Beautiful, Great Story, Painful Gameplay

I played this on the PSX and PC CD-ROM, and I still have it in those formats, mostly because I couldn't finish it, even using walkthroughs. Nobody will ever complain this game is too short or too easy. The visuals are the best part. It's dark atmospheric steampunk with lots of rain and ambient noise. It is third person. There is combat and there is jumping and climbing, much like Tomb Raider or Prince of Persia. Unfortunately, it was made when designers still thought it was a good idea to make you rotate your character and then walk forward using very separate controls, like the original Resident Evil, and on many indoor scenes the camera view is obscured, making it very difficult to do the acrobatics. Some levels are long and you cannot save games at just any point, so it is quite easy to lose all your lives. If they made save games available at any time, that alone would make it much more enjoyable. However, they just had not developed that convention for PSX games. I would recommend playing it for the art, but it could have stood a lot of improvements.

Great game, great rerelease, flawed port

I've played the original PSX version a lot and it's one of my favorite action-adventures out there. If you like old-school action-adventures from the era (Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver, Shadowman etc), you will probably enjoy this too. So I am glad to see that the PC version is now easily playable on modern systems. Your mileage may vary, but at least for me this version just works. Modern resolutions are supported (at least up until 2k, maybe even higher), and I've not had any performance issues or crashes. However, to me there is one big flaw with this version: For some reason the PC version does not have all the music tracks - and the music is one of the best parts of the game. On PSX, there are 2 tracks per level and then one track for the boss fight. On PC, there is only one track per level which continues to play even during the boss fights. As far as I can tell, this is not a problem with this re-release version, but just how the original PC version worked.

Nostalgia blow, yet lacks a spark or two

My pack-in game with the PsOne (waaay) back in the days. Can't believe, this is actually legaly playable on a Win11 machine in 2022! Never tried the PC version (didn't even have a PC back then lol) so I never actually got familiar with the keyboard controlls. For everyone who remembers the PSX gamepad controlls, this may present a bit of a challenge at first but hey, "practise makes perfect", right? Remeber those hard 90s SNES platformers that were so punishing for every mistake you made? O.D.T carries exactly that amount of "hard" into the 3D platforming world. You'll be crying with joy at times upon seeing that red/green savepoint mark, trust me :) It's not a bad thing though! Yes, character navigation is clumsy, camera gets silly at times but that all just adds up to the right amount of challenge, which is far from rage-quiting (compared to some modern AAA games). Nostalgia for retro games is one thing but some 25-ish years later, it would be nice to see some resolution change options in the Menu as well as some pack-in digital goodies (artworks, manual, wallpapers, etc.). Overall a pleasant blast from the past :) A solid 7/10 from me.

Tank control enthusiasts only.

Enter only if you are comfortable with keyboard only tank controls that require precision jumps and control, and where a single mistake can cost you one of your lives. Actual save points are very sparse (places where you can create a loadable save), with checkpoints (a place where you respawn if you die), only very slightly more numerous than save points. If you die near a save point, it's always better to load the save instead of continuing with one life down. Also, the save points are single use only. Up to you if you save immediately every time of save it for a bit later after you progress more so more progress gets saved. As for the game itself, it's actually pretty fun. If we ignore the sometimes very annoying saving mechanic (expect to replay certain parts a lot), it's some great old-school platforming. Personally, I never had issued with tank controls but the things the game requires you to do sometimes can be pretty nasty. The characters have two types of jump. A running jump and stationary jump. For the running jump, you actually have to be running for a little bit before jumping for it to trigger. This can take while to figure and can be pretty tricky to do on small platforms and ledges (the game has a lot of them). Also read the manual for controls and how to do certain manoeuvres. There are weapons, spells, items (grenades, mines) and a large variety of enemies. There is also levelling, for health, weapon (so you can use upgrade items you find, which require a certain threshold of this skill) and spirit for spells from crystals. First time you use a crystal, you receive the spell and then you can upgrade it up to three times using the same type of crystals later when you find them, with the required spirit amount increasing every time. You get a choice of 4 characters, who are each better/worse at different things and also get different max levels for their weapons and spells. Overall, a recommend. IF you are fine with keyboard only platforming.

Intense game, sort of

!The PC release is missing some music in the levels the playstation release had! So basically ODT is an third person action game but with a couple of easy puzzles, a little bit of character upgrades (you get XPs you then put into guns, armor, or spirit so you could use weapon/spell upgrades) and a ton of secrets and optional jumping. Yes, jumping. And it's a weird clumsy jumping too. Fortunately only optional stuff is hidden behind some insane jump sections, but sometimes the game requires it for progress and that's where it gets infuriating. Why? The game has an oldschool playstation system. Limited lives, single use savepoints, checkpoints, and deathpits everywhere. So if a game requires you to go through a lengthy jumping section to progress, gives you only a checkpoint somewhere far behind, and puts a ton of deathtraps in the way then it can get really frustrating (yes, that's what happens in the very last section of the game before the final fight) But otherwise the game is kinda fun and it's somewhat interesting in its wackiness too. The story is very simple and weird, the environments of the game don't make much sense (I mean there's an abbatoir level followed up by a spa level lol), and you're constantly on edge because of the traps and enemies, but it plays good and feels kinda rewarding when you finally get to another level. What you really need to know about the game is that secrets are not that optional, sometimes a crucial item needed for progress or a button opening door to the next level is hidden in a secret room. To go down the ladder or down the ledge where hidden items often are you need to turn your back to the ledge/ladder and press space+down at the same time. And spells are you friend, especially the healing and mana spell. Without those the game gets insanely difficult. And shield spell is also your friend because contrary to what the name suggests it's an attack spell lol and you really need it against some enemies.
