Sengoku Rance

Sengoku Rance is a tactical role-playing game set in 16th century Japan during the Sengoku period. Be warned, it is quite hardcore, and sensitive players should probably avoid this altogether. Sengoku Rance is an amazing game. I wasn't expecting much going into this eroge but it ended up being one of the most fun SRPGs I've had the joy of playing. Managing your conquest of Japan and building your military is unbelievably fun and no two runs will be the exact same. There are a ton of decisions to make on the fly and the game's multiple routes and NG+ make replaying it a joy. The ero scenes even tie into an important mechanic for how you proceed on your conquest! The combat has a surprising amount of depth too, so battles are never a slog given the importance of choosing units and tactics in the middle of battle. Furthermore, the plot is shockingly good. I wasn't expecting an eroge filled with black humour to get me to care deeply about the characters and storyline, yet Alicesoft managed to do so. Having played some of their other games like Evenicle this is a consistent quality the developer has. Even the soundtrack is excellent; I'm dumbfounded that Shade went this hard for an eroge OST! Sengoku Rance is a 10/10 and I'm happy to see it on GOG. I've already played the game's Mangagamer release off their site but I'll be purchasing this when I can.

I have yet to buy the game, am a family man so it's not ideal to buy a game at this point, but I have a lot of fond memories on this game and can definitely recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind strategy games and anime waifus (with some "forceful action" at times). I remember being hooked to this for multiple weeks in a row and because of the type of game, and it was amazing. Now this is a major point that this is a strategy game before it's a visual novel - you can "use your hand" in the gallery if that's what you wish, but it's 99% a strategy game with 1% anime waifus. Pros: 1. Fun gameplay and lots of freedom in strategizing 2. Great story and characters - the character interactions tend to be fun to watch 3. Crazy amounts of content - you can literally spend hundreds of hours in this game without seeing 100% of the content. Also some "paths" and characters have extremely difficult requirements to unlock/conquer. 4. The "scenes" have a lot of variety for every taste. 5. Almost every playthrough will be different from the last (And you have so many different paths to choose) 6. New-game plus is rewarding and spices up your new games. Cons: 1. The biggest issue is: RNG. Most of the battles are RNG, most of your friction in this game will be "RNG". If you want to play optimally, you WILL need to save-scum. 2. No in-game guides/hints, anything. This game is amazing but its learning curve is similar to a cliff - Even a simple guide to get the initial +2 movement fans (which is required for a good run) has a multiple page guide, and that's just the introduction. You have a book-worth of guides for all the content, thankfully u don't need to 100% complete the game & U can just use them to have an idea of what you should aim for, 3. The main story path forces you to play a certain way, lack of freedom - thankfully NG+ will resolve it (kill the monke). Summary: It's amazing and an experience if u like anime waifus + strategy games. 5/5

I remember importing this from Japan ages ago and using a guide to try and 100% it, and failing at least 5 times because of some weird RNG. It's a weird mix of RPG, Visual Novel and Tactics. The story is over the top. For those used to the Rance series it's not unusual, with beloved characters returning and new ones being introduced. Transforming historical Japanese warlords into anime girls with their own tropes is a fun hook (if you like the idea then Eiyuu Senki is for you). The H scenes are standard Rance fare, mostly vanilla with a LOT of dialogue. I dare say it was ahead of it's time when it came out, these days a lot of mobile games ripped off the whole aesthetic and the tactical/map painting with waifu collecting gameplay. Overall it's not for everyone, but if you like Hentai Strategic RPGs, then don't miss out on this gem.
