The Inquisitor is a story-driven, dark fantasy adventure game with action elements, that compels you to face difficult moral choices. The game is set in an alternative version of (religious) reality. Inspired by bestselling Inquisitor book series by Jacek Piekara. Once nailed to the cross and near death, Jesus becomes consumed by utter rage. He breaks free and unleashes violent vengeance on all the non-believers. Centuries pass and now an army of zealot Inquisitors brutally enforce the faith in this blood-soaked Church.
You are Mordimer Madderdin, an Inquisitor in God's service, sent to the town of Koenigstein which is plagued by a series of mysteries and sin. Solve the various cases and crimes of those who have transgressed against the faith, all while uncovering the truth of a darker evil from another realm that is trying to enter the world of the living.
Be the ultimate Holy Judge and Jury: Your role as an Inquisitor is to maintain order and enforce the faith in God. But the world is full of sinners who have lost their way. Decide the fates of those you judge in multiple story-driven cases and missions. This is a world where morality and what is right have long strayed from each other. So, will you show mercy or undying belief in The Holy Law?
A morally tainted, non-linear tale: This is a dark and gritty story centered around a religion preaching revenge and violence. Multiple branching story choices will test your morality. Choose your path and decide what kind of Inquisitor you will be - one of pity or one of retribution - and ultimately what mark you will leave on this world.
Enlightened sleuthing: Mordimer has unique skills and abilities that allow him to solve the various crimes and mysteries that have befallen Koenigstein. Track down and interrogate suspects. Discover the hidden truths of the city and its inhabitants. Piece together the evidence and make your final judgments.
Delve into the Unworld: Unbeknownst to those around him, Mordimer has the ability to enter the mysterious Unworld. There he can discover the deeper secrets that suspects have tried to hide in their souls. But there is a grave risk when venturing into this world and the dark force which reigns supreme here will do everything it can to destroy you for stepping foot into its realm.
Persuasive interrogations: The 1500’s remain a cruel era of justice. As an Inquisitor, you have free rein to use whatever methods and tools deemed necessary to persuade suspects to reveal ‘the truth’. These optional interrogations date back to the times of the real Inquisition and it’s up to you to decide if and how much force to apply to those under your investigation.
Let your sword do the talking: Sometimes a tongue just needs to be cut right out in order to loosen it. A full sword-based combat system means various cases will let or even require you to use brute force. Master your blade, find your openings, and use your enemy’s weak points against them.
I'm torn. Part of me wants to give this game 5/5 and call it the best game of 2007. Part ot me is aware that this drivel came out in 1Q2024. Both of those stances also know that this game is nowhere near worth nor just your 40 dollars, but also time spending playing this antiquated mess. It feels like someone tried to re-make Gothic 2, run out of money halfway the production and then decided to use instead Polish shitty dark fantasy novels to cover the blanks and use "fandom" (of about thousand people) to save its sales.
What a monumental trainwreck it is!
I am sorry, I really like the idea of the game. Plot and twists made me play this game till the end... well till one end. I made "wrong" choices so I did not get the "best" ending. I watched the alternative endings afterwards on youtube... I had not the motivation to play it again. Why?
It feels like a trash movie with episodes of me playing the main character between dialog scenes (in a so damn lineary way that I don't get, why there is a journal function - just pray and see the next goal). Although there are some decisions I can make. They often feel the same - especially with the unemotional faces of NPC and the main character. Not to mention the voices that are immersion breaking. A superficially good looking world does not stand a second look. So many glitches, bugs and even three complete game crashes in one playthrough. Watch the game trailer carefully and even there you can see glitchy animations.
It feels like a game the team patched together to convince a publisher financing it. And I would say yes, do your job and in a year there could have been a really great game after polishing it. But it is the final version, that feels like most parts of the game never left early early alpha phase.
I wish I could play this game for the first time with one year of additional development. I wish I could give more stars, because I say it one last time some parts are really cool, like the idea and setting. Please, please make a second part or a remaster in 15 years and eliminate the flaws of this game.
Guys and gals skip this game.
Für deutsche Mitmenschen fasst es das Review von PC Games bei Youtube gut zusammen. "Jesus Christus, ist das öde" schaut das gern. In Kürze: Spannende Grundidee, unangenehme Umsetzung in vielen Teilen.
GREAT GAME, good story, good plot, for all the real gamers :)
