Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars

In many ways this is a smaller and far less ambitious game than most other games in the Ultima franchise, but at the same time I think it benefits from a narrower focus.
Back when this game first came out, it represented a large proportion of my disposable income to get a new release big box game. Having been a bit let down by Ultima VI, and not really ever gotten into Savage Empireread more all that much, it was a bit of a risk. I was however, not disappointed at all.
The writing is what sold me on Martian Dreams, and I remember it fondly over 20 years later. Exploration feels a little bit all or nothing, with much of the landscape of Mars being a desolate wasteland. Those few outposts of humanity and other notable destinations however feel all the more rewarding for having discovered them hidden in the harsh and barren environment.
There's no doubt that Ultima games are showing their age these days. The U6 interface is pretty clunky by modern standards, but if you can get past that, there's a great game hidden underneath.

An enchanting slice of alternate history

If you're into HG Wells, science fiction, steampunk, history, or simply love imaginitive, well told stories then you'll find a lot to like in this curiosity from the Ultima series.
The 'Ultima: World of Adventures' series was short lived, but gave Origin and Lord British a chance to escape the confines of the D&D style fantasy world they'd successfully portrayed with the Ultimaread more franchise, and branch out to explore new worlds.
I used to own this on 5 1/4" floppies and spent hours playing, engrossed in the alternate universe populated by some of history's most famous and interesting characters. The mix of history and fiction really pulls you in, and the desire to explore Mars and discover all the historical characters will keep you playing.
Overall this would serve as a good introduction to the Ultima series, and it really is a great freebie from GOG!
