Great game, dont buy it

Rollerdrome is a truly great game that ponders the question of "What if THPS, but with a gun?" with an incredibly satisfying answer. The gameplay loop, scoring system, visuals, and OST made for an incredibly fun experience that I didn't let go until I 100% completed it (around 20 hours on Steam). My issues with the game mostly come from wanting MORE of the game (more stage variety, weapons, enemy types, music, bosses, tricks, etc) which I view as almost more of a backhanded compliment to the rest of our the game. Really, the type of thing DLCs or even a sequel could've done to expand the core concept. So, why don't I recommend it? Simple, Private Division (former subsidiary of Take-Two) vaporized the studio (Roll7) out of existence in mid 2024. In other words, your money is not directly/indirectly going to the studio or devs, but 2K/Take-Two to do whatever with. Especially with how recent the death is and how it didn't even cross anybody's mind to just let the studio go and let them at least attempt to fend for themselves, I can't in good faith recommend buying it.

A bit repetitive at the end, but great

Rollerdrome is indeed a game like Tony Hawk but with guns. And that works, for the most past. The gameplay loop feels fresh, fast and cool. But the thing is that there is no change from the first arena to the last. No unique levels of weird events to pull off. Every arena is: enter, shoot everyone, leave. And that is fine at the start, but later levels just add more and more and more enemies. However, push through all that and become a master. Suddenly you don't care how many enemies there are, because you quickly end them all, while doing tricks, evades, and awesome headshots.

The perfect game that killed its studio

First of all: Rollerdrome is not for everyone. No game is. Is it worth it if you're looking for a cRPG? Not really, no. But given what it is -- and what it attempts to be --, it is the perfect game. A mix of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on roller skates with Max Payne, all coated with a Jean Giraud/Mœbius art style. You play as Kara Hassan, an up-and-coming athlete, and without wanting to spoil anything, the game has some rather nice and intricate story prologues to each of the chapters, done in first person but retaining the same graphical style, in case you want something more to your arena roller skate shooter. I found the story to be extremely interesting, and you can discover it at your own pace, but some people will probably find it "too political"; to those, Roll7 included a Skip button (though you do have to play it the first time around, but you can head straight for the door and just start the mission). It's there, but it's not forced on anyone. Graphically, the game is gorgeous. It feels like we're playing a Mœbius comic. Retrofuturistic, cel-shaded with thin lines, nice effects all around, superb use of colour. In terms of gameplay, while a controller is recommended, the game plays wonderfully with keyboard and mouse -- controlling the camera with the mouse is arguably the superior way to play it, I'd even say. It's a third person game (if you exclude the story portions), extremely fluid, with tight, responsive controls. You never stop once you start going (unless you hold the back directional input), so you can focus on the combat and pulling tricks to replenish your ammo. It can be hard at times, but there are accessibility options in case you want to enjoy the game but are struggling (it can get a bit overwhelming). The game is extremely well optimized, it will run on pretty much anything, so you should be fine. Though Roll7 will no longer get our money, this is a game I can't recommend enough for what it accomplished. If you're remotely interested, get it.

wasted premise

Rollerdrome wastes a cool premise and no small amount of stylish artwork on conflicting mechanics and a dearth of gameplay length/variety. You can't enjoy shooting, because every couple shots you need to do a trick to reload; and you can't enjoy doing tricks, because up to a dozen people are chucking grenades and what-have-you your way at any given time. That -- coupled with the fact the whole "tournament" setup is laughably short (only 11 maps, which all sorta resemble each other) -- means you'll be doing the same things on the same maps over and over until you grind out the challenges needed to advance. Wish I knew about Roll7 folding before I bought the game --- but then I also wish I'd read a review or watched gameplay before I spent time trying to enjoy it...
