hard to REALLY love, but it's good
Pros: Game has great mood and characters. The world is enticing and there's a sense of mystery and depth. The music is very good, and while you won't hum any of the tunes in the shower, it fits the world perfectly. The game is a bit of a LttP-style top down action adventure, with 4 characters whose skills you level up gradually during the game which allows you to explore new areas of the map. At various times in the story you may have access to 1 or several of the characters that you can swap between. The world map is huge with lots of distinct environments, but most of the time you'll be directed to make your way to one goal at a time, so it's not non-linear in that respect. The real meat of the game is the puzzle solving required for working out how each character can traverse the environment according to their current unlocks. How the maps are laid out to allow different paths for each character is really interesting and often overlap in cool ways. Cons: Unfortunately the main thing that is going to bug people is that World to the West is pretty boring to look at. The art direction goes for clean lines and blocks of colour, which is fine, but when you pair it with the top down view that you play from 99% of the time... you're stuck with looking at large, low detail acres of empty space. Take for example the screenshots in the above gallery - YOU WILL NEVER SEE THE ENVIRONMENTS from the angles that most of these screenshots are taken from. A lot of the time the camera is cropped in close looking almost straight down and you're just presented with very empty looking spaces to run around in. Compare this to how a game like Oceanhorn looks... Additionally, the game is pretty repetitive early on. Only after 3 or 4 hours do things start to really take off, in terms of story, mechanics, and combat. And even then I felt there's not much in the way of character development to drive you on. But... there's plenty of charm! Thumbs up.
