Description
Nicollo Machiavelli stunned the world with his brutal analysis of power politics in government and religion. Now you can use those same devious strategies to conquer your rivals in this addicting simulation of 14th Century political life.

"A prudent ruler must not honor his word when it places him at a disadvantage."

Based on the multiple award-winning game Merchant Prince, Machiavelli the Prince allows you to rule the world and acquire cast wealth and power. You'll trade exotic goods with over 40 cities. You'll manipulate political and religious institutions using bribery, slander, and assassination. You'll field mercenary armies capable of crushing your enemy on medieval battlefields. And you'll experience it all through brand-new graphics.

"A wise prince should rely on what he controls, not on what he cannot control."

Play on a historical map, or in a randomly generated world. Face off against the sophisticated artificial intelligence of computer players. In Machiavelli the Prince, winning is a matter of strength, shrewdness, and clever deception.

The Prince is Back + Technical Note

Machiavelli:The Prince is another one of those classic games that you can lose hours to just telling yourself: just one more turn. Figuring out the best trade routes, exploring and making the most profit is good fun, but the game gets its next level status from the fact you're competing with your AI opponents (or human, if you happen to be playing in person or put yourself through the torture of sending save files back and forth over email like it was the mid-90s again) in multiple arenas. Besides amassing a fortune via trade, you're also making waves back in Rome by trying to become the Doge or even Pope. Each of these positions give you the opportunity to wield an army by calling a crusade or naming yourself General or Admiral, line your pockets by raising your salary as Doge or increase the cardinal indulgence rate as Pope, or harass your enemies by attempting to hang their Senators if you appoint yourself Councilhead. If you are a fan of underhanded tactics, you can also visit the Den of Iniquity and hire arsons or assassins to hinder your foes, or induldge in a bit of good old fashioned slander (the slander.lie file is fully editable so you can insert your own insults if you are so inclined). All in all, great game. On a technical note: when I first purchased the game, I was having an issue where I was hearing the music just fine, but sound effects were not coming through. A poster on the forums named Platov came up with a solution that I wanted to post here in order to give it more visibility. "It was an error in the Dosbox configuration file for the game. The dosbox_fs.conf file make Dosbox emulates a Soundblaster Pro but the game don't detect it because it is an incompatible sound card. On the sbtype line, you must change sbpro for sb16. Like this: BEFORE #sbtype=sb16 sbtype=sbpro AFTER #sbtype=sb16 sbtype=sb16 And there it is! The digital sounds work like a charm. I hope this can help if anyone has the same problem like me."

THANK YOU GODS!!!

I still have a orginal copy of this with working floppy discs and all the manuals. IF it was not for this game I would not have learned so much history and fell in love with this genre of games. This version runs so smooth and looks nice but keeps the feel too. To have this on gog is been one of my biggest wants for a long time. THANK YOU!

Glad to finally see it on GOG, but...

I am really glad to see this game finally available on GOG. I already own a couple of big-box copies from back in the day, but when I saw it appeared on GOG via Ziggurat, I bought it immediately! It's an all-time classic that ties in with some other games published by MicroProse (in various and ways), such as Darklands and Sword of the Samurai. It's a follow-on to the Merchant Prince and Merchant Prince II, all three developed by HDI. I'm actually rather puzzled why this game, Machiavelli the Prince, or either of its Merchant Prince predecessors, haven't appeared on either GOG or Steam previously. They're all great games that should be played by anyone who loves either history or trade/diplomacy/management games. Hopefully the MP1+2 games will show up soon as well! The only reason I gave this installment only 4-stars instead of 5 was because this GOG edition is missing any documentation. A major oversight, in my estimation. It seems rather odd, since they're readily available online from various warez sites across the interWeb!

FINALLY!!!

This is the game I originally got GOG for and have been waiting so long for. Even with a few endgame bugs still not patched about 26 years after release it is such an amazing game. The best trading game I have ever played. This made my year, 2020 isn't that bad anymore. If they can just clear out those bugs (One concerning slander file not found) it will again be a game I put hundreds upon hundreds of hours. The game should get 6 stars, but the bugs put it down to five. :D

One of my DOS favourites

Honestly, this econimic/trading sim is just so much fun (plus it's so much more than just a trading sim if you dive deeper and learn all the underlying mechanics, like popularity, elections or military/mercenaries). I loved to play a quick, relaxing 15 turns game every once in a while, and now thanks to the GOG release it's so much easier. One oversight though - the GOG version comes with no manuals or documentation, which explains some of the aforementioned mechanics. Fortunately it's easy enough to find a PDF online.
