Halloween isn't a festivity celebrated in my country and I have no special feelings towards it, no memories to longingly think about, no nostalgia-driven wonder. And yet I loved this game and felt like I was revisiting parts of my childhood. This is the true power of Costume Quest: it makes you feel like a kid again and brings with it that joy of donning a super-hero suit and becomingread more one in that magical way that only a kid's imagination can deliver and that we can all relate too, even if you did not do it on October 31. It is a colourful adventure with RPG elements that manages to transmit the love and wonder for Halloween put into it by the folks at Double Fine.
You play a brother or a sister who embarks on a quest to save his/her sibling kidnapped by candy-stealing monsters on that most magic of nights, the All Hallow's Eve. You will recruit other kids to aid you on your noble quest: knocking on doors all through suburbia, trick or treating your way into the monsters' magic homeland with the aid of some awesome costumes that you have to build out of everyday objects found throughout the map. During battle scenes, you will transform into whatever your cardbox/tinfoil/rags costume depicts and have basic moves as well as special ones for each costume to defeat your opponents (some are standard support characters, healing and buffing party members, other rely on attacking either through leeching life out of enemies or delivering high-powered blows).
On the negative side, I would say that its main flaw is that combat can get a bit repetitive after awhile and you have to force yourself to switch costumes regularly in order to find diversity instead of sticking with the awesome combination that the initial costumes can provide and mostly carry you throughout the game... there isn't much depth in the progression and levelling up of the characters but then again this game isn't meant to be a "true" RPG.
Even with the Winter/Christmas DLC, reaching 100% completion (finding every secret and costume) didn't take me more than 8h, but, at the low price it goes for, that aspect is hardly a fault. My only regret is that it took it this long to arrive at DRM-Free GOG.

It's a nice game, atmospheric and adsorbing, but pretty short. I completed the standard game in one sitting (albeit about a 6 hour sitting). I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for something more based around experiencing a charming little adventure rather than a complex or hardcore challenge. The RPG elements are incredibly light, and while it's not exactly incredibly easy, read more it's easy to autopilot it if you're into RPGs. It's more like a really cool, interactive cartoon made by Double Fine, and that's pretty good if you ask me.
