicate Wars, both games even utilize the same resolution: one is æsthetically pleasing with every pixel in its right place (with only 16 colors used), the other is just ugly.
The action is quite the disappointment because people and vehicles are able to take way too much damage, which makes the weapons feel so much less satisfying than in the original Syndicate. It does add some tactical depth to research and taking on enemies, but it doesn't compensate for the apathetic feel of the combat. To add insult to injury, weapons picked up during a mission which you haven't researched yet are nearly useless.
I'd recommend people new to this game to read old, contemporary reviews and check out gameplay videos before making a buying decision. Syndicate Wars definitely hasn't become better with age, even though all the 5-star ratings on this site seem to suggest it.
