Superior space flight combat sim

Posted on 2010-05-25 10:42:18 byLongTailGamer's avatarLongTailGamer:

I-War broke group in the space combat genre by bringing Newtonian physics into the fold. This is no skinned-over WWII dogfight in space -- oh, no. Mass and inertia rule the day in a dreadnought. This gives I-War a little higher learning curve than Wing Commander or Elite, but it pays off.
I-War offers up some of the most satisfying space combat since TIE Fighter. Engagementsread more are intricate dances of sweeping arcs and precise weapons fire. This game will test not only your piloting and reflexes, but also your sniper's instinct. There's nothing like the exhilarating satisfaction of navigating a complex trajectory to land a perfect shot on your enemy's soft underbelly.
The game has its flaws: unforgiving mission challenges, terrible voice acting in spots, and yes, flying a dreadnought takes more practice than the game seems to want to give you at first.
Once you master the physics of mass and inertia, though, you can dance through I-War's dogfights like a ballerina with a rail gun. I-War delivers a solid futuristic battle experience.

Exceptional Capital Ship Space Combat

Posted on 2010-05-25 13:15:13 byVeloxi's avatarVeloxi:

This is an exceptional flight sim. Unlike many space sims that came before it, in I-War, you're flying a larger capital ship, like a frigate, rather than a small, nimble fighter. This, along with the inclusion of a fully Newtonian-based flight model and four separate but completely necessary stations to switch between during missions makes this one of the more complex space simsread more you'll find. You definitely need a joystick with this one, and one with a hat-switch to boot.
If you're ready to take it on, though, you'll be granted one of the most satisfying space sim experiences around, with an excellent story, wonderful missions, exceptional combat, and, in my opinion, the best opening cinematic in any game, bar none.
Overall, if you have any interest in space combat, and own -- or are thinking of getting a joystick -- then NOT getting I-War would be a disservice. Heck, I own it on disk and I'm buying the GoG version. Enjoy!

It well deserves a place in GOG!!

My first review, ever.
But I can't let this pass without saying a word or two about this fantastic, largely unknown and underrated masterpiece.
Yes, yes, you can compare IWar to newer, shiny graphics, open-ended, sandboxed, multi-playable shipped and wathevered games and find this one a bit limited with its only playable ship, old (but still enjoyable) grahpics and mission-basedread more gamesystem (even if you actually HAVE more endings, dependingon your in-mission chioces!!!).
But don't let those elements turn you down. This is a masterpiece, bar none. If you liked space sims the like of freespace, playing a little figher or bomber in a war that is too big for you (wonderful game again!!), here you really have the feeling of the power coming from a larger ship. Without a large choice of weapons, your fligh style and ability really matters in winning a fight. Withouth the maneuvrability of a fighter, your tactical skills and sense of anticipation can really save your day.
And with the well implemented four-stations control system, you really have the control of it all.
With wonderful missions, interesting backstory, no-return ethical choices and a climax ending, the main campaign is really a gem. I never played through the entire "Defiance" add-on (I had a bug in a mession...) but it is a worthy addition and I'll for sure give it a new try.
Oh, and yes... the opening cinematic is wonderful.
