Why? Just why?
Why is this of lesser audio quality in comparison to the CD release and in comparison to the Diamond edition's side download (THAT WAS AVAILABLE ON GoG UNTIL YOU TOOK IT DOWN)? I checked and compared, and a few of the ones from the 'enhanced' edition have bad clicking sounds.
Beamdog, I don't understand you: even your other enhanced edition soundtracks were at least justifiable since they were enhanced in quality in one way or another and since you own the property, but - for some strange reason - you forgot to at least maintain the original quality with this?
I own the original soundtrack which did not include the 3 new bonus tracks. Otherwise both are the same.
The tracks are all relatively short (30 seconds - 2 minutes), the entire album is just above 2 hours. The recording quality of the MP3 versions varies widely between 64 and 320 kbps.
While no human ear can hear the difference between 320 kbps sampling rate and a raw recording, 64kbps vs. 320kbps is audible. However, you still need to actively listen for the differences.
The genre is general ambience tracks leaning towards a medieval touch with a strong focus on string instruments. The album includes no studio recordings of natural music, the sound is 100% computer generated, with some shortcomings in quality born from that very source.
If you are an artist yourself, familiar with the limitations of keyboards available on the general market, you will most likely notice the typical telltale cuts and clips in the voices, especially in the string instruments being cut off in an unnatural way. Some people may not even notice, but if you got a trained ear, this feat can get increasingly annoying over time. It still is good music - just don't expect the type of organic flow and rich sound that natural instruments bring to the table.
While the composition by itself is great, most tracks are "functional", tied into the game. They make good "background noise" while you are working or doing other things, but are not necessarily worth listening to just by themselves.
There are a handful exceptions in this OST that can stand their own, but IMHO not quite enough to justify the full price of 10 Euro. If you can, get the soundtrack on a discount or in a bundle.
Is it THAT hard to even sell the original soundtrack at CD Audio quality? Or like a option between FLAC and 256kbps MP3/OGG ?
Beamdog needs to be CANCELLED.
Anyone who owns the original Neverwinter Nights on here knows you get the soundtrack with it. The original soundtrack, ripped at 128kbps; which is as low as you can possibly get without completely obliterating the audio fidelity. For a long time that was the only available source for the soundtrack, unless you wanted to shell out serious cash for a physical copy and rip the audio yourself. Why is this important? Because you are buying a lossless (flac) version of that physical copy. It has zero loss in fidelity from the original source. If you are listening through a tin-can you might not notice, but anyone with ears can tell the difference right away between the recordings.
So no, you are not getting "the same thing that used to be free", far from it. Like you would spend the money on a "Remastered" version of a game, this is no different; there is almost 8x as much audio data in these recordings as the free version (From 128kbps to over 900kbps). Considering you get the free version when you buy the base Neverwinter Nights Enhanced (it comes with your copy of Neverwinter Nights Diamond), I don't see why anyone would complain about being offered a high-fidelity version of the soundtrack. You'll almost always notice these people are non-owners of the title, although they'll claim to own it on another platform which is a definite lie.
So if you want a copy of the super-rare and expensive soundtrack in a bitrate which is significantly higher than the low-quality one that comes free with your purchase, this is it. And it is very much worth the purchase, if you are interested in the music enough to want higher quality copies. If you want tin-can quality, stick to the free one you get with your free copy of Diamond Edition you get for buying the base Enhanced Edition.
"Boo hoo, I get a free complete game set and a free copy of the same low-quality rip that's always come with it, but I also want the Enhanced Edition soundtrack for FREE! Boo hoo!" - Non-Owners
