Description
ATARI PRESENTS is a series of titles geared toward the preservation of cult classics, forgotten favorites, and titles that would otherwise be lost to time. In the spirit of that, each ATARI PRESENTS title is presented unchanged from its original version other than providing the means to play them on modern hardware. Even the store description below is the very same language used to describe the title at the time of its release. Please enjoy!
You're the only human in a huge, robotic space ship, flying at incredible speeds through deep space. Your mission: find and settle a new planet where humanity can thrive. Combat is inevitable, but you'll need more than flying skills to succeed. You'll also need resourcefulness, charm and political skill to help you negotiate with the bizarre, intelligent - sometimes hostile - beings who correctly see you as the alien.
3D Combat Flight Simulation Like You've Never Seen Earth-bound simulations spend most of their graphic power on landmarks and other terrain. But since there's no terrain in the black void of out space, Lightspeed devotes its Super 3D Graphics power to showing space ships in breathtaking detail and animating them with unprecedented smoothness.
- Pilot a starship 15,000 feet long
- Customize your ship for the performance you need
- Control remote fightercraft in strategic battles with intelligent enemies
Fascinating Role-Playing Depth
Multiple star clusters await your exploration, each with unique challenges. A dozen solar systems spin through each cluster; scores of planets revolve around each sun. Most important, 25 species of aliens require your constant attention.
- The Broodsmasters - sinister, manipulative and eager for universal domination
- The Lutin - quasi-intelligent, with no memory and no concept of the future
- The Cicisbeo - totally self-absorbed, vain and arrogant
Hyperspeed was the update of this game, and contains the two campaigns of Lightspeed plus two more.
It's also available on GOG, (and cheaper when I write this review).
Otherwise the game was really good for its time, and it didn't age too badly.
So, this is an older game, so of course its graphics are outdated. That being said, there is an awful lot to love about this game. The world-building is deep and rich and has meaningful applications to your game experience. It has mystery, suspense, drama, humor, and heart.
In many ways, the world it has created often reminds me of Star Control II, with many different alien races, each with their own guiding psychological traits.
The game provides several different scenarios, with different alien species interacting in a variety of ways. Exploration is crucial. Make alliances, trade with friendly species, break up evil empires (or join them), stop world-ravaging aliens (or become their accomplices). You can be a benevolent hero or you could choose to dominate the star sector with an iron fist. There's more than one way to achieve your ultimate objective of finding a new world for the human race, but keep in mind that your methods matter, and humanity will have to live with the results of your actions. So, you can still win the game temporarily only to set up humanity for its doom.
The combat is moderately paced. Each alien species has a very different approach to battle. Some have heavy shields and are only vulnerable in very small target areas. One race has ships that are essentially giant chainsaws that rely on melee combat. Another race is a time traveler that adds ships to the battle by traveling through time, and taking out "older" iterations of the ships also eliminates the younger iterations. One species has a powerful telepathic influence that won't allow you to attack them unless they want you to.
In summary, this is an excellent game, and I'm happy to recommend it to you.
I enjoyed this game so much. The only thing that could be better, would be if gog would include the other manuals. The included manual does not mention the key bindings, and the game does not have a key binding. I found a youtube unboxing video which included the other documents and will try to submit them to GoG Support
