Set in a grim land plagued by war, Tails of Iron is a hand-drawn RPG Adventure with punishingly brutal combat. As Redgi, heir to the Rat Throne, you must restore your broken Kingdom by banishing the merciless Frog Clan and their ferocious leader, Greenwart.
As you explore the deceivingly charming world, you’ll encounter a cast of unique companions, ready to aid you in your adventure. And you’ll need all the help you can get, whether that’s new meal recipes, blueprints to forge deadly weapons and armour, or even a land-chugging, armour-plated mole mobile!
Overcome your fears. Rescue your brothers. Restore Your Kingdom.
Your tail has begun…
Explore a Treacherous Kingdom
Fully accompanied by the deep, raspy narrations of the legendary Doug Cockle (celebrated within the world of RPGs), prepare to embark on an epic adventure across the mediaeval-fantasy Rat Kingdom. Complete side quests and faction hunts for some additional gold-on-the-side, or join forces with a sharp-eyed companion to help even the playing field.
Master Brutal Combat
From frog zombies to gargantuan grubs - and everything in-between - the Kingdom is awash with danger. To overcome each perilous encounter, you’ll need to study your opponent’s attacks and react accordingly! Thankfully, there’s a range of deadly abilities at your disposal, including parry bashes and fatal executions, not to mention ranged attacks with your nifty bow and arrow.
Customise your Attack
Adapt Redgi’s combat style to the task at hand. Heavy armour may provide better protection but can you really afford to slow down your dodge-roll? And then there’s the question of weapon; axes pack a punch, while spears are quick and nimble. Perhaps you’d prefer the all-round performance of a trusty broadsword?
Overcome Savage Boss Fights
While danger lurks around every toadstool, you’ll need to keep your wits sharp and your blade sharper when it comes to the devastating boss fights. Cold-blooded in every sense of the word, these oversized amphibians each present their own unique combat challenge, and you’ll need more than a good set of armour to come out on top.
Brew Recipes, Craft Weapons, Forge Armour
Redgi’s keep is also home to his brothers, Rem-Rem, Bam-Bam and Dug. Rem can cook up a health-boosting feast with ingredients found throughout the world, while Bam can craft new weapons and armors from special blueprints you’ll uncover… if you look hard enough. And then there’s Dug, who’ll update you about new quests available throughout the Kingdom.

I don't usually play this type of games, but I found this one enjoyable, the art and story feels pretty nice and wanting to know more, kudos to the narrator also.
The game seems a bit difficult, but it's mostly about timing and learning the enemy moves, with that, you can win most facts. However,it's not always the case, when facing multiple enemies or when your character is not in a correct possition between the screen and the enemy(animation issues), there are some attacks that become impossible to avoid and could be frustrating. Also, some bosses del ton of damage even if you got the best armour against them, so little mistakes are painful.
Still, prety good to play and satisfactory to overcome.
Some people complain about getting late, I get what they mean, but better late than never. It also does not help GoG to improve, many companies don't trust DRM free, or don't seem much profit publishing games in several platforms, so so it some love to fix that, don't be part of the problem.
The combat is brutal and timing based as supposed to combo based hence the dark souls compassion. There's parry, dodge role, and charged attacked that you need to time in order to survive. But it doesn't have a stamina system nor do you have to go back to where you died to get your stuff back. Also most enemies stay dead after you kill them. This game uses a very traditional checkpoint system. It's leveling up system is also quite straight forward this it less RPG and more 2D Zelda with unforgiving combat.
That being said I think this is a strength. I like the simple linear and tight structure of this game and I'm looking forward to the sequel. I bought this game on impulse and was expecting not to like it since I was starting to get tired of all these 2D Souls likes just not being that good or interesting. It turns all I really needed was something more traditional. Best surprise of this year so far.
Great graphics and usually fun combat but with no other strengths the game feels incredibly hollow.
Almost never cared or fet excited about anything that happened.
"Rebuild your kingdom" = gather some gold during tedious backtracking side quests and spend it rebuilding a few rooms. You can't even decide in which order.
Visiting a save point with arrow and potion refill, instead of refilling when saving (or running past), you have to watch a series of slow and annoying animations. It doesnt sound too bad but when you are hurt and have to refill your health it could easily take over half a minute, just pressing X and watching the slow and detailed animations of how Reggi refills a potion, drinks it, refills it again, refills arrows, saves. If the save shows up first, you may run a bit, find refills and either run back to save or continue and if you die, rewatch the animations.
Pick up stuff from enemies. Instead of just picking things up, you are forced to watch slow and annoying animations of Reggi chopping away pieces from dead beetles etc etc. To gather loot from an encounter can easily take 30 seconds. Most loot is useless.
Fall damage. Jumping from twice your height or so causes fall damage. Running to the same boss 3 or 4 times, you start feeling it. I often found myself just taking the fall damage as climbing down the same series of ladders just felt too time consuming and frustrating.
Prepare to hear the same quirky lines of dialogue over and over for each boss you get stuck on. Why just not save that you have heard the line already and spare you the frustration?
40% of the game or so, you backtrack. Even during main story.
Just feels so empty. Cute graphics. Some nice boss battles. Little else going for it. A lot of effort and love put into it but it was misdirected and went into creating annoying animations of Reggi slowly picking up an arrow. Could have spent that love on creating side quests that were not just "backtrack to X and kill X enemies".
A good game with nice art and a simple but good story. The game has some funny references to various characters that made me smile a couple times. From the cons I can single out a little scarce animations and dodges that do not always predictably work (a little annoying when I played on max difficulty). Got all achivements with pleasure!
As an indie game dev, I'm jealous of how good this game is. The best/most surprising comparison I can make is that it feels a lot like Elden Ring in terms of combat. The combat involves actually learning the moves of the opponent, and a LOT of rolling (and a lot of dying. In the beginning anyway).
I'm only a couple hours in and I'm hooked already. This is literally the first game review I've posted on here. And I felt compelled to because of how much fun I'm having.
