Underrated
The entire time the game was out I heard very little, or negative comments about it. When I saw it on sale I picked it up on a whim expecting an afternoon of fun and to forget about it soon afterwards. Yet here I am, 40 hours in and still enjoying it immensely. The game sure is rough around the edges but it still shows that the devs behind it really cared about their product and despite low budget managed to deliver a satisfying experience. The inspiration from Dark Souls series shows at every corner, but it doesn't stop the game from having its own unique personality, the combat is more fluid and doesn't lock you into a place for as long as each swing does in DS and the exploration feels a bit more organic, because instead of finding magical teleport fires, you simply unlock shortcuts. The unique limb lock on/ dismemberment system adds to the depth of combat and helps it stand out from other similar games. Most weapons feel impactful and satisfying to use, unfortunately the best weapon in the game is locked to NG+ mode and easily missable if you don't know about it before hand. The graphics are fantastic in my opinion, the artstyle is unique and the whole "Industrial equipment gone rogue" look fit right in with my tastes. The only aspect that bothered me was how many story lines in the game seemingly out of nowhere are cut off, just to come back later on with no warning. It really shows the time/money constraints the developers of The Surge put up with. Makes it seem almost as if they wanted to include a lot more in the game, but were simply unable to. Great game, buy it. Can't wait for Surge 2.
