Immersive and surreal
Note: At the time of this review, the GOG release of POOLS does not include the native Mac and Linux builds available with the Steam and itch.io releases. They might be added here in the future, but you should double-check the store page if that's important to you! That aside, the atmosphere in this first-person exploration game is wonderful! There's not much of a story here, but as a tone piece I was engrossed the whole way through. The horror elements come solely from the surreal environment that you take at your own pace—there are no chase sequences or monsters that will grab the camera and scream at you. The few "deaths" that can occur involve purposely walking off ledges and are instantly undone with no loss of progress. There are a surprising number of game options as well—it's easy to scale down the visuals for low-end hardware, to remove all of the "camera-like" visual effects, or even to change the sound effects from squeaky shoes to bare feet.
