A mix of some of the best cRPGs

I bought this on a RPG-hunger spree without really doing my homework. I expected it to be a kind of turn based strategy game like Original Sin but I was surprised to find it's actually a combination of the old D&D RPGs like Eye of the Beholder and map-based enemies similar to Heroes of Might & Magic. The game is situated on the "map" - a world to explore, find loot, etc. but unlike games like Baldur's Gate, enemies do not walk about but are represented by static images (HoM&M) who you can decide to fight or avoid. There's also random encounters (think Final Fantasy) where you can fight or flee as well. When it comes to combat, you're represented with enemies in the front or back. Front enemies you can attack with melee weapons, back enemies you can reach using ranged weapons and magic. Your own party has the same system - the vulnerable members you put in the back, the well armored ones you put in the front. It may be old-school but it works very well and since you can move your members during combat, it's delightfully tactical. The game heavily relies on a food system which diminishes - if you rest a lot, your food supplies drop even faster. Finding food or buying from a vendor lets you head out for longer periods of time. I'm never a big fan of such time-limiting elements since it only offers a nuisance. Yes, it means you have to ration food, limit how often you rest but the game is hard enough with a fully rested party to make food perhaps a bit too much trouble. Another weak point is the dialogue/story. The voices are not horrible, they just detract more than add to the game. The dialogue itself is pretty limited and shallow. There aren't even many side quests and only a few people to talk to. Consider this side of the game "bare-bones". It's similar to Diablo II's approach, in a way. All in all, the combat is definitely the high point of the game. Exploring is enjoyable as well and even though the story is rather weak, the game is still loads of fun.

Party on

Lords of Xulima (pronounced shoo'-lee-ma, I think) is an excellent game with it's own distinctive take on classic RPG's, with an updated feel. If you are in the right mood for exploring this vast land, you will be rewarded with fantasy fare drawn in bright and detailed environments. The developers have hit a sweet spot in making the game challenging, yet easy to understand and navigate. Though I referred to the manual and play guide a little, the game mostly explains itself. The story behind the game may be standard fantasy, but it is very well-written and fleshed-out. There is plenty of immersion in the plot, the world, and the characters, even if the game isn't strongly narrative-driven. The developers clearly cared about the story as much as the game mechanics. There are many other good points, such as the puzzles, riddles, and the challenge of managing your resources carefully (the Talisman of Golot DLC helps out in the last regard, one good point of the deluxe edition). The game pays off for exploring the land carefully and being a bit obsessive-compulsive, while also offering thoughtful tactical challenges in battles. As Abraham Lincoln said, "People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like."

Breathtaking possibilities of developing

@kmkenpo: Give this a try: Please check the games resolution - I tested the high resolution of 2715x1527 and sudddenly my mouse didn't work properly - I just couldn't move. Setting it back to 1920x1080 just solved my problems, Maybe, that fixes your probs, too. I found Lords of Xulima on my regular gog.check. And I bought it, only to fill the 2 or 3 days, waiting for the release of Blackguards 2. When it was released, I played Blackguards 2 just for an hour - and switched back to LoX. I am a RPG-Fan since Dungeon Master. And I love turn-based RPGs. Since I bought LoX, it has obsessed me completely. So I have to admit: The developers added many fresh, interesting, attractive and exciting new ideas to this genre. The sheer numbers of skills and spells is breath-taking. The possibilities to develop your party's characters is amazing. I truly can recommend Lords of Xulima to all fans of turn-based RPGs,

Kind Of Plain

Lords of Xulima is definitely not the most complex game I've ever played. Graphics are decent, voiceovers are somewhat passable, the story was just interesting enough to make me want to finish the game but the quests were really nothing special. I mean, after playing this game I wasn't like "Man, that was a great game.", I was more like "Well, finished that one. What's next?". I don't like any game where you have to keep purchasing food for your journey. I had no problem keeping my food supply maxed out in this game, I just think it's unnecessary and adds nothing to the game. I didn't like the switches in the dungeons which open secret doors. They aren't hard to find but the dungeons are, in my opinion, riddled with them to the point it's like "Oh, another secret door." instead of "Oh man, I just found a secret door!". Even with the mediocre points, there were still aspects of this game I did like. I did like the turn-based combat like older RPGs and I did like exploring the land. I also liked not having to face a random combat encounter every five steps. I think the devs spaced random combat encounters out very well. I also liked the ending. Not a spectacular ending but had a little twist I wasn't expecting. I guess this was just a good time killer for me. I watched LoX gameplay on YouTube and it looked like a game I would really like. Since GoG had it on sale, I figured I wouldn't be out too much if I didn't like it. Well, even though I think it's kind of plain, I don't regret purchasing it for the price I paid. As with my other reviews, just because I thought it was a three star game doesn't mean you will. You may love it or you may hate it, My review is only a review, an opinion.

Solid Throwback RPG with a few bugs

Good, solid old style RPG with Wizardry-ish combat (change interface, show ranks of bad guys and your team has a front and a back, like 17th century European line warfare). Lots of herbs, lots of grinding for food and to raise money. Decent leveling and skills, but not enough balance in finding items of increasing usefulness. Save and load games absurdly slow on Mac OSX version. We've played dozens of hours and have not yet scratched the surface. Not everyone will like it, but if you want something pretty straight forward and don't mind an RPG with an early 1990s feel, this is a good game.
