Description
Wizard's Crown is a fantasy role-playing game in which the player creates a party of up to eight adventurers and takes them on a quest to retrieve a magical crown from a wizard named Tarmon, who sealed himself and the crown in his laboratory five hundred years ago.

The game features tactical battles, during which the player navigates the party members in turns over the battlefield. Different weapons demonstrate unique characteristics; for example, spears can attack two squares away, flails ignore the enemy's shields, and axes have a chance of breaking them completely. Shields are used to defend against frontal attacks and those coming from whatever side the shield is equipped on. The player can opt to skip these details and have the battle proceed automatically.

Experience gained by characters is spent on skills, attributes and life points. Unlike in most comparable games, classes and their unique abilities are not assigned to the characters, but must instead be "bought" by using intelligence points. The classes are Thief, Ranger, Fighter, Priest and Sorcerer; any of those can be combined with another one for a single character.

Weapons can be imbued with various enhancements. Magical weapons inflict elemental damage (called "injuries" in the game); "Plus" weapons cause extra bleeding, which may affect the character's health, making him faint; "Life Blast" weapons can kill a character in such a way that he cannot be resurrected afterwards.

Great game, poor graphics version

This is a great game that I enjoyed playing back in the 80's. It has deep (for the time) RPG mechanics and good replay value and presents a decent challenge. However, I am deeply disappointed that the version chosen to be here is the horribly ugly 4-color CGA version. which is the worst of all the 5 versions. Even the Apple II version looks better than this one, but the Atari St version is actually pretty great. If you just want to play it and you don't care how it looks, this version has the same mechanics, but IMHO, it's a far inferior experience because of the CGA palette.

Nostalgia In Spades

Yeah - this was the game I sunk literally HUNDREDS of hours into during my junior year in high school. I think I may have even skipped a few days of schools when I got to the endgame portion just to finish it. There were "better" games out there even at the time - but for some reason this one and it's sequel ETERNAL DAGGER just caught my imagination. I even wrote a series of short stories about my character's adventures in the ruins of the city looking for grinding meat and treasure and ultimately Tarmon's magical crown. For it's time it was pretty deep with lots of hardcore role-playing options - the kind of high fantasy CRPG game that while not genre revolutionary - hit all the right spots I wanted. I remember keeping thick notebooks full of notes, maps and stats while I played. It's a must play for the nostalgic looking for a classic experience and the new scholar exploring what gaming was like in the latter half of the 1980's.

Classic RPG with deep mechanics

Wizard's Crown is another one of SSI's 80s masterpieces. I LOVED the SSI brand as a kid in the 90s. I played these with my Mom and fell in love with roleplaying games for life! The story is great, the party system is fun and a must have. Reminds me of early Elder Scolls.

One of my favorite tactical RPGs

This was one of my favorite games back in the mid-1980s. It was obviously made by people who obsess over wargame mechanics, which is unsurprising coming from SSI. The combat is so detailed, though, that it's still among the most intricate tactical role-playing games. This combat formed the basis for SSI's later Gold Box games, but it was simplified to fit the AD&D rules. If you loved the Gold Box games, but you wished the combat was crazy detailed, you're going to be in heaven when playing Wizard's Crown. Highly recommended for fans of Ultima III and Pool of Radiance.
