“Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Members of the public, you have ONE minute to reach minimum safe distance!”

Take the wheel as Max Damage as you plow scores of vehicles unlucky enough to be in your way. Your soundtrack will be the sound of crunching metal, the splatter of motor oil on the windshield, and the screams of skidding tires. With a white-knuckled grip on the wheel, you’ll have the choice of 23 crashmobiles (from a terrifying monster truck to a high octane Dragster) and 30+ levels of hellish fury and motorized terror.

Carmageddon was surrounded by huge controversy. A game about mowing down innocent race cars and getting points for it was not exactly something the world was prepared for back when it released. However, all this noise just made everyone talk about this title even more and it's evident that behind all this fuss there is actually an extremely fun game with very unique and crazy gameplay. Now you can experience it for yourself in its full, original, glory.

Even better in High Quality

This is one of the best games ever! This game is even better in high quality. Here is how it is done ;-) For the normal Carmageddon follow these steps: 1) Download and install nglide, I used this one http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide 2) In startmenu search the nglide entry and run the configuration and set the resolution to the one you prefer. 3) in the carmageddon installation dir in the folder doxbox delete (or rename) the file glide2x.dll This is important! If you dont delete this one, it wont use ndglide!!! and it will glitch! 4) Modify the shortcut on your desktop. You have to edit the target to dosboxCARMA3dfx.conf from dosboxCARMA.conf (see third attached file) 5) Start the game and enjoy the madness =) For Carmageddon Splatpack do this: 1) the same as for the normal version above. No need to do that twice! 2) the same as for the normal version above. No need to do that twice! 3) in the carmageddon installation dir in the folder doxbox delete (or rename) the file glide2x.dll This is important! If you don't delete this one, it wont use ndglide!!! and it will glitch! 4) Modify the shortcut on your desktop or starmenu for Splatpack. You have to edit the target to dosboxCARSPLAT3dfx.conf from dosboxCARSPLAT.conf 5) Start the game and enjoy the madness =)

My favorite racer

Racing games always have a few things in common: The best graphics, fast cars modeled after real life, and a track or road where, if you drive off it, you are penalized in some way. In Carmageddon, the graphics weren't the best, even at the time of release. Cars are modeled more toward concept cars meet demolition derby. You have a track, but there is no penalty for driving off. You could even win the race by just sitting at the starting line and waiting. How could that be? Well you'd wait and demolish all the other cars as they finished laps. If there are no more cars you're the winner! This is a racing game that rewards those who think outside the track. You can buy new cars, each with certain traits, as you race your way to the end. I have to say there is a certain satisfaction in mowing down endless pedestrians on your quest to destroy all cars. Yes you can race, like a normal game, and finish first. You don't have to destroy other cars or go homicidal on innocent bystanders, but why would you do that? This game is about good ol' fashion winning, and I'm not talking about your Grandpa. I mean push the other kids out the sandbox and kick over all their toys makes YOU the winner ol' fashion. So why the hell are you still reading this review? Carmageddon is starting. Get out there knock over some innocents and show everyone who's the king of racing.

Remember the movie?

The game that became Carmageddon started out as "3D Destruction Derby", a banger racing sim prototyped by Stainless Software. This was signed by SCi in 1995, but the banger-racing angle was soon dropped and for a while the game was to use the Mad Max license. This fell through, and was replaced by the Death Race 2000 license, as a sequel to the original film was at that time planned (it eventually emerged as a comic book).[2] This introduced the running-over of pedestrians into the game. When this license also fell through, SCi and Stainless took the decision to proceed with the game anyway, creating their own IP. The name "Carmageddon" was coined, and development proceeded with the designers allowed unusually free rein with regard to the content of the game. With that said this is pure insta-buy!

Childhood: First Blood

I first played this great stuff at my age of 12 and I was very amazed. Why? Because I had never seen a driving/car game before. I tried several old-school softwares concerned with racing, however, they were very boring to me. But Carmageddon meant revolution, at least for me. This was the first 3D racing game in which you shouldn't have had to go circuits and keep the rules of driving competitions. Furthermore, you could kill whoever you want - with your vehicle. Although I'm not a psychopath, I really enjoyed to crash innocent football players or streetwalkers. On the other hand, I understood the main goal of Carmageddon: you have to make as many car as possible get wrecked and win the 'race' by destroying everyone and don't let the wreck you totally. It was very revolting experience after Need for Speed where you could not even crash your car if you collapsed into anything. And the former driving 'simulators' or arcade racing stuffs were so linear. In spite of these earlier car games Carmagedden gave you huge freedom and lots of fun. However there have been several products which wanted to beat and copy Carmageddon (like Crashday) but I think it and its second sequel Carpocalpyse Now are still the king of 'freelancer' arcade car games. If you haven't tried it then, it is time now! And of course thanks to GOG that it has released Carma at last!
