Description
The year is 2050. The ocean is the next frontier and war inevitably reaches the depths of the sea. As an independent mercenary working for a corporate conglomerate, you pilot the latest fighter subs to protect the corporation's interests in exchange for cold hard cash. With 5 different theaters of operations (of varying difficulty) and an interesting mix of aerial-style submarine tactics, you'll be fighting fierce battles for corporate territory beneath the waves.

The Plot Deepens is an expansion disk for Subwar 2050. It features a few new subs and weapons across three new campaigns: the Bermuda Triangle, the Mediterranean and The North Cape. In each of these campaigns, you'll launch your attack sub from its home carrier to protect the interests of multinational corporations engaged in mining, research, and development under the sea.
  • Includes the original Subwar 2050 and its expansion, The Plot Deepens.
  • Pilot four types of submarine including deep-sea exploration vessels, reconnaissance subs, and highly maneuverable fighter submarines.
  • Explore thousands of square miles of accurately mapped 3d underwater seascapes in four different multi-mission campaigns: the Antarctic Ocean, the North Atlantic, the South China Sea, and the Sea of Japan.
  • 'Simulated Combat' mode lets you master maneuvers such as Knuckles and Deep Dives before entering a mission.

Futuristic Submarine Warefare

This is a nice futuristic submarine simulator, combat aspects included hiding from the enemy, active/passive sonar to target and track enemy subs. Violent turns even create turbulence that decoy incoming torpedoes, running full speed will generate loud noise that will announce your presence to everyone listening as well. Add thermal layers (active sonar will be reflected by those) at different depths and wildlife (yes, the occasional wale and even gigantic calamari/octopi show up as well), whats not to like? Gameplay wise you get to visit many locations that sometimes require specific subs (very deep sea level will crush the smaller more agile models), missions consist mainly of search and destroy and pre planned strikes or patrol duties, some have triggers so you can count with some surprises along the way as well. Most missions will give you a wingman as well, basic commands can be transmitted by short laser communication (as mentioned elsewhere, the undercurrents manual/magazine is a great read with some historic submarine facts) As this is "the future", getting killed or captured can be dealt with the right amount of money, however sub selection and weapon load out at mission start is free of charge. The only thing preventing me from giving this one 5 stars is the sometimes repetitive combat, but that is inevitable while dealing with submarines I guess.

One of the Best of it's Type

It's a gorram shame there aren't more underwater combat sims such as this and Archimedian Dynasty, because they're a close cousin to space sims in a lot of ways. That being said, this game is a damned fun time, and if you have any interest in the subject or just sci-fi combat, you owe it to yourself to try one of Microprose's lesser-known gems.

Unique Game

Great atmosphere! Really makes you feel like you are underwater. Amazing graphics for the time and still holds up well enough. Undercurrents mag is a great read. Very unique game, definitely worth trying. Only downside for me was that I found the game difficulty to be very high. So glad that it is on here now so that we can have a support community to get through the missions.

Good sim that didn't age so well

This game once opened up a new genre. When it came out, it was the only futuristic 3D sub simulator on the market, right at a time when "seaQuest" starred big on TV and "Hunt for Red October" had sparked some (horrible) playable adaptations the left gamers wanting (begging) for something better. But that was 1993 and since then SubWar 2050 has been surpassed by Schleichfahrt, which is a worthy "successor" (also on GoG) and it's offspring, leaving for the original little more than the nostalgia and coolness factor. SubWar 2050 was THE surprise hit and must-buy simulation of 1993 the hit a nerve of the time. It combined what gamers had learned in "Red October" about thermal layers, sonar and tactics, and combined it with the futuristic tech from the "seaQuest" TV series, together with a dystopian tale of mercs in a post-apocalyptic sub-aquatic world where money means everything. At the time, this was just what the doctor ordered. The "Under-Currents magazine" is a true gem adds greatly to immersion. A read is highly recommended. With the mood side, you "dive" into the game to hear whales singing on sonar (like in the movie), sonar waves get reflected by inverse thermal layers that you can hide in... a dream come true. Difficulty level is quite high (adequate for a sim). Missions frequently need to be reloaded and repeated. Plus, not all missions are combat centered. Sign up with the right contractor, and you might find yourself herding whales (and whishing they had smarter AI). However! Actual story elements are minimal to non-existing. Sound quality is low. The intermissions are limited to stills, rare, and look dated. Graphic quality is painfully low. Esp. the sea floor lacks detail (if it is visible at all). Most of the time you stare at a pixilated HUD. All this was not an issue at the time, but more than 25 years later it means that it is very likely you may not actually play past the first one or two missions.

Great, atmospheric game

Essentially a great stealth game of superb atmosphere and some great mechanics, slightly flawed by some level and game design decisions. Although I'd run into some trouble with running it correctly on modern machine at times, it does recognise joystick on a pc and contrary to another reviewers rant, it does not require manual to override copy protection, one simply presses enter to override it which I'm guessing he didn't figure out. Definitely worthy of checking out as long as you keep in mind this is a tense tactical stealth game rather than straighforward military shooter.
