The Ultimate, Gruesome Adventure

This game, along with Grand Inquisitor, instilled within me a deep, burning passion for the adventure game genre. While I prefer Grand Inquisitor for its humor and greater levels of polish, I am in love with this game's perfect, twisting story. The puzzles are brilliant, the acting is surprisingly great, and the dark atmosphere is unparalleled. It also gets you emotionally invested in the story; you will find sympathy and anger in surprising places. A bit of a warning for the younger folk here; this game is brutal. There are stabbings, decapitations, and gruesome imagery all around. I was freaked out by all of it when I was seven or eight. If you're second-guessing yourself, look up the intro video on YouTube; the cinematic will show just what you're in for. This is a must-play title. If I taught a course relating to games, this would be on my Required Reading list. To this day, there is nothing quite like it.

How to slow down the game

The game scrolls too fast on modern computers with fast CPU's. By editing the DOSBox settings the game can be slowed down. Edit the file: dosboxZorkNemesis.conf Scroll down to: core=auto cputype=auto cycles=Max cycleup=1000 cycledown=1000 I changed this to: core=auto cputype=386 cycles=90000 cycleup=1000 cycledown=1000 Changing CPUType to 386 probably did not help much. Chaning the Cycles from MAX to 90,000 did the most good in slowing down the scrolling. Depending on how fast your computer is you may need to increase or decrease the cycles to higher or slower than 90000. Try this and see if it helps you to run the game.

The best Zork game of them all!

Zork Nemesis has continuously been one of those games that I pull out when I'm nostalgic (usually once every year). It has surprisingly aged very well. I think I first played it when I was a little girl (maybe 13?) and it left such a wonderful impression on me due to the complex characters, the beautiful worlds to visit, the logically stimulating puzzles, and the complete feeling of solitude in an alien place. It whisks you up and takes you away emotionally and I enjoy it more every single time I play it. I would easily call it a bright star in the line-up of PC adventure games. I am now 25 years old and I expect to pull it out every year for many more decades to come.

Still ear candy ,)

This is the DOS version of Zork Nemesis, with a custom Gog.com all-in-one installer and the DOSBox emulator package included and pre-configured. This version of the game has no sound- or speed-related issues on modern machines. I ran it on my XP SP3 machine without problems. The one thing I tweaked was to change the default sound output from 22050 to 44100 Hz (manually replace the default settings in "dosboxZorkNemesis.conf"). For full 3D pseudo-surround, QSound needs to be enabled in the game via CTRL + P (preferences), by default it's off. (The chosen Windows MIDI output device should be "MPU 401" for optimal MIDI sound, but that may depend on the case.) I had never played the DOS version before, but with the above settings there's no difference to the Windows original, except menus have to be accessed via keyboard shortcuts in place of dropdown menus.

You just have to play it.

The ultimate in immersion gaming. The surround sound and story do an almost perfect job of making the hair on the back of your neck stand up. This is truly a classic master piece with many twists. If you are not into this type of game, you need to at least play through it for the story. You will not be disappointed.
