Very fun racing game with power-ups
I personally prefer racing games with guns/power-ups to those "classical". And I'm happy to tell you that Excessive Speed makes almost everything, that should be done, to make the game from this "sub-genre" fun. I like the variety of tracks, which are very distinctive (in terms of look and riding them). Plus those small details like flying UFOs on the track in space or fishes in underwater level. They all look great. Cars are ok. Some of them have a bit of a "futuristic" vibe, others are "parodies" of existing vehicles, with twisted names. And they are definitely different in driving (my only complaint is, that some of them are becoming rather obsolete when you unlock some new ones). There is also a nice variety of power-ups - rockets, missiles, machine guns, mines, oil etc - many "classical" things you can find in other games like that, plus some interesting oddities, like the automatically working...earthquake. Game modes are not numerous, but quite well developed. Track Hunter is focused on three types of challenges (normal race, time race and ride with the bomb, where you need to drive carefully but fast enough to fit in the time limit) for each track. Gaining three stars (one star for each challenge) unlocks a new track. When you unlock enough tracks, there is also available grand prix, where for winning the next races, you can unlock new cars. And the toughest championship, where you must be first on every track in the game. And of course multiplayer mode (modes are more or less similar to those from Track Hunter) - I really like the fact that you can decide for 2 players if you wish to split the screen horizontally or vertically. Playing in 4 players is more tricky, but doable. Sadly, there is only local multiplayer, so no LAN, no internet multi... Probably one of the biggest lacks in the game. But overall, it's an extremely fun game! Plus GOG version works really nicely on modern hardware (the original was very capricious in this matter).
