Description
The mixture of cold Atlantic water and coarse sand in your mouth brings you back from unconsciousness. Surrounded by the wreckage of a boat’s hull, you can only draw one conclusion: your vessel has been torn apart by the submerged rocks. The secrets of the island must be uncovered if you are ever going to find a way to escape. Where is everyone; is the island really uninhabited; and what is lurking within the isolated caves?

A disturbing psychological thriller set in the bleakness of an abandoned island, combining exploration and in depth puzzle solving.

Montague's Mount is an exploration game with a story that leaves questions unanswered and open to interpretation. The developers have announced that they will return to Montague's Mount in one art form or another.
  • Voice narration by Derek Riddell (Ugly Betty, Frankie, No Angels, and more).
  • The first game to explore and promote the Irish language (Gaeilge).
  • Desolate yet beautiful environments filled with dark secrets and challenging puzzles.

Achievements...

I've played the game for some hours now. I hoped for some kind of a Dear Esther with gameplay. The game has a nice dark, melancholic mood, a atmospheric soundtrack and a good story-premise. But there is one really annoying "feature": The so called achievements... you get achievement-messages on your screen for walking around, for finding places, solving puzzles etc. It destroys the immersion of the game with such a regularity, I don't see the need to play further. I really hope there will be a possibility to deactivate these achievements with a patch. I simply can't understand why they implemented such a atmosphere-killer...

I wanted to love this game

Intriguing, mysterious; a story with potential, but alas I could not finish it. Not being able to save independently is pretty rough in an adventure game. This aspect in combination with the hindered mobility and poor lighting made the experience too frustrating to be entertaining.

immersive it's not

As an old-style gamer who cut her teeth on ZORK and Myst, I am ashamed. GREAT concept though. and hte art is magnificent. But they ruin the genre for yonger people with the total lack of and disregard for contextual thinking. If YOU were washed up on an island, would you be seeing notes stuck everywhere, tellign you what to do? NO. Would you be seeing a message pop up every now nad then about how you 'checked fifty items?' NO. You just washed up on a damn island. You go out, you pick stuffup, you USE YOUR BRAIN TO FIGURE IT OUT. What is WRONg with these people?

Decent game

I would like to start this review by stating: This game is surprisingly short, even for an indie title. That being said, everything about the delivery is rather satisfying. The mood, tone and story are all quite enthralling really. If there is one flaw, it is the bleak transition from day to night; where the daytime is noted by some measure of color, the night is a monochromatic terror. Not in the sense that it's horrifying, but in that it's INCREDIBLY easy to overlook puzzle pieces in the dark! I would also like to note that the so called "achievements" are a rather minor add-on, if even that. They occur only for a very BRIEF length of time in the first area of the game - hardly worth the title of "immersion killer", or at least in my honest opinion. If you're that picky about such a trifle matter, I believe that is more of a personal problem. All in all, I'd say the game is worth the price and worth the time. Again, the "achievements" aren't that big of a deal, if you're so hard to please that a handful of anything will spoil the ENTIRE game for you, than you'd make a decent critic. Without trying to spoil the game at large, I was left wanting and shall keep my eyes peeled for this developers future titles. Happy gaming!

Beware this EPISODIC game.

What I like: - This game has some good atmospheric bits. There are a few decent puzzles as well. What I dislike: - The game is episodic, you do not get the full experience thematic and storywise; it leaves many things unsolved and unanswered. I get the feeling the developer maliciously left the Episode I trait out of the title. - Most puzzles feel more like scavenger hunts instead of logic and creativity challenges. - The game is very buggy and glitchy. - The save system is awful, you need to wait until you solve some puzzle so you get a buggy checkpoint, that will probably reset things you had already solved or done. - As stated by the other reviewer, the immersion is constantly disturbed by achievement messages, and if you choose subtitles, they appear as a huge ugly box on the lower part of the screen. - The game stutters visually and in the audio department at random times; the mouse is unresponsive at random times as well. My PC runs other games at their highest settings, and this game doesn't look too demanding on the graphics department, the visual and audio flaws should not happen. I truly regret buying this game, there are better games for the same or lower price. Get Amnesia instead, or if you don't care about graphics, get The Cat Lady.
