Description
Alone in the Dark weaves a chilling tapestry of psychological horror and Southern Gothic charm, reimagining the iconic game that set the benchmark for the genre. We invite you to join us on a journey into madness, where each encounter could be your last. With each step you take closer to unravelling Derceto's mystery, the eyes that watch from the darkness grow hungrier. Every bullet means the difference between survival and an unthinkable end. The next door you unlock could lead to a nightmarish realm offering nothing but slashing claws, grasping tentacles, and frayed sanity. Journey to interbellum Louisiana, where an era of decadence hides a darker tale - of escape from past traumas and an intolerant society, into the waiting grasp of something darker, something that has patiently lurked for impossible eons. This is Alone in the Dark as you've never seen it - a skillfully-woven narrative of Southern Gothic elegance and eldritch madness that pays homage to its legendary origins while taking the next step forward in survival horror storytelling.

A Haunting Tale of Mystery and Madness
Step inside Derceto Manor, an asylum shrouded in intrigue, guarding a terrible secret. Client Emily Hartwood and private investigator Edward Carnby embark on a harrowing quest for answers; Emily to the mystery of her missing uncle, Edward to the toughest case he will ever face, and both to questions they dare not ask themselves. This re-envisioned classic invites you to explore an unforgettable single player adventure rich with suspense, frights, and revelations that will test the limits of your imagination.

Featuring Hollywood Talent
Experience some of the greatest acting survival horror has ever seen through the performances of award-winning actors Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy) and David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow) in their first videogame roles. Jodie and David’s immaculately captured likenesses breathe life into Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby, lending a deeply personal aspect to Alone in the Dark’s story that demands it be played twice to get the full experience.

A Tribute to Horror Pioneers
Rediscover the essence of psychological horror in a game that respectfully nods to its 1992 origin, the game that established the survival horror genre. Alone in the Dark is your gateway to an experience steeped in the atmospheric dread of classic horror, with next-generation storytelling and gameplay. A must-play for fans of twisted tales, nerve-wracking exploration, and desperate combat.

A Story That Challenges Reality
Envisioned by Mikael Hedberg, acclaimed writer behind modern horror classics “SOMA” and “Amnesia”, Alone in the Dark’s intricate web of mystery delves into themes of trauma, faith, evil, and abandonment. Whether you choose to brave the nightmare as Emily or Edward, you will uncover secrets that defy everything you thought about videogame storytelling.

  • Explore Derceto Manor in this reimagination of Alone in the Dark, a love letter to the 90’s cult classic horror game.
  • Return to the roots of psychological horror and experience an atmospheric journey worthy of the game that started the genre.
  • Dive into a world full of sounds that make your skin crawl with a haunting, yet mesmerizing doom jazz soundtrack.
  • Enjoy the thrill of desperate survival in a world where reality starts to crumble, evil lurks in every shadow and ammunition is scarce.
  • Experience this nightmare from either Emily Hartwood’s or Edward Carnby’s perspective and unearth the dark secrets of a gothic mansion.
  • Immerse yourself in a deep psychological story that goes beyond the realms of the imaginable, by Mikael Hedberg, cult horror writer of SOMA and Amnesia.
  • See Emily and Edward brought to live by the Hollywood talent of Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy) and David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow), who lend their voices, their appearance, and their formidable acting skills to the protagonists.

The long waited Lovecraftian game

I'll start with the bad stuff. It has some technical difficulties with some stuttering hear and there but not like other "famous" releases a few AI bugs and one, probably two audio bugs. At least that is what i encountered in my playthrough. Either wait for a patch or be patient because the journey is really good. For a first experience i started with standard difficulty and no hints and it was a memorable journey Now, the good stuff. I'm just going to say right from the start that, this is the most closest horror game, in my experience, that respects the Lovecraft vibe and mythos since Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth. Mister Mikael Hedberg who worked previously on SOMA and Amnesia the Dark Descend has done a terrific job setting a misterious, crazy, unsettling, rich universe using the good stuff from famous cult classic movies, and games such as The thing, Shutter Island, Silent Hill, RE. The exploring part is rewarding, with a lot of trinkets and background story in form of pages with the posibility of listening to them with some good voice acting. Puzzles are fair and not too hard to figure out. Once you get inside Derceto and start exploring it and meet its inhabitants it will feel like something taken from an American Horror Story episode. There are a few jump scares but they don't overuse them. The soundtrackand sound design is just amazing, it blends perfectly with the noir vibe, fighting and tense moments. I took my time slowly exploring the mansion just the absorb the unsettling air that weighed heavy on detective Carnby. The characters are done well and there are some funny moments to lighten up the mood. Combat system Well, here it depends on your preferences. I failed a couple of times and i admit it is a bit cluncky but i think it is ment to feel like that. After a few encoutners and analyzing how the level design was thought, i had no issues and i faced the challenges with a decent amount of difficult.

"Alone in the dark" comes back in style

Big fan of the original trilogy and I can happily say that the 2024 version is worth it. It may have some flaws here and there but it is AMAZING. The game FEELS like it should. While the 3rd person movement is not near as clunky as the original Alone in the Dark, there is a small level of jank that makes absolute sense. The story is awesome. All the areas from the game are well-detailed. The Voice acting with the notes and characters are well done. David Harbour and Jodie Comer did a fantastic job. The same goes for the other actors as well. While it is huge and different from the original, it stands on its own as what Alone in the Dark should be. The story driven atmosphere is even more so amazing now as it was years ago. As someone who likes to explore and get more of the side lore. I was very pleased and impressed. I found myself putting down the controller and letting the notes be read to me in cinematic flare. It's not Alone in the Dark A New Nightmare or the crap movie that was made as a cash grab / tax break. The Music - BREATHTAKING. I could gush on that opening menu theme forever. The game's sound is top notch

More to games than combat and graphics

Before buying this game I was a fan of the Alone in the Dark games having played three of the games and generally enjoying them so I was said to see this game getting mauled by reviewers saying things like ugly graphics, janky combat, confusing plot and that the boss fights were very lacking. Even with this in mind I decided to get the game and give it a shot becasue with AA games you usually get a gem despite the jank and I am happy to say that I was not wrong in this case. The story is very interesting and left me playing deep into the night wanting to uncover the mysteries of Derceto and what was going on. The game has side items that can be found hidden around the areas and those items when found in threes give you more information to go off of and help you figure out the mystery; those who like to rush through games will miss out on a lot of information and will probably end the game very confused as to what was going on. The original Alone in the Dark payed homage to the Call of Cthulhu mythos and it was great to see not only was it done in this game but moreso. I will not go into spoilers but if you are a fan of the Cthulhu mythos you will greatly enjoy this much like Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. I would also like to add that this games sound design for music and the atmospheric effects are so good so if you like to immerse yourself into games say playing deep into the night in silence then you are in for a ride. So if you enjoy deep mysteries, the Cthulhu mythos, survival horror or just creepy games give this game a try if not at full price then maybe on discount.

I like it, but...

I think this is a good game overall. The atmosphere is right, the story is pretty decent, it feels good to control. There are some issues though. - the performance issues. the game hitches and stutters regardless of settings, usually on area loads. This really brings you out of the moment, especially in cutscenes. - the lack of even a weak punch when you don't have a (consumable) melee weapon on-hand. - health/ammo pickups can be finnicky. if you get too close to them, you're likely to be unable to pick it up because the prompt will disappear. so you'll end up wiggling back and forth trying to get it to show up again. - the two boss fights in the game just kind of suck. they're high damage and since your dodge doesn't hae any iframes on it, you're far too likely to get bopped. especially in the second one, where the boss eventually spawns a ton of adds, then also resumes attacking you while taking up most of the arena. Really, overall it feels like the combat in this game was poorly thought out, or even just an afterthought

Surprisingly good revival of the series.

I had no high expectations and maybe because of this I had such a good experience. The devs where clearly taking inspiration from the Resident Evil Remakes, mostly Resident Evil 2 as the new Alone in The Dark main gameplay loop is exploration and puzzle solving with some combat in between. The 1920 setting is a delight to experience. Fans of the original will recognize remade elements from the first game. There is a few technical issues but nothing game braking or annoying to the point of not wanting to play. Also if you are planning to play, it is best to not approach the game as a shooter as you might find the combat a bit lacking. It's not bad but the playable characters are not trained soldiers, so the combat is much slower and methodic and not action packed adrenalin.
