Description
3 Skulls of the Toltecs was one of the last classic point & click adventure released in 1996, now you can play it again in this wonderful remastered version with enhanced graphics up to 4k.

A Cult Classic:

Among the classics of the golden age of graphic adventures, 3 Skulls of the Toltecs is a cult title that has received the highest praise from both the press and the great fans of the genre both for its witty history and its delirious dialogues. Protagonist of the funny adventures in the wild west, of which this is in the first installment, Fenimore Fillmore is a nice and naive gunman who has to face the most hilarious situations to solve the most crazy puzzles with his innate insight.

Arizona 1866:

The action takes place in a very specific place at a particularly chaotic time in the history of the far and wild west: on the border with Mexico, where, in 1866, the Juaristas fought against the French troops of the Emperor Maximilian, while the Apaches and the American soldiers, just finished the American Civil War, faced what would be the conquest of the West. In fact, Fenimore Fillmore is a veteran of that war, who roams the region and finds himself, by chance, with a violent scene in which he ntervenes saving an old peddler who reveals an incredible secret about a fabulous treasure.

The Treasure of the Toltecs:

Mexican revolutionaries, French soldiers, a band of outlaws, a tribe of Apache Indians, the U.S. cavalry, an American senator, a cunning priest, an ambitious colonel and many other characters will test the ingenuity of Fenimore Fillmore in the mad pursuit of a fabulous pre-Columbian treasure, that of the Toltecs, whose key are three valuable gold skulls. Living numerous adventures in a typical border town, in a classic fort of cavalry, in an Indian village and in other bucolic scenarios, Fenimore Fillmore, in his effort to reunite the three skulls, will have, among many other things, to rob a bank, sign a treaty with the Indians, enlist in the army, distill whiskey, build a hot air balloon and join the Mexican revolutionaries.

Features:

  • Classic point & click adventure game.
  • Half a dozen wide locations to explore.
  • More than 30 crazy characters to interact with.
  • More than 75 items to use.
  • An infinity of puzzles to solve.

One of the more unique adventures!

3 Skulls Of The Toltecs is one you should definitely not miss. It was one of the last hand drawn point and click games before the CGI background/foreground ones came along. I bought the original boxed game in 1996 but here it's been given a remaster and although yes it does look really good, to be honest the original graphics still look decent enough in 2019. Though the original did have a well known game-breaking bug at a certain point late in the game which meant a lot of players (me included) were unable to ever complete it. This is a really peaceful point and click adventure to play through as it's a really nice calm pace and with no tense background music to put you off, so you do get immersed in the story. The lack of music shouldn't just be dismissed as "lack of atmosphere", it just makes this one stand out from the rest. The animations aren't that fluid but they're done in an endearing way, and the game is rich in colours. The backgrounds are not insanely detailed but there is enough there for the eye - any more and the scene would just look too cluttered. It's a minimalist style! And it really works well. The voice acting is great, and although the menu is a little different and a bit un-intuitive at times, that doesn't bring the experience down at all. Some of the branching questions can be a little bit tiresome - especially one where you have to name the suspect cowboy, but again, this really isn't anything that should put you off. The game also has a few real-world references but it isn't trying to be anything that it's not - they're just fun to see in there. I would now insert something like "this game is similar to..." but it is too unique! There isn't anything I can directly compare it to - and I've played almost every 90's point and click adventure there was. With just enough cut scenes to move things along, the original storyline, the overall peaceful play through, this is one that if you missed it the first time round, you should not miss again.

Dreadful remaster of an "Ok" game

The original game is ok, like a low budget LucasArts style comedy adventure. However the "remastering" is dreadful. The graphics are a mixture of redrawn and simplistically upscaled, including - rather bizarrely - one character with a redrawn head and a blurrily upscaled body. The game engine is buggy and does not properly respect 4:3 resolutions even if you choose them, the result being that you are essentially forced to play in widescreen. This wouldn't be so bad if any care had been taken over the widescreen conversion. There are numerous visual bugs including sprites surrounded by a white box which was meant to be transparent, sprites that are misaligned and end up with a "seam" around them and bugs introduced by the horizontal+ conversion to widescreen. This would have scored better if they'd included the original version as an extra. The remaster allows you to turn off the enhanced graphics but all this does is exchange the upscaled graphics for the originals so it doesn't help with the bugs. The sound is pretty terrible too, with some characters sounding like their clips have been converted to mp3 repeatedly at the lowest quality settings. I'm not sure how this could have occurred because that kind of compression wasn't used in games in 1996 as far as I am aware. My guess is that they've actually applied some noise reduction software in an extremely heavy handed way. Personally I would have preferred noisy voice files as an alternative to the characters sounding like they're under water but maybe that's just me. This is a truly dreadful cash in of a remaster only topped by the Simon the Sorcerer remasters in terms of laziness.

Disappointing title

Although this game has some great humour and hilarious situations, it is let down by the slow, clunky interface. The hero takes his sweeeeeet time when moving from location to location and the various animations (eg when you reach the fort) get tiring very quickly. The lack of keyboard shortcuts is a downside and a big negative is the cramped inventory, in which you can only see 5 items, while you have to carry around dozens of items. There are also often situations with obvious solutions that require the unreasonable use of the 'move' verb, instead of the obvious 'pick up' or 'use'. The puzzles are a bit hit and miss and I consider them to be on the difficult side. Although you cannot die or get stuck in this game, there are dialogues with precious clues which disappear after hearing them once, so you had better have eidetic memory or take notes! The graphics are cartoony but the choice of colour makes them tiring to the eyes. There is very little music and the voice acting is ok-ish. Overall, avoid this one, or get it when discounted and have a walkthrough handy.

Skip it

The 'puzzles' are terrible and mostly guesswork. It has no real jokes but seems to think it's funny.
