Description
Build your fleet, trade, explore and conquer
Helium Rain is a single-player space simulation that places you at the helm of a spacefaring company. Trade resources, buy ships and stations to fulfill contracts ! Dock at stations to buy and sell your wares or upgrade your ship, upgrade your technology to be more efficient and militarize your fleet to prevent piracy.

You will need to master both real-time action and long-term strategy: destroying a freighter has a direct impact on the economy, while declaring war will make your spaceflight environment slightly more hostile...

  • 13 playable ships with weapon and engine upgrades
Build and fly fleets of fighters, bombers, cargos, corvettes or capital ships. Buy new engines and weapons.
  • Fast-paced combat with Newtonian flight, localized damage and joystick support
There is no speed limit in Helium Rain. You can fly at half a mile a second while aiming backwards. Aim for critical systems in order to disable ships, kill their crew or capture targets, and don't fly into asteroids.
  • Complex economy model
Take advantage of a complex simulation of space trade to be the most competitive company.
  • A planetary system to explore
Explore around 25 sectors orbiting the gas giant Nema and its moons.
  • Procedural contracts, world exploration, technology upgrades
Pick contracts and build your empire to become the largest company.
  • Quick-action skirmish mode
Setup your fleet, pick an opponent and go into fighting action right away !

A world that feels real
Your ships have generators, radiators, weapons, engines, cargo bays or life support systems - they all work together. Every thruster on your ship plays a role. Aim for engines to pin down your enemies, or send them spinning around by destroying power stations. Most ships have more than thirty individual parts ! You can customize the most important parts of your ships - your main engines, attitude control thrusters, weapons and hull colors.

Your competitors are independent factions, companies with the same goal as yours - ruling the system. They will try to undercut you, or even attack you if you become a threat to them. But don't be too quick to destroy them, as war can break the supply of resources you depend on ! Attacking freighters will destroy resources, with the potential to cause an economic crisis.

Relaxing

Overall, a very relaxing experience. If you are looking for a hard-core space sim, this is not it. It's easy-going, with a very simple control scheme and straightforward flying. However, its graphics more than make up for this, as it is just a joy to fly around and enjoy the vistas. There is a very solid economy simulation running in the background. It's seemingly simple, but if you care to delve behind the front window, you'll find detailed production lines and the ability to greatly influence it, without messing it up, if you have the resources and inclination to do it. However, earning credits is not that challenging and there's not a whole lot to do with those in the early game. Right away, you can start buying ships and building an automated fleet that will earn money for you. After a while, you can start building your own stations, which will turn you a bigger profit, or assist you in other tasks, like research. Progress in the game is partly blocked behind a simple research game. Essentially, you just earn Research points by exploring, and then you spend them right away to improve your ships, be able to construct different types of stations, or just outright gain new options and abilities for flying. There's a small variety of ships, but it's decent enough. They all are good at one particular role, so while there's not a lot of variety, what you get doesn't feel too weak or too OP. It's good to do the job you want with it. One major drawback is the very limited map size. After a while, there's not really a whole lot to see. There's around 20 sectors to travel around in, and most of them don't really look that different from each other. However, in the little time I've had with this game, I found myself enjoying it. It's calming, it's easy-going, it's something to do to pass the time and have fun while doing it.

Like old Elite, without instant pirates

Got a stressful day? Get this little gem. My only hint: Get a docking computer, they are cheap. You are not hunted, the tutorial is well made and does not push you to do instantly what the tutorial says, you can safely ignore it until you feel the next step has to be done. Just trade along, get a bigger ship, get money with passengers and so on. I didn't have a fight yet, but I just played for about 5 hours for now. Ship control is good, the general usability of the game is good as well. No crash either, works in 8k too. Nearly nothing to complain about, which is rare for a player from south-west Germany. My complain? More Anti-Alias options, but you can override that with nvidia inspector or the control panel. That is all.

Addictive, fascinating... but then what?

This is one of those "just this last deal and then I stop -- next thing it's 3 a.m."-games. I'm 55hrs or so into the first match, and by far the topmost company in play. Tutorial is streamlined and somewhat boring, but effective: in a couple of hours of gameplay you should be able to do whatever you need, or figure out how to do what you don't know. As someone here suggested, buy a docking computer as soon as you can afford one: docking is not as difficult as someone else here stated, but tricky enough anyway. Trading is dull: buy whatever you can, sell wherever you can - there's always a good margin, even without a specific contract (when there is one, take it and you will double or triple your income). As a matter of facts, stay away from combat long enough (bribe the pirates, if you need), build a research station as soon as you can, be quick to set up a complex and a factory for electronic components (critical!) and you will be able to build your own private shipyard in a whiff. Once you have one, the rest is a piece of cake: the main storyline will become easy to complete and you'll find yourself with a unparalleled economic and military empire. Problem is: this is where I stand, 55hrs or so into the game: and now what? That's life, babe: you grow big, and then you grow huge, and then you become the biggest, the wealthiest and the mightiest of them all... and then nothing is very much meaningful anymore. No new places to go, no more artifacts to look for, no exciting deal to close, no scientific advancement to exploit, no more enemies to annihilate. All is dark, and quiet, and silent... It's hard to be God.

A simplified x-clone.

I like the idea of a simplified x game, less menus, less mouse clicks, however as a sandbox it shows quickly many limits. The main staple is trading, building ships and stations, but the economy has many bottlenecks and may grind to a halt (factions go bankrupt and shipyards stop). Newtonian flight is very nice but fighters have no chance agains bigger ships, and bigger ships are extremely heavy. Flying has no interest, stations are quite close one to the other and all the systems look all the same. The sky is velvet black, which is nice, but stars are square pixels. Diplomacy is interesting until you discover you have two states: peace and war. No allies to help you in a fight. The mission system adapts to your ship: fly a cargo you'll have transport missions, fly a fighter you'll have combat missions. The tutorial is well done and consists in a series of missions. Sadly there is no story, the "main" mission ends pretty soon. The research system is a nice addition, even if it is only used to slow down the progress of the game, but the ship upgrade system is non existent. Every ship gets exactly the same upgrades, for the same price. I personally don't like the ships, they are formed from cylinders and spheres, you can't tell the front from the back, but most importantly they lack any Sci-Fi feeling. Stations have even simpler forms and are smaller than a middle sized ship. Ship UI is the same for all the ships and it is abysmally ugly, which diminisces enormously the pleasure of flying. This game has the merit of existing though. 3/5, +1 because it is an indie game

Incredible game

Got hooked on it already on the tutorial. Really simple gaming and you can play it in your own pace. The game will not force you into anything. It's a very complex game if you want to master every concept of it. However, if you don't feel like going hardcore on it, you can simply pick up your ship and enjoy the views around Nema and fly it your own way using really satisfying flight dynamics. Great game. Worth the price.
