Stupid music puzzle

As I was going through this, I was planning on giving four stars. Atmosphere is nice, wandering around trying to figure out what was going on was interesting. Up until I hit one puzzle, this was a borderline walking simulator. The only thing that made the puzzles difficult is that it was sometimes hard to see a required item. This all changed with one (many, many expletives not entered) music puzzle. You are required to press buttons matching a sequence of music playing. Too many mistakes, and it resets to a new, random sequence. If you have a tin ear or are deaf, this puzzle is impossible. Without the puzzle reset, I probably would've been able to get it eventually, but there's no way I'd be able to get it in the requisite three tries. Into the garbage bin it goes. Not even worth the 90% off I got it for.

Escape the room

The game started off as a creepy experience, where a malfunctioning radio, hallucinations and faulty lighting guide you through your first steps in an old-fashioned hotel room. You are trapped and need to escape. I'm quite the fan of escape-the-room-games, so this one was right up my alley. As with most games in this genre, it's pretty short. During your short stay, you'll be solving puzzles, using and combining (to a lesser extent) inventory items and traversing a pretty maze. The puzzles aren't overly hard nor are they abundant, but quite satisfying in general. The most difficult part is sometimes to figure out the sequence in which to solve them most efficiently. The main strong point of this game was the plot progression, as the room gets less scary but more mysterious. Playing this with headphones is a must, as the ambient music sets the tone perfectly. For those looking for something similar as The 7th Guest: it combines "puzzles", "exploration" and "creepy" much in the same way, but "The Guest" is much shorter and the puzzles are more innovative (yet easier) than its old-school almost namesake. And there's no B-actors involved, though the (limited) voice acting in this game is charming to say the least. I would recommend giving this game a go, but waiting for a discount might be in order given the shortness of it and the lack of replayability.

Escape

Escape a hotel room. Endure the voice acting. Honestly, the game is pretty terrible. Movement feels weird despite the fps being above 60. Visuals do some weird stuff that just feels uncomfortable. You can pick up a LOT of items and most of them will just be trash, cluttering your inventory. New items get added at the back instead of the front. Sound is weird, music from a device being way more quiet with your back turned to it. This seems to be determined by proximity; You can hear stuff perfectly through the wall at at least one point due to it being close to the object making the sound. The very low rating is mostly due to one specific puzzle requiring pressing notes in the order a music box plays. You have three tries until this resets. This puzzle is evil. The twist at the end was alright, not worth the two hours getting there though. Recommended for masochists.

Trippy Mystery Gloom

The game is categorized as an mystery adventure puzzle, and while i'm somewhat missing the adventure part it truly delivers on the puzzle and mystery part. Without going into spoilers, i think i rarely met a game that really held up the atmosphere over the complete time i played it, but this one did. The atmosphere is gloomy, dark, trippy, made up by a very fitting soundtrack and higly professional graphics. Puzzle quality was good, with only a few real tough ones, resulting in (for me) a playtime of roughly 4 hours. I encountered no bugs or exceptions, on my 4 year old rig no technical problems at all. I would highly suggest playing this at night with headphones. The reasons this is not a 5-star review is the (for me) somewhat abrupt ending, which left me kind of wondering. But, this could just be me. Final conclusion : buy it.

Claustrophobic puzzler, story average

Puzzles are okay. Some easy, a hard one, most of them average. I've seen better and worse. They did a pretty good job on a claustrophobic atmosphere throughout the game, but apart from that, there is not much more to expect. I blame it on the rather early twist in the story. Also, nice idea for the story, but not an overwhelmingly deep one.
