Description
Drox Operative 2 is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Linux.

Eons ago the Drox crushed and enslaved the ancient races and ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was so devastating that the Drox are now extinct. The Drox Operative guild, now fully independent, survived.

Newer races emerged and thrived in the power void ... for a while. Then the ancients returned. The wars were devastating, but with the Drox Operatives on their side, the ancients were beaten back and a truce was established.

Since the devastation, a 4th wave of sentient races are emerging in the galaxy. Unlike previous waves, there are thousands in this one and no one knows anything about them. In the new space race, the ancient, mature, and young races are all scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy through diplomacy, technology, war, and any other means necessary.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage an empire, you are after all the captain of a single starship. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the deadliest ship in the known universe. Who will you back as an Operative? The ancient, mature, or young races? The pacifist or militaristic races? The xenophile or xenophobe races? The races that value freedom or the races that use slave labor? The strong or the weak? Your actions and inactions will impact trillions of alien lives!

Faster, wilder, livelier!

Drox Operative 2 is a sequel to the most wonderfully bizarre game in Soldak's catalogue of living world ARPGs. You the player are a spy playing an ARPG within an active 4X game being played by the computer factions. But now everything is bigger, faster, and crazier. The premise is you're a member of the Drox, a Bene Gesserit-style organization that manipulates the governments busy colonizing the galaxy from the shadows. You the player present yourself to them as an elite mercenary for hire in their ongoing war, but your true motive is to make sure whatever government manages to come out on top, they will be firmly in the pocket of the Drox. Like all Soldak games, the procedurally generated galaxy is very much alive and does not wait for you. Leave a mission for too long and it could expire. Allow a space monster too much free reign and it could amass an army of offspring. Fail to come to an ally's defense in time and they could be wiped out. The game is controlled through an ARPG-like interface, but the recommended controls use WASD for tank-style movement. Be ready for this game to be a lot faster than any previous Soldak game, the ships move faster, their fired projectiles move faster, it definitely leans more heavily in the the ACTION part of ARPG. But it's not all Diablo, it also has a generous helping of "The Last Federation." Selectively choosing which missions to take isn't the only way you'll influence the 4X war, you'll be planting spies, sponsoring diplomatic missions, taking on AI-controlled faction ships as companions, and so on until the political situation is right where the Drox want it. And then you roll up a higher-level sector to run with all your experience and equipment carried over. The main downsides are the aging indie production values and all the little ways it makes clear this engine was made for a fantasy ARPG, like how items go "plop" in space. A truly unique game and one of the best, highly recommended!

Drox Operative is back!

As for now, it's just the same game BUT BETTER! Enhanced visuals, more content and faster than the old loved one. I bought it not only because of the improvements, but also to support a classic game company that sticks with it's own ideas and philosophy (which is kinda weird these days). Congratulations Soldak Games and good luck!

Very Fun For a Limited Time

This is a very fun game but gets old quickly. At the novelty stage it is quite entertaining. It soon turns to grind since after "winning" a stage you get another stage with more of the same, etc etc etc. While there are a number of "win" options, very few are paractical in any reasonable time and "kill all" is usually what you end up with. At a low price its definitely worth a try.

Worth it

Dived into my first play through for over six hours with friends also playing for the first time. Diablo in space totally works and the soundtrack scratched a very niche itch. I only found out about this studio this week but their games are awesome. It’s like something straight out of 1992. And it’s super weird getting nostalgic over a first time experience. I hope this studio continues to make amazing games!!! Great job!!!!!

Better than just "make number go up"

This is an ARPG with a 4X game going on in the background. What a beautiful concept. You play the captain of a single ship, and your job is not to conquer the galaxy, but rather pick the winners and losers in each and every sector. It's your job to ensure the guild of Drox Operatives continues to rule the galaxy from behind the scenes. And you mostly do that by blowing things up, finding loot, and leveling up. If you'll excuse the tangent, in Path of Exile, for instance, you go through the same story with every character just to level up enough to get to the endgame content. In this game, the story can change wildly. In a Small sector with 12 races, the diplomacy screen made my head spin, but it eventually settled into two alliances battling for control of the sector. At other times, it can be complete chaos - all out war, or just moving that last piece into place for a diplomatic victory. It's all great stuff. Well, not _all_ great stuff. There are some minor complaints. Your inventory can fill up fairly quickly, and while being able to sort it helps, you're still going to lose track of things if you're not careful. The early game can be a real drag just trying to find everyone, so I tend to stick to smaller sectors to keep the pace up. I get the feeling that playing on large sectors will just lead to long slogs where you need to exterminate dozens of planets. I'm also not a fan of how some builds just aren't possible out of the gate - You need to do some grinding, I think, before you can make a ship that gets through life by ramming into it head-on. These are all minor complaints, though. The game is just as good, if not better, than it was a decade ago and I am happy to continue to support this developer.
