  • Over 30 levels of heavy-duty run-and-gun shoot-and-forget 2D platforming fun!

Overview:

Duke Nukem
Every great hero has a humble beginning. Go back to the very roots of the King of Badassery, Duke Nukem. You’ve been called on a top secret mission to save the world from the brilliantly evil Dr. Proton and his Techbot army! Originally conceived as three seperate episodes, Duke Nukem will take you all the way through a demolished city, a secret moonbase, and, finally, the very future of Earth itself! Are you man enough to step into the butt-kicking boots of Duke Nukem?

Duke Nukem 2
After a triumphant return from the previous assignment, our main man Duke decides to write a book (“Why I’m So Great") in his spare time and take some well-deserved time off. Our hero’s rest and book tour was not meant to last for too long, though. He got snatched by alien invaders right in the middle of a TV interview! The plan was as simple as it was devious: turn Duke into a zombie using the Encephalosucker and take over the world! Get out of the alien-infested jail and kick those slimy alien butts back to whence they came!

Solid platformers

Posted on 2012-12-06 07:16:26 byhansappel's avatarhansappel:

Duke Nukem 1 has no difficulty levels, no music, PC speaker sound effects (you know those beepy "DOS sounds"), no 2 player mode, no level editor and no way to save your game inside the sometimes lengthy levels.
But it's still a great game for its time. It's also quite easy, so I don't think you'll have to replay the levels that often. Sometimes it can be a little confusing to knowread more where you're supposed to go because the levels are rather non-linear in there design, but there is no annoying time limit like there is in many Super Mario games and the first Jazz Jackrabbit.
The game is neither a hectic gun fest like Contra or a jumping challenge, it's just a fun 2D world to explore with nice stylised EGA graphics.
Duke Nukem 2 adds music, sound card support, difficulty levels and more weapons. It's maybe a more "warlike" platformer than Duke Nukem 1, but it's still no Contra. Like the first game, it's a solid product. I think I like the "feel" of Duke Nukem 1 more, but that's probably just nostalgia talking.

2 Classic Platformers

These 2 Platformers define what it means to be a platformer on PC. In my opinion, Duke Nukem 2 is the Super Mario Brothers of DOS (Not those Giana Sisters).
Duke Nukem 1 has no Music, PC Speaker Sound, and no options other than Play, Save, Load and Quit. It has a low color count, but they made the best from the technology, and they did it wonderfully.
Duke Nukem 2 is an improvementread more in literally every way. 256 Colors, Flawless Graphics, Music, Sound Effects with the Sound Blaster, it is great. It also allowed for different Difficulty Settings, as well as a TON of bonus items. Remember, this game has a score meter, so once you play through it, play it again and look for all the secrets to get your score the highest possible.
All told I give these 2 great games 5 out of 5 Stars, and I HIGHLY recommend that you buy them.

classic platformers

What you see is what you get - 2 platform shooters with large levels, lots of shooting, boss fights, hidden powerups, flying sequences, and more. The visuals are dated but clear, and they're diverse enough to remain interesting throughout the game. The gameplay isn't anything special now, but it's solid and well rounded. FM sound and music are up to Apogee's usual standards. Althoughread more Duke Nukem is not as polished as the greatest Japanese console platformers, it's hard to think of another PC platformer from its era that got so much right. It's a great example of what made Apogee the king of shareware. If you like the first couple levels, you'll enjoy it from start to finish.
Duke Nukem didn't start pushing the taste envelope until Duke Nukem 3D. To the best of my memory, you won't see him cursing, womanizing, or throwing around pop culture references in these games. Pure run-and-gun.
I'm writing from memory of the original releases. I can't comment on technical quality.
