Kate Walker, a young ambitious lawyer from New York, is handed what seems to be a fairly straightforward assignment. Just a quick stopover to handle the sale of an old automaton factory hidden in the alpine valleys, then straight back home to New York. Little did she imagine, when embarking on this task, that her life would be turned upside down.

On her expedition across Europe, traveling from Western Europe to the far reaches of Eastern Russia, she encounters a host of incredible individuals and locations full of extraordinary machines and an amazing atmosphere. In her attempt to track down Hans, the genius inventor - the final key to unlock the secret of Syberia - she will traverse both land and time on a journey that will throw all that she values into question, while the deal she sets out to sign turns into a life-changing experience.

Saviour of Adventure games

Posted on 2010-03-25 09:55:39 bywooglah's avatarwooglah:

This game saved the genre all by itself, in the time of dire crisis. Without Syberia in 2002, we would not have 15+ adventures per year now days. Sokal's emotional story of Kate Walker and Automatons touched the hearts of players around the world and renewed the faith in Adventure games once again. Setting focus on the characters and letting them develop the well written story wasread more a brilliant plan that worked.
Also, featuring great and detailed 2D pre-rendered graphics with well animated 3D characters, superb sound and dynamic background music, Syberia was and is a masterpiece.

Clasic Adventure Game

This game has a fascinating story based in an alternate reality where mechanical machines called Automitons (akin to robots but with clockwork mechanics rather than electrical).
Kate walker is a lawyer trying to finalise a sale of a company when the owner of the company dies. She journeys through various locations with different themes trying to find the sole heir of the more On her journey she learns about the heir's life and fascinations.
Syberia is often compared to The Longest Journey, probably because they look similar graphics wise. The fact the it is compared to The Longest Journey (probably my favourite game ever) led me to buy this game. I was NOT disappointed! My copy has install limits so this, on GOG, is an awesome buy.
NOTE: This game is actually split in two instalments Both Syberia and Syberia II. The two games were going to be released as one but the developers decided to split it. The reason I mention this is the story in Syberia just stops at the end without questions answered. If you intend to buy this game you will more than likely need to buy Syberia II. Syberia II has improved graphics over Syberia.
The story of Syberia (both 1 & 2 combined) is a powerful one. Many players online have admitted to crying at the end of the story, implying that the story is very moving. Kotaku reported that the developers are working on a Syberia 3 (see ). Whilst I am excited about this, I am also sceptical. The story ended well and answered all my questions. It is possible that a third game could ruin this.
If you like adventure games, particularly The Longest Journey, then this (indeed these for Syberia 1 & 2) are a must buy.

Benot Sokal was truly a visionary

Posted on 2010-03-25 14:25:40 byeagle123's avatareagle123:

Microids was one of the main reasons that I started playing adventure games. I actually played the first Syberia as a game console port and then moved on to Syberia II for the PC and lastly on to Paradise. Sokal hasalways managed to keep his games extremely fresh and innovative. The storyline is very engaging and when you finish this first one, then ending will definitely leaveread more you feeling breathless. I am so glad that GOG has been allowed to place this masterful program upon their site. If you have not had a chance to experience anything by Benoit Sokal or from Microids in general, this is a game that I would very highly reccommend for those that love a good and masteful storyteliing as well as a great adevnture game!
