Return to the unforgiving world of Hard West for an adventure in the Civil War Texas. Libertee is an escaped slave-turned-vigilante, enhanced without her consent with superhuman capabilities by one Doctor Gorman. Hungry for answers, and for revenge, she tracks down the mad surgeon, but his motivations turn out to be the opposite of what she had anticipated. As she makes up her mind about the doctor’s fate, the two will have to face an even more powerful enemy.

Really enjoyed the new story and missions. Same gameplay with a twist on the card perks, now being body part replacement for similar perks as the cards.
Well worth the cost since it adds another 5+ hours to the game.
First It should be noted that this is a self contained story. Anything innovative they added is restricted to this one story. The renamed card system combined with a new resource and the possibility of making companions should've been enough to warrant a 5 star rating. But the story is too small to enjoy their work. It is also lacking aspects I liked from the base game like the fate trader and gameplay modifiers. If you preferred to play with a specific loadout of weapons you unlocked and/or luck regen then too bad. If you prefer to disable the ai only overwatch because it was an unfair advantage then you aren't going to be happy.
The story itself doesn't entirely work. At a couple point the timeline leaps back to an earlier point resulting in inconsistencies in your gear that make no sense and is, in one case unfair difficulty as you lack useful gear and cards you'd already earned and don't even have enough guns to fully equip your characters.
Additions like the ability to make companions using your cards sounded great but by the time you could theoretically do it you'll have a full party, so must either kill off party members or go without and parts are quite expensive so you'd struggle to fully equip party members either way.
I really like this game but the flaws of this scenario are too strong to justify buying seperatly.

Scars of Freedom is a horror-themed expansion to Hard West, and skills are granted by the use of implanted organs rather than cards as in the main game. The mechanics work similarly, though, so players will not have any problems transitioning. I had as much fun with this expansion as I did with the main game.
I beat this entire DLC and I believe it is worse than the main game.
Here are the reasons why, which I have divided into numbered points:
1. The devil narrator character from the main game, the one who is constantly providing voice-over narration, and who did an excellent job at that, he is totally absent from this DLC.
2. Instead, voice-over narration is now provided by two new voice actors: one for the main character you play as in the DLC, a slave woman named Libertee, and the other by a character named Dr. Gorman.
Although the Dr. Gorman voice actor did a great job, I felt the Libertee voice actress did a horrible job. To me, her performance comes across like an amateur voice actress trying to imitate an American Southern accent, but not having the skill to do so authentically.
Therefore, the Libertee voice actress destroyed my immersion in the game because her voice performance is not believable.
3. In the main game, you have a Fate Trader shop, which allows you to buy the good unique weapons and talismans that you unlocked by accomplishing tasks within the main game's scenarios.
However, in this DLC, the Fate Trader shop is totally absent. Therefore, you have no ability to buy any of the good - and fun - unique weapons that are present in the main game.
This means that while playing the DLC, your characters are mostly stuck using crappy standard weapons, like the normal shotgun, which makes them weak and also not-fun to use.
Likewise, you also can't buy the great talismans from the main game, like the candle of the dead which greatly improves your characters' aim.
4. This DLC has you alternate between two different posses at various points, with many characters in each one, but it doesn't have enough missions for you to unlock all the cards.
So, your characters in the DLC will also be gimpy because you will only have a few cards unlocked, but you have to spread them around to many different characters, with not enough cards to go around.
