WHAT'S INSIDE THIS RELEASE

You're getting two builds: patched (Enhanced) and retail (Original) for those of you who prefer an unaltered experience as a bonus. Both builds are running on DOSBox with a custom configuration tool. The Enhanced build features fixes introduced in EGwhaven, a must-have community project, which addresses an array of bugs and issues with the game (we'd like to thank ETTiNGRiNDER for the contribution to this release). Additionally, the controls are re-mapped to what you'd expect to see as a default in a first-person game nowadays.

You can access the Original Build through Additional Executables section in GOG GALAXY or find it in the game folder.

Bad game that's fun

Review done after finishing the game on normal. TL;DR While I enjoyed it a lot make no mistake - this is a BAD game. So why the f did I give it 3*? Well, a bad game can still be unironically enjoyed and you can’t stop me. Not so TL;DR Witchaven is an action dungeon crawler focused on melee combat. This is NOT an RPG. This game has an unresponsive melee system that’s bad. When you click attack, your weapon will begin swinging in one of 2 motions. These animations will have different length and will connect on different frames. Since you will have to approach enemies while swinging in order to get close at the precise moment of strike, random animations mean can’t really do that reliably and enemies will hit you back most of the time. All melee weapons can break and you have to replace them, but you also cannot carry more that 1 of each weapon, so you have to break them in order to replace them. However, the act of killing enemies is satisfying as fk. They scream, spew blood and guts. Sprites, while basic, respond nicely to being killed. There are ranged weapons and spells but they are weak and ammo is limited. All spells are one-use and there are also flying and ‘open door’ spells for when you want to maybe skip something. You also have potions for healing, temp. increasing damage, curing poison, fire immunity and invisibility. There are 25 levels and during my gameplay I’ve encountered 2 bugs that could be skipped using your spells. Most levels are also pretty fun to go through, with moving elements and interesting layouts. Some trap-heavy levels can go to hell though. It will take you up around 8 hours to finish the game. Finally, the port. Since this is DosBox – you will sometimes have performance issues common to the era. Looking up/down feels unresponsive and menus are TOO responsive and you can accidentally pick load or new game instead of save. Save often. Lowdown It’s a bad game. I liked it. You probably shouldn’t play it. Or maybe you should.

The game that me hooked on PC gaming

Back in 1996, I bought my first PC, a pentium 166, with 2mb of video graphics, and 16 mb of RAM, and Windows 95. I decided to buy Witchhaven to try out on my new PC. I had a blast with it. Twenty five years later I still cannot get enough of PC gaming. With no hesitation, I bought the Witchhaven bundle on GOG. Brings back old memories as soon as I started the game and watched the opening intro scene. Here's to Witchhaven, the game that started it all for me with PC gaming. So glad it is finally on GOG!

I never expected to see this game again

I bought this at release back in the mid 90s. It reminded me a lot of Heretic with the fantasy theme and combat. It had some RPG elements such as XP and leveling. There was a wide selection of medieval type weapons, though all would degrade over time and needed to be replaced. I didn't know that there was a sequel so I will be picking both up today.

Fills my Sword and Sorcery Needs

We get alot of Stuff these Days in Fantasy Games. But what seems almost forgotten in Games is the Old Sword and Sorcery Genre. Especially the Style like the Coverart for these Games present. It doesnt hold up completely once you start the Game, but i have a total blast with it. You can see that it isnt the Best Game, but also not the Worst. Its like one of these Pre Conan Movies like Ator you watch from Time to Time, have some Fun and remember it well for what it is. To me its also great that you dont play a Magician. In these Games i want a Warrior with an Horned Helmet slashing with Axes and Swords through his Enemies. Sure, here you have Spells but you dont need to use them often. Elderborn is the most current thing that comes close to what i search in these Kind of Games. But even this has Designs that i dont like. Yes,theres also Graven, but in Graven you play as a Magician. So nothing for me. But back to Witchaven. Personally,i love the exploring, and also the Fighting. its basic and clunky but you get used to it. Expect not much and the Game maybe surprises you. I never played Witchaven 1 and 2 before, and its great that i can play them now.

A good bad game

Witchaven is the best game from a schlock developer Capstone. It's still a bad game with bizzare design decisions and poor execution. Despite this, the game is a highly enjoyable experience if you know what you're getting into and what to expect. The best aspect are level design and presentation coherency, creating a really distinct feel. 25 maps are a convoluted set pieces in a fantasy realm, filled by an army of goblins, snake people, undead, devils and monsters that can't be described. This is accompanied by a low quality music and bottom tier SFXes that drill your ears constantly. You're not forced to explore maps entirely. If you know what you're doing, or you're lucky, you can finish even the biggest maps in a matter of seconds. You only need a pentagram and use it on a portal. You can bypass most key hunting and platforming thanks to spells like Open Doors or Fly. But you might want to explore the levels for potions, weapons, armor and experience. Unfortunately, it can be a dire activity thanks to poorly communicated traps, doors and dead end alleys that might force you to load the game. Depth perception is bad and platforming is extremely annoying. Restarting the map from death is a no-go, because it also resets your experience which gates the most useful spells, locking your progress. Offensive spells are useless: you must select them, pull your hands out and only then you can cast them. Melee is janky, but satisfying after you get to the guessing game of the attacks' range and random nature of moves you perform. The durability is random and not communicated. Some weapons are useless (Pikes, Axe, Dagger, Morning Star), while others are easy mode. An awful hit detection not matching animations can put you off many times (just walk pass the spiders, they're not woth it). Potions are extremely useful and can turn a hopeless encounter (Devils in lava pools, Dragons) into an extremely satisfying cheese. If you love Build games, I'd say it's a must play game.
