Grow dynasties of medieval families and see them evolve and interact as you build their homes, farms and workshops and assign them different tasks, duties and taxes.
Lords and Villeins is a new lighthearted city-building strategy simulation of medieval society where you shape the dynasty of the ruling family. In this game, you don't manage the daily life of every villager; instead, you deal with whole families and their descendants.
Players manage peasant and noble families, expand production chain, work with the church, train an army for the king and influence the daily lives of villagers while making important decisions and engaging with the fantasy of being a ruler.
At the heart of its design is an emotional journey - seeing your villagers grow, evolve, create relationships, go through struggles and challenges to shape their lives and stories in interesting ways.
70+ objects at your disposal to build, decorate and improve your settlement
Nearly 20 different zones and professions that can be performed by the villagers for the player to manage
90+ resources to be used in a fully functional production chain
Unique family-management perspective where the player negotiates with groups of villagers through the head of their family
Fully simulated procedurally generated environment with a complex AI that can create relationships and develop character traits
Various domesticated animals your villagers can tame, feed and take care of.
An immersive world where you are a part of the bigger picture. Collect taxes from your villagers to secure reserves, maintain balance and make your duties to pay the royal tax imposed on your land.
Visually distinct seasons with soundtrack deigned around seasonal themes, in future updates also expanded with simulations of weather conditions, temperatures and soil quality.
Graphics are nice, cute and pixely without sacrificing detail.
Music is good, some of the sound effects are a bit odd but not a huge concern.
It can be confusing as to which of the dozens of production buildings do what and who needs which ones, but recent patches have been addressing this.
The biggest in early access right now is that the economy/supply chain is incomplete; most of the professions are on a ticking clock to starvation as the things they produce are only needed in very limited quantities, if they have a purpose at all, and unless a profession produces food they have no ability to feed themselves aside from buying it.
I've heard a lot of bad things about this game despite it being "early access". I played through the tutorial until it came to "building a silo on the farm zone". I had over 50 clay and yet they refused to build the silo. Peasants, or Villeins as they're called here, refused to do their jobs or build it. Meanwhile it took so long people started starving, I couldn't progress to other areas of the tutorial like "how to make food / meals" and other important processes. The tutorial bounces around instead of focusing on what is most important to begin with.
They teach you about zones, warehouse and other things foremost but after that it just sort of doesn't make sense. Oh winter is coming build roofs on your homes. It was still spring time. Oh make sure you have firewood to not freeze but it's still springtime. I need to know how to make meals and make food for my people not worry about later game items. Building the silo took so long, and still didn't work, that people were starving. My people were giving birth and the silo still wouldn't be built so I could progress farther along in the story.
The game is a disaster with many bugs and bad AI right now. The tutorial needs to be re-written to make more sense for newer players. Teach people how to make food / meals. Stop bouncing around to random things going from zones, to make a wall, to upgrade this zone (put items in it), to make a roof, to other things when there needs to be a set guideline to help learn what's most important to keep your people ALIVE and NOT starving. Sure you can grant meals from your warehouse but what happens when you run out of meals to grant and you don't know how to make more meals because the tutorial is bugged and won't complete due to the AI not completing tasks?
Overall this is probably one of my biggest disappointments in gaming I've ever had. I enjoy medieval and fantasy games but you're better off purchasing RimWorld, all the DLC and modding it. This game needs a lot of work still.
Yes it is a simulation game, but I akin more to it being a programing game. Alot of commands that you put on the residents, grouping them into systems, giving permissions of allocation of resources. I mean you could say the same thing about being a king, but that's just how it feels to me.
But hey, know's what it is, isn't buggy, and everything is layed out. I do wish the tutorial was a bit more intuitive, it's a bit of "do this" kinda feel.
But hey, if you really like dwarf fortress and want a sim that's a tad easier, go for it.
Getting really sick and tired of GOG adding underachieving games to my "watchlist" without my knowledge or consent. It's incredibly annoying when all other notifications for different software is turned off on my PC, yet GOG manages to bypass notification settings and gives me Pop-ups at the worst times possible.
GOG, you're sketch, you have "new" sub-par games and ancient games that're wayyy overpriced for what they are.
Giving this game 3 stars even though I've never played. Came here to rant because GOG's "customer service" is non-existent(NEVER REPLY VIA EMAIL). Hoping one of these comments gets reported and someone at GOG has enough common sense to read this comment and send the concerns to the appropriate department and, MAYBE, FINALLY get a response VIA email.
