Overview:

WindForge is a side-scrolling block-building game where you explore hostile skies in an ever-changing Steampunk world. Everything you see can be created or destroyed, creating an RPG without barriers that rewards creative problem solving and improvisation. Take off in fully customizable airships, and embark on a journey of discovery and survival that will take you to the heart of the world and beyond. This project has been funded to date by the studio itself, coupled with financial support from the Ontario Media Development Corporation’s Digital Media Fund and a successful Kickstarter campaign.

The modern way of life on Cordeus is reliant on refined Sky Whale oil. Everything from the machines used daily, to the food that is eaten, is ultimately dependent on the oil. The citizens of Cordeus are so hungry for oil that the once abundant population of Sky Whales is dwindling. At current rate, the noble species will face certain extinction in a few short years. To avoid falling back into the dark ages, civilization must find a new source of energy. It is said that an ancient people named the Aetherkin had exotic sources of energy. Energy more powerful than anything any human has ever seen. Unfortunately, research related to the Aetherkin is strictly forbidden by law. In an attempt to save humanity’s way of life, YOU have been secretly hired to uncover this ancient energy source.

Minimum system requirements: Windows 7 / 8, Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics memory and Open GL 3 compatible GPU, 2 GB available HD space. Patched to version 1.1.8742

There are so many bugs in this game that I won't even try to put them all in this review. Let's just say that nothing really works, from random glitch launches and instadeaths, to the save system not working. In the games current state you can't save because it will crash your game and if you load a save it will become corrupted after it crashes your game. That's if the game doesn'tread more crash before you want to save, or if the game doesn't decide to kill you for jumping into a ceiling. The AI in the game is awful and enemies just run back and forth, their sprites flipping back and forth so fast you don't know which way they are facing. This game does not play like Contra. The weapon mechanics are silly. The crafting and mine system isn't functioning properly at the moment.
I'll stop there, but I could go on. Avoid this game until it is patched.

Trying to give it a fair shot

03/12/14 initial release review.
What this game needs: Massive Patching.
What it needed: More testing.
My rating: A 1 and a 5, but mostly a 1.
Why: While I can save just fine, and flying around via grapple hook or ship is fun; everything else largely isn't. The difficulty curb doesn't really exist. You can die doing pretty much anything from walking to pausing to lightly bumpingread more your ship into a wall which sends it careening three maps over into a cliff wherein it explodes in such a fashion that Michael Bay would be mildly disappointed... The NPC's are useless and barely interactive at best, the AI is retarded, the graphics are glitchy, there is little to no properly done compression making it a laggier experience than a full 3D game, mining for resources is a long and grueling process at points that will make the game feel tedious, building a ship takes forever and feels sloppy...
It's a game with GREAT potential and poor execution. It's better described as a generic side scroller with some Worms 2, Terraria/Don't Starve/Minecraft, early Ultima, and so on... In otherwords, it's not Contra, it's an overly complicated mess that needed to be smoothed out and refined a lot more to properly mesh.

Concept? Check. Design? Check. Polish? No.

While Windforge is quite enjoyable, with well thought out mechanics (building flying ships!) and novel ideas (a storyline in a open-ended game), it unfortunately lacks the polish needed to really make it shine.
First off, there is the lack of video settings. Despite making use of complicated texture layouts and instancing, there are virtually no settings that allow one to controlread more things like antialiasing and anistropic filtering.
Second, the characters in the game lack a basic level of expected variety. The player's character, regular NPCs, and even special NPCs all look as if they were generated from the same exact set of choices.
Third, the story, although existent, could use quite a bit of work. The player is pretty much given a burst of backstory, and then dropped into a large situation mid-story. The rest of the story seems.. vapid, like it was thought up at the last moment.
Don't get me wrong - if you like designing ships, exploring, and going on random quests, this game is fine, however it lacks the polish needed to wipe away the little annoyances one finds in virtually every game.
