Wonderful Puzzler!

Filament is a wonderful puzzle game with a unique core gameplay and a great sense of polish built around it. Once the game introduces you to its concept of connecting pegs without being able to cross existing connections, it immediately opens up and lets you freely explore the ship to poke and prod at the large amount of puzzles. The tremendous amount of variations on its mechanics ensure the game does not feel boring, and although you can pretty quickly run into some devious puzzles that feel insurmountable at first, the open-ended structure helps keep frustration low - just go test your wits somewhere else. In addition to the puzzles that are immediately accessed, there are others you find by exploring the environment and that engage you in a different, less immediate way. I love having that sort of structure in a puzzle game, and combined with its core mechanics, Filament reminds me quite a bit of The Witness. However, it doesn't feel derivative at all and confidently stands on its own - especially considering how its storytelling is a lot less abstract and therefore (at least for my taste) more interesting. It's honestly one of the best puzzle games I've played in a while, and if you enjoy the genre and in particular titles like The Witness or Fidel Dungeon Rescue, grabbing Filament should be a no-brainer - you'll definitely enjoy what's on offer here as well!

A great, rewarding and relaxing game

In its core, Filament is a puzzler where you have to connect pillars with a glowing string in order to open a door that lets you exit the level. As simple as this mechanic sounds at first, the puzzles are just downright fantastic. The first few puzzles will explain the gameplay mechanic but they are getting challenging fast. I easily spent half an hour on some levels and simply couldn't figure out how to solve it. But then it just clicked and I felt like the smartest person in the room. Although all puzzles are based around the string mechanics, it never gets boring or repetitive as you will encounter different kinds of pillars to activate. Sometimes you have to match colours, sometimes you cannot touch certain elements, sometimes you have to touch pillars multiple times or deactivate barriers. So if you are a little bit into puzzle games and if you enjoy being challenged by a game, stop reading and buy this game. The puzzles alone would justify the price of that game. However, the game also features a nice backstory. You can pretty much roam freely through the ship from the beginning. You will find little clues and information about what happened to the crew and with every solved set of puzzles you gain access to some emails of a crew member. That also mean that you don't have to solve the puzzles in a given order. Instead, you can just do another one if you are stuck. Or you just relax and explore the ship. I also like the art style and the soundtrack is incredibly soothing and doesn't distract you at all. The voice-overs and comments from Juniper are also very entertaining. All in all, this will be my puzzle game of the year and I can't emphasise enough that it is highly recommend.

Okay puzzler. Painful and cringy plot

The puzzle solutions take more systematic trial and error than discovering a clever solution. I felt more relief than reward for solving them. The most painful part of the game is the story. Your goal in solving the puzzles is to rescue an imprisoned princess. This part of the game is a walking adventure where you paw over her personal effects and history, discovering her to be a bit of an entitled, self-important slob. And all the while you are rescuing her, she insults and demeans you. It's not clever banter like that in Portal, but more just random contempt. Just painful.

Puzzle Game

I read the other reviews before starting.. This game is a puzzle with a woman talking at you the whole way through, you learn her story, and find out about the lost crew. Ending was quick, and a little confusing.. All the puzzles are solvable. It left me with the question was she a part of the crew, or the AI running the ship. You never see any of the crew on the ship. The camp fire you walk out to has a few people I assume the crew, was the one in cyro also transported? questions.. questions.. The puzzles are fun, took me 11 days to complete. I had a lot of fun. Despite how much I wanted to like the voice talking through out, I seen her a annoying. Lots of puzzles.. Take your time, don't let it overwhelm you. Worth the $4.99 on special. Many thanks to the game Dev's. Not a portal or talos game, but it has it's own quirks, and it owns it's individual style.

Heaps of puzzles, mostly very good.

FIlament is a Sokobanlike game. These are the games which, in a nice package, present series of pure math logic puzzles. The puzzles extracted from the game would not loose anything but not true the other way around. Usually Pacman rich story tries to justify why you solve puzzles to unlock more puzzles. Sokobanlikes are like working out: good for you but not quite fun. Filament has least attractive audiovisuals from the other two Sokobanlikes I know (The Witness, The Sojourn). However puzzles are on par with the others. Puzzles in Filament are very good, some are excellent (i.e. seems simple yet impossible at first look), some are ridiculously complex but all within capability of non-savant-syndrome, non-augmented human brain. Single puzzles which take one hour to solve are not uncommon. I did only puzzle part of game, skipping "Investigate" and "Explore" entirely as dull, boring and outlandish. I deduct one star for nonsense eat-a-soup-with-a-fork difficulty introducing trial and error into pure logic puzzles: you are forced to estimate distance and angle in a skewed perspective instead in a top view. Puzzle part I completed took me 65 HRS and the discount price I got it for gives NVSPF*) = 26. Bottom line: puzzles are very good, price is very good and the rest is silence. I played it muted. You'll see for yourself. --------------------------- *) NVSPF (NV Sixpack Parity Factor) - not to be confused with NVHPF - a ratio how long lasts the game comparing to sixpacks purchased for the same price. This metrics has been introduced to evaluate investment in games. Majority investment bodies agrees that NVSPF above 4.0 is a good investment.
