I came to this game with a lot of experience from Civilization, Space Empires, and the Twilight Imperium Tabletop game.
Whether it is the obfuscation of the tutorial, unclear information regarding resources, the fact that boundaries don't really seem to matter, which makes expansion kinda iffy, and the overly complex mechanisms of settling planets, I just couldn't break into it.

There are some nice visuals, and there is definitely something here that will appeal to some folks. But I just found the same experience could be found elsewhere in other games.
After reading multiple reviews on the game, I feel it necessary to write a short one myself.
This is a 4X/Grand Strategy game by mechanics alone however, it is NOT that involved! This game is absolutely entry level to the genre. The game is like playing with Lincoln Logs while everyone else has a bucket of 1000 Lego pieces. That however, does not mean this game isn't fun or, worth a small investment to check out for you or, buy to get your kids or SO into the strategy genre. I have read reviews with people trying to compare this game to something like Civilazation 6 which is wholly unfair! This game is a relaxed strategy game that one plays while binging a favorite TV show. Do yourself a favor and, give the core game a shot and, if you enjoy the relaxed, laid back feel then, keep it or, keep it and grab the DLCs and, well...if you don't like it, GOG has a very simply return policy with minimum questions asked so, return it, get your money back and, save $100 or more to buy Civ 7 with all the expansions if that's what you're in to. I simply can not stress this point enough, it is ABSOLUTELY ENTRY LEVEL and, very much for the feint of heart! Do your inner child a favor and, check out this game.
Due to their complexity, potential or scope, some games require DLCs and expansions to develop their full potential: Age of Empires, Combat Mission, Crusader Kings III, Europa Universalis IV, Field of Glory, Sengoku Dynasty, Stellaris, X4, Xenonauts … That makes them more expensive, but one receives a lot more content and updates, keeping the product fresh and interesting for longer.
Whether that is worth the price is something anyone can judge for themselves, which is why the absolute number on the sticker is not the smartest criterium for the evaluation of an entertainment product. The aformentioned titles provide challenges for hundreds of hours, whereas many cheaper products last a dozen hours tops. The ratio of money paid for hours of fun is therefore often more favourable when investing a little more upfront.
What people need to make an educated judgement is a brief summary of the context and story, mechanics, technical bugs or logical flaws, handling and so on, so they are in a better position to evaluate whether a particular title may be their cup of tea, whereas merely whining about the cost is not really telling anyone anything.
If the type of game and the way GC III is being played is something that someone usually enjoys, than it is a good game in this genre, as long as you get the add-ons, DLCs and expansions as well. In mid-October 2025, the 'ultimate' edition that includes everything was on sale for 12 bucks — a fair price for the labour and time that went into its development, especially when taking reviews from professional critics (see «Top Critics» above or visit some game magazines' sites) into consideration as well.
It is always a bit more expensive to have sophisticated taste — if you think you deserve a little treat from time to time, you could do worse than getting this one.
