Richly imagined story/adventure game
A fun game that blends an interactive novel with the better elements of an old-school point-and-click adventure (minus the sadism!). The universe is well developed and well thought-out; there are a bunch of neat incidental details to discover if you know enough real history to pick up on all the little ways this history is different. If anything, the backstory is overdeveloped relative to the demands of a 4-6 hour game (not a criticism), and there's definitely room to tell more stories here (hint hint). After you finish playing through once, you'll probably want to go back to see what happens if you make different choices. You can't create checkpoint saves though (no savescumming), so this can get a bit tedious if you want to explore all the permutations. You do at least have the option to begin each subsequent playthrough from the start of any of the 4 "books," and you can speed-click through any dialog/cut scenes that you've seen before. I bought books 1 and 2 several years ago and was disappointed at the time to discover that 3 and 4 were stuck in development hell. I'd given up hoping they'd ever be released, and it was a pleasant surprise last week to get a random notification that they were finally available. Kudos to the whole team!
