More of the same, but with worst balance:
The game seem balanced for the end game, and going the way up may be boring when you yet don't have grind the facilities and skills.
That's still a good game, but loosing was pleasnt in first one, while here it is not.
(The bug reported in the review from July the 8th is now finally fixed in the GoG version and the game is playable again.)
It is a pleasant rougelite game. You have 3 different warriors under your command in tactical battles on a 9x9 grid. Each battle lasts about 2 minutes, and a whole complete run takes between 1 and 2 hours. There are different upgrade options in between, and each run usually brings about new unlocks, encouraging you to try again with different party and different approach. There are challenges, achievements, and hard modes to keep you occupied even when you know the game well.
I find the graphics charming and the mechanics interesting. Other games in this genre I've found on GoG are Warriors of the Nile 1 and Defend the Rook.
To me the ideal sort of roguelike is one that doesn't require a great deal of investment to complete a particular session, but rewards lots of investment in the game overall. Warriors of the Nile 2 is a perfect example of that. You can probably finish a game in about 30 minutes, unless it's a really great run then you're talking 2 hours, but you'll play again and again and gain more and more options (and a little power, but really the game is about expanding options with each run). Given the turn-base nature, it feels like you're rewarded for excellent strategy and defeat feels fair and understandable. It's also a good price point.
Cute character design, fine graphics, excellent gameplay, affordable. I suppose I could knock it for a lack of deep story or lore, but this is really a fantastic game. It's a solid addition to your library.
So the gameplay mechanics, visuals, etc are great. But I ran into a problem while playing: after each played level, you get stuck in the battle with no way of leaving it (the only solution I've found is to repeatedly close the game and open it to progress); from looking at the steam discussions, it seems to be a bug introduced in the latest patch.
Note that only the latest patch is available on GOG. Consider buying it if they update it (note that this issue was documented Jan 28, 2024, and it's been over 5 months now). Until then, you'll be opening and closing the game many many times before seeing the credits roll. Asked for a refund, but I strongly feel I would be giving it a good review if it worked.
Pretty much everything I've said for the first applies to the sequel. Both pro and cons.
The main difference is that there's a lot more things now.
More unlockables/progression, generally longer runs, more variation, etc.
I'd suggest you first try the first one if you haven't played either - its cheaper and easier to pickup. And afterwards, if your main complaint was the lack of things, or you just want more of it - go ahead with the sequel.
Some smaller changes -
Extra Gear slots are behind a building rather than from random upgrades. Get this first. Most of the unlocks are small bonuses but this is almost required.
Many bosses/mid-bosses constantly summon units. Being too slow or defensive can easily get you swarmed or trapped. Being too glass cannon is also risky as summons can appear and attack the same turn.
I've had some devices STILL experience the bug where you can't progress or end turn even after the patch.
It's tougher than the first in the beginning and at the end but still easy for roguelikes. It does NOT need to be maxed out to win (I won on my 2nd or 3rd run). Might still feel grindy to go through all the ranks though.
