Description
Sengoku Jidai Gold contains the main game Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun and the following DLCs:

  • Sengoku Jidai: Mandate of Heaven
  • Sengoku Jidai: Gempei Kassen
  • Sengoku Jidai – Genko MP skirmishes
  • Sengoku Jidai – Genko Campaign (2nd Mongol Invasion of Japan 1281)
  • Sengoku Jidai – Bjeongja Horan Campaign (2nd Manchu Invasion of Korea 1636)

Sixteenth century East Asia is in turmoil. In Japan, the ruling Shogun family has lost its grip on the country. A civil war is brewing as regional lords actively expand their influence. In Korea, the Joseon dynasty is paralysed by factional struggle within the royal court. In China, the might of the Ming dynasty is waning due to rebellions and foreign incursions. These seemingly separate internal conflicts will pave the way for an international war involving the three countries.

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun is a turn-based tactical and strategic game set during this turbulent time; primarily focusing on the Japanese Warring States period and Japanese Invasion of Korea. Other armies from East Asia are also made available to simulate different conflicts across the region.

Take command of diverse armies which employ varying tactical doctrines. Lead your chosen army and their generals to victory in set-piece historical battles or "what-if" skirmish situations against an AI or human opponent. Become more ambitious and achieve regional domination through the operational campaign layer where you have to deal with the consequence of preceding battles.

To become the Japanese Shogun, to overthrow the Emperor of the Middle Kingdom, or to establish a Pan-Asian Empire, one requires mastery of the battlefield. In this time of turmoil, Asia is yours for the taking!
  • Accurate simulation of East Asian battle in the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly the Sengoku Jidai (Japanese Warring States period) and Imjin War (Japanese invasion of Korea and Chinese intervention).
  • Unique graphic style influenced by Japanese paintings.
  • Historical scenarios covering key engagements of the period
  • Campaign mode allows you to rewrite history as you play through key campaigns of the era. Terrain, manpower, supply, attrition, sieges and economic damage all need to be taken into account. The decisions you make on the strategic map will affect the forces available to you in battle. The results of each battle will have long-term effects on the strength, experience and elan of your units.
  • Classic Turn-based, tile based gameplay.
  • Easy to use interface, hard to master gameplay.
  • Battalion-sized units.
  • Named generals who can influence combat and morale of units under their command as well as engage enemy generals in personal combat.
  • Single player and multiplayer battle modes.
  • Skirmish system allows unlimited “what-if” scenarios using historically realistic armies from carefully researched army lists, on realistic computer generated terrain maps. Armies covered include numerous Japanese clans, Ikko Ikki, Wokou Pirates, Joseon Korean, Ming Chinese, Chinese and Tribal rebels, Eastern and Western Mongols, Jurchen and Imperial Manchu (Qing Chinese) armies. Each faction has multiple lists covering the development of their armies through the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • Skirmish scenarios are randomly generated and include open battle, attack on a defensive position, defence of a defensive position, awaiting reinforcements, enemy awaiting reinforcements, flank march.
  • In skirmishes players can pick their armies from the army list or allow the computer to pick the army for them.
  • Effective AI makes sound tactical decisions. Historical battle AI customised to the historical tactical situation.
  • 6 difficulty levels allow the challenge to increase as you develop your battlefield skills.
  • Numerous different unit organisations, combat capabilities and tactical doctrines allow full representation of tactical differences and developments through the period.
  • Mod friendly game system with built-in map editor.
  • Multiplayer mode allows historical scenarios and “what-if” scenarios to be played by two players using Slitherine’s easy to use PBEM server.

Minimal in presentation, deep on tactics

Sengoku Jidai is one of these games that, from the screenshots alone, grabs your attention. You know this game will immerse you with it's visuals, fittingly influenced by the art of the Edo period in which the game is set. And it's all here : Beautifully drawn portraits, maps and UI. If you are mildly fond of these aesthetics you will feel right at home. Sadly, this is where the immersion ends. The music, while fitting for the setting, is functional at best, looping to often while trying to hard to be "epic" with it's overblown and computerized synth VST's. For a turn based strategy game, it feels to distracting. (turning on the "Shogun 2: Total War" soundtrack will greatly improve your experience. ) Where the music is to much, the animation is to little. While the art is beautiful, the units on screen barely show any signs of movement. While moving you don't see moving feet, while attacking you never see spears rustling, bows firing, arrows flying or swords dueling. It is there, but it's all numbers and little visual clues like little blood splats when close combat units engage, or smoke clouds when guns are fired. Think of it like moving around chess pieces. And given the art, this bothers me "But Moonsorrow.." I hear you say "why 4 stars, when all you do is whining about animation in hardcore turn based strategy games, you pleb ?". Well, my Paradox and Slytherin loving history buffs, because the game is actually great when you can look behind the surface. The level of thought and care that went into the tactical gameplay is astounding. If you love your realism and the TW Games are to easy for you, then you're in for a treat. You'll get an abundance of units to choose from, each with it's own weaknesses and strength. Terrain to use to your advantage, occasional randomness to consider, cover and unit distance to master and a clever AI that WILL put your skills to the test. You will have to learn a lot, but you will be rewarded for your patience.

Hard but fun game

I thoroughly enjoy this game along with Pike & Shot and Field of Glory II (also on GOG). The positives (and negatives) of the game have already been covered in previous reviews, however, there is one thing I'd like to add. All three of the previously mentioned games have an easy to use workshop like function built into the game. You can just press a link in the title screen, a list of user scenarios appears from which you can select and download. The user scenarios for Pike & Shot and Field of GloryII are quite numerous but the one for this title is very small (from memory - less than 5?). I don't believe you will regret buying the, especially at its sale price.

Nice artwork, strong AI, and fun tactics

I like the Japanese artwork. The battles are very tactical with an extremely smart AI that will try to fully surround your units and wipe them out if you don't use careful tactics. There are many army units to choose from with your limited funds. You can recruit large basic units with many soldiers that rout easily, or buy small elite samurai cavalry good at archery and melee, or quality samurai infantry troops. And then there are all the Korean and Chinese army units even including cannon. There are sandbox campaigns which I like because you have to recruit troops and fight over provinces in classic "paint a map" style. You get a vast array of campaigns and factions to choose from including Gempei war, Sengoku era, invasion of Korea, war in China, China vs Korea and the Mongol invasion of Japan. That is a lot of content to dig into. The white style art of the battlefield is nice, and you can use mods on the Slitherine forum for this game to make the grass green or deep orange for variety. I really like the orange style. The original creamy white art is most similar to traditional Japanese art from centuries past.

Excellent battles

This game was made for the success of the medieval japan mod for Pike&Shot, so it has the same engine. I very like playing its battles, even the campaign system is quite boring. So you may love lauching some random battles time to time, and I would give 5 stars. Why 3 stars? because the P&S engine can't rebind keys, so it's becoming boring to play with a french keyboard. If you use english keyboard, you must buy.

Rich in tactics limited in strategy

Probably the most interesting out of all sister games. Very well made presentation of the era. Great tactical game but limited campaign.
