Description

Spirited Thief is a tactical turn-based stealth game with a twist: take your time to scout ahead and plan your heist as your ghostly friend, then use your knowledge to break in and break out with pricey loot.

Another job gone wrong... Elaj - unlucky thief with a few magic tricks upon his sleeves - and Trin - his partner-in-crime who happens to be an intangible spirit - are on the verge of being kicked out of the ruthless Thieves Guild!

Determined to prove themselves to the guild, and make some sweet steals in the process, Elaj and Trin must work together to infiltrate heavily protected vaults, mysterious crypts, and more. With the occasional help of allies, what secrets, treasures, and troubles will the pair get their hands on?

Scout undetected as Trin, the spirit. Explore, plan, and locate secret passages and treasures without the burden of a physical body.

  • Steal as Elaj, the thief. Loot as much as you can without giving the guards time to react.
  • Outsmart enemies, sneak through locked doors, and break down magical barriers. No door can stop you.
  • With turn-based gameplay, get in and get out before the guards become aware of your presence. You’ve only got so long, so use your turns wisely.

  • Infiltrate wealthy castles, dark dungeons, and occult lairs under the guidance of the infamous thieves' guild.
  • Upgrade your skills with new and exciting abilities in exchange for your ill-gotten gains.
  • Study your briefings so you know what you’re getting into and what to look out for. Will you take it slow and steady to find all the secrets, or is a smash-and-grab more up your street?

A hidden gem! Turn-based heist simulator

Can't believe this hasn't had any reviews. It is a real joy to play and captures brilliantly the feeling of planning a heist, having things go wrong and escaping in the nick of time. I highly recommend it. Think of it as a stealth-focused x-com and you won't go far wrong. Invisible Inc is an obvious influence as well (though I haven't played that so can't compare the two.) The basic idea is that you're a thief with a ghost companion. Each mission is divided into two parts. First, controlling the ghost, you scout out the building you are about to rob - figuring out the location of the guards, loot and so on. Then, controlling the thief, you go in and do the heist. As the ghost, you can take your time and getting seen by guards only teleports you back to the starting area. As the thief, you're racing against the clock, as each turn ticks up a counter that makes the guards more aggressive. Getting seen by guards ticks up the counter as well, and staying in their cone of vision means insta-death; staying hidden is essential to success. Helpfully, the game shows you where any guard you can see is going to be next turn, and what direction they will face. You also have abilities like bonking a guard on the head or turning yourself briefly invisible, but these use up one of your two actions (each action can be used to either move or use an ability, in classic x-com style.) Abilities have long cool-downs or limited uses per mission, so using them tactically is important. Each mission has an item you must steal to win, plus optional loot. There's locked doors, which require finding a key, levers that open doors elsewhere on the level, teleporters, etc. etc., making each level a complex puzzle. The game has 25-ish levels that are hand-designed (rather than procedurally generated) and a basic but serviceable story unfolds over the course of the campaign. There's about 30 hours of playtime here. I'd recommend playing on hard if you are used to turn-based strategy games.

Excellent little turn based stealth game

It really reminds me of Invisible inc. Considering Klei have no desire to make Invisible inc into a series, this is a pretty excellent little spiritual successor. That being said, it comes with enough of its own ideas to be unique and an experience, that stands on its own merits. I'm having a blast with it and I hope the devs work on a sequel / DLC. It's got a lot of potential and is definitely worth playing. I haven't completed it, so I can't quite tell you how long it is.

Greater than the sum of its parts

Having put over 500 hours in Invisible Inc (easy to play in the background), Spirited Thief is a spiritual successor that elaborates on its basic mechanics, while building on the atmosphere and setting of Thief. This functions more as a puzzle game than a more free-form stealth experience, but you're given enough tools and abilities that it's never an insurmountable challenge. I give the experience a 5/5 because of its clear mastery of its mechanics, its warm atmosphere, and the more-than-competent writing. Don't let my comparison to other titles weigh down your assessment of this game. This is clearly a developer who saw mechanics and built on them masterfully. Give this game a shot!

It's good at the start and gets better

The art and initial tone of the game set you up for a stealth game where you dodge some guards, get some loot, do this well enough to not embarass yourself in front of the Thieve's Guild, etc. However, during the second act, both the story and gameplay start to take a turn, and this will essentially be the point where the game clicks for you or you get tired by it. Spirited Thief just starts asking a lot more of you. The story goes from odd jobs here and there with laid back banter to going up against fantasy Illuminati and coming to terms with somebody's death. The gameplay, that started with keeping track of a few guards while using your favourite tool for a mission, grows to having massive maps where you have to control 2-4 people and learn that you can't have a "favourite tool" anymore. As you're scouting with your spirits, you have to plot out a path in your head for everyone, which thieves to take with you, and which tools should they take and when should they use them. It kind of gets out of hand, but something about it clicked for me. Maybe it was the setting up of a status quo for a few long hours and upending it that made it stand out for me. Or just the good old feeling of beating a hard challenge.
