Description
As the offspring of almighty Zeus, you demand a seat among the gods. But before ascending to the top of Mt. Olympus, you must first defeat some of the most powerful deities in the Greek pantheon. Such a task would be impossible for a puny mortal, but you wield the raw power of the universe in your hands, for you are destined to become a god! Learn to shatter the sky with lightning and shower the earth with fire. Summon heroes to aid your people, and plagues to destroy the enemy. Call forth tornadoes, hurricanes, tidal waves, and columns of flame.

The second installment of Bullfrog's Populous series follows the path set by its predecessor and remains one of the greatest god-games ever created. Populous 2: Trials of the Olympian Gods vastly improves the formula by adding new spells, better quality sound and graphics, and a character development system that allows you to customize your divine powers in any way you want. You really can’t go wrong with a game where you can kill gods, obliterate entire continents, and strike down upon the infidels with great vengeance and furious anger. Just as Peter Molyneux, those things simply never get old.
  • Greatly improved gameplay with many new spells, an enhanced interface, and a system for customizing your deity's awesome powers.
  • 1000 maps on which to wage your epic battles against gods and many different mythical creatures.
  • A great way to feed your desires to become omnipotent and maybe learn something about Greek mythology in the process.

Much, MUCH better than its predeccesor

While Populous 1 is a milestone and a classic of its own, Populous 2 is in every aspect the better game. Higher resolutions, better graphics, better defined interface, more god powers, more strategies, more, MOAR!! No, seriously. If you have to choose between Populous 1 and 2, choose the latter. If not, get both. The first for educational purposes (look, this game happened when Molyneux was AWESOME!) and much gameplay fun, the second for funnier and better gameplay fun. So, whatever you do, you do nothing wrong! You're a god, remember? :)

This time GoG disappointed me

I grow up with this game on Amiga and it's without doubt one of the best games I've ever played. Unfortunately, this porting for modern pc systems is worse than the original Amiga game: the sounds effect are nearly absent. Where si the heart-beating soundtrack? And above all: the rings and fanfares when the enemy casts a spell against you or summons an hero? Playing like this is useless: at higher levels you can barely notice if opponent casts you a volcano, unless you costantly keep an eye on the minimap. Such a pity...the game really doesn't worth being played in this way...

Sadly this is dos populous 2

The game is just bad. The thing is that this is dos version and not Win/Mac pop2. The game runs bit fast for fast computers. In the dos pop2 were not sound for enemy spells and when smaller gods come to the map like the amiga/win/mac version has.

More than just a retro game!

I played 58 hours of this game, I had never played it before I bought it on GoG. Once you realize you can turn the speed down in the options menu, the game is playable and you can play it at your own pace. I really enjoyed the time I spent in this game, and because the rules of the game change map to map, the gameplay never really gets stale.

Hope you have plenty of patience

I played this around its original release date. Didn't remember anything about it, so I decided to revisit it and picked it up on a recent sale. I played about first 300 or so stages of Conquest Mode, then skipped around using password lists online, then I gave stage 999 a few tries. First 100 or so stages are by far too easy, then the difficulty ramps up greatly. Not sure why they didn't go with a smoother curve. Winning advances you by 2 or more stages but you still advance by 1 stage when losing, so you can eventually reach the last stage even without looking up passwords. There are stretches in the game where you are forced to play the exact same gimmick over different stage layouts, for example, about 5-8 stages in the 240s IIRC against Iapetus where all you have are only Raise/Lower Land and Move Papal Magnet. I'm guessing that some of this is to ensure that you do land on these stages at least once due to how you can skip stages by performing well enough. It's really horrible if you really don't want to deal with that gimmick though. You'll also be fighting against very bad pathfinding. Getting your own people to leave their homes to settle new land or to attack nearby enemies in itself can already be a chore, they will sometimes just run around in circles, then return home despite there being an enemy or clear area to settle just nearby. You can use the Papal Magnet to work around this to some degree but that comes with its own problems, and there are stages where this is locked off. IMO the worst thing about this game overall is that your powers are restricted far too heavily in Conquest Mode since you only get to use whatever the stage allows, which usually is less than half of what's in the game. This also means the experience you dumped into your favourite tree is often worthless at times when the power/tree you invested into is not available. If you want to play with powers, you'll have to do Custom Mode. Do not recommend this unless on sale.
