Simon the Sorcerer: good. 3D: bad.

Simon the Sorcerer 3D fell into the same trap that so many other game series fell for: the third dimension. At the time, it was the greatest technology bandwagon that everyone was compelled to jump aboard. Unfortunately, very few of them would survive the cliff drop at the end of the run. Nobody seemed to understand that as cool as 3D was, it was a step backwards in most cases. Simon 3D was no exception. Going from the rich detail of the 2D environments in Simon 2 to the crude, simple textures of a 3D realm was rather shocking. The game looks terrible! And with that came the bad controls and the dumb 3D-terrain-style puzzles that every other "cool" game had. They also went with the "bigger is better" concept and force you to do a lot of running around through the huge landscapes of blandness. And, of course, finding hidden stuff was brutal unless you already knew where it was. The only thing worse than pixel-hunting in a 2D game is meticulously searching in a vast 3D game for those small objects to get and tiny holes to crawl through. But the saddest thing about this is that if you can get past all that 3D ugliness, you'll find that Simon 3D is actually a great game! The story is good, the witty humor is still there, and the voice acting and music are top-notch. Even some of the more bizzare puzzles are well-done, the ones that follow the traditional adventure game style, of course. Just wait until you see how you use dynamite to go fishing, for example. It's the whole aspect of horribly implemented 3D, though, that's in your face all the time, and can probably ruin it for you. For me, it's another good/bad scenario for Simon 3D. Simon the Sorcerer: good. 3D: bad.

The game that should have stayed 2D

The game looks like it was programmed by amateurs using Dark BASIC. It plays like it too. Some funny moments, but only worth owning if you want every Simon the Sorcerer game. Otherwise, stick to the other two, they were brilliant. Avoid this one like the plague.

Actually good if you fix the game first!

Alright everyone, I'm here to save you all. You may be wondering, why are some people saying this game is great and underrated, and others say it's the worst game ever ? I'm gonna make it clear : - the base version looks awful - it controls like hell Now, the good news, is that you can fix it all. - The controls, install JoytoKey and remap the keyboard to your controller, it will now play like the old school classics from the playstation era, it's very comfortable and makes perfect sense that way. You can even "walk" or "run" like in the Resident Evil games. - For the graphics, you want to use DGVoodoo, this will rewrap the visuals into directX. This lets you get a high resolution, better filtering etc... And once it is rewrapped, you can use reshade. - What I did for my reshade on Simon 3D, is use a HD CRT filter (using CRT royal as the base + shadow grid, interlacing turned off), and adjusted levels / vibrance of colors until I was satisfied. You can also add some light film grain and/or CA to blend the image as intended by artists of the time. So once all this is done, what's left ? It's good, it's not perfect, but the spirit of the series is there, and many aspects are actually solid. If you are a fan, and like me, you had skipped this because of how bad you heard it looked or played, please give it a shot with those fixes. It's transformative.

Bent Spoon

Oh dear. Where to begin. I bought this game when it was first released, despite having read some really -really- terrible reviews. 'The interface is clunky' they said. 'The landscapes are vast, hideous and barren,' they said. 'And it's not funny, either.' How could I believe any of that, having played the first two games? Well, to cut it short, they weren't kidding. The developers had originally planned to stick to classic 2d, but changed tack mid-way : the game was in development hell until a few years after the success of Lucasarts' fantastic Grim Fandango, which boldy plunged the point-n-click adventure into half-3d whilst arguably heralding the beginning of the end for the 2d interface. You can see their reasoning for the change, but it's a terrible shame they didn't hold firm because Simon 3D is, without a doubt, the worst 3D adventure game I've ever played. I may have played it through to the end, I can't remember - I seem to be repressing the memory. If it's a choice between buying this for a fiver or downloading Beneath A Steel Sky for free, for the love of God don't buy this.

Graphics are not everything. Still...

Simon the Sorcerer 3D was a victim of the 3D craze that hit the world after FMV finally went away. The publishers wanted a full 3D adventure, so the developers took the challenge and dove into it Headfirst (the name of the new company founded by Simon the Sorcerer's creators) even if they didn't have any experience with three dimensions. Later they mastered them, creating the great underrated gem Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, but at the time... what a mess! Simon 3D was too big, too ambitious, and the result was a buggy, clunky game with amateurish graphics that were outdated even at the time. It felt like a prototype, so playing wasn't too pleasant! Still, this is part of the original Simon the Sorcerer trilogy. If you like the humour of the first two games, maybe you'll cope with all the ugliness in Simon 3D and see for yourself the real game buried into what looks like an 'alpha' release for a game that still needed a lot of work.
