Killing time? Try spending it wisely

I'd like to start off by saying that the main screen had flickering to the point where it was difficult to actually navigate. The flickering was not as bad during actual gameplay but it was still present. The good The actual gameplay isn't too bad. There seem to be a nice variety of guns as well as enemies. The graphics are also pretty good as well as being deliciously retro. I did find myself wanting to play longer than I initially thought before the bad started to hamper my experience. The bad The control is something special. If you try to set the controls to something more contemporary (W & S are forward/back, A & D are strafe left/right) you will find yourself unable to aim while strafing. You can only aim while at a standstill. Additionally, I found myself getting caught up on walls and objects in the environment quite a bit. Moving around felt awkward and frustrating. You will find yourself taking damage from simply being unable to respond to enemies that suddenly appear. Also the jump is so quick that just pressing the button normally results in doing a rapid bunny hop. The awkward controls eventually just wore me down. I wouldn't really recommend it. There's plenty of other old-school shooters you can choose from. You could try Doom, Blood, or Rise of the Triad if you need your old-school shooter fix.

Great Classic 3DO Game

INSTA-BUY, If you did not know, you cannot get this game anywhere else and if you did like the 3DO console version of this game, you will fall in love with the PC version. The PC version has almost nothing in common with its 3DO console counter-part. The PC game is better in every aspect. I have put 2 hours of gameplay into the campaign already and have not experienced any problems. I would like to suggest that you use a pc controller application to map the keys to a controller. I love this game and have played both the 3DO console version and the PC version and would never play the console version again, its that awesome. Thanks GOG!!!

Engrossing and stylish, if flawed game

I had never played this before, either the PC version of the 3DO one, but I liked it. It's an interesting attempt to do something different and unique in the FPS genre, unfortunately held back a bit by slightly clunky mechanics. Positives: Very engrossing for a 90's shooter. The whole game is one giant map, allowing you to play different areas in different orders and really pulling you in in a way games with a more traditional level structure don't. There's actually a plot and the cut scenes are actually in game and activated by standing in specific spots. You can watch or ignore as you like and it won't pull you out of the game like cut scenes usually do. And the acting is actually O.K. if a little corny at times. There's a wide variety of enemies and where they are makes sense. Zombie hunters wander the forests, devil maids are inside the mansion, chefs are in the kitchens and dining room etc. Each area has a unique look and feel to it. You're not just wandering through identical corridors, they feel as much like real places as anywhere in a 90's FPS really can. The music is really good too, with the track changing when you enter a new area. Negatives: 90's clunkyness. You get stuck on walls easily and have to use mouse move if you want a WASD setup, meaning you can't move the mouse while strafing or look up and down with it. And while the open world is cool, it also means there's likely going to be some backtracking as you get keys. And while there's a lot of enemy types, there's not that much difference in terms of what they do and how you kill them, mostly fairly small differences in strength and speed. And while I never had any issues running or playing the game, sometimes the music would cut out if there was a lot of shooting and noise and I'd have to leave and re-enter the area to start it up again. Very annoying. I'd recommend this if you want a cool and unique take on the FPS genre with engrossing atmosphere, and don't mind the flaws of early FPS games.

Flawed, but deep

Pros: -The game is surprisingly long and deep, a kind of an open-world fps -The combat is fun -Has sense of humour -The soundtrack is nice Cons: -The controls with keyboard and mouse are awkward and the jump is almost useless -The character gets stuck on walls and corners all the time -The frequent mazes and backtracking give headaches -The videos inside the game are useless, blurred and boring Overall, it's a hard, but a surprisingly addicting game.

Intriguing, but flawed

So what do you need to know. This is an FPS, thats over 20 years old. It wasnt designed for the PC, meaning, the controls here are quite bad. If you are like me and missed the old console era of games and have no feel for it, you will have a hard time both fighting the enemies and, whats a lot more problematic, navigating the place. I played this for an hour, but there were so many times I was confused as to where I am when navigating corridors or being in rooms. Plus the ingame map isnt much help either. Whoever says the controls are like old school shooters is lying as they are clearly worse here. What I did enjoy is that you do not need to reload weapons and just use the total ammo you have. The atmosphere is nice, the soundtrack is good, the graphics are as alright as they can be for a game this old, it has an interesting story/plot. Story is told through ghosts that say "shoot me"(?), need to wait until they start showing small cutscenes. I would have liked to gone through this and get all the details, it seems quite rich in atmosphere, but this would have taken me a lot more than I would have found entertaining at this stage of my life. Maybe someone who has a lot more time, a lot more appreciation, a lot more skill in there type of games than I would like it a lot more, but I would rather try something else.
