Die By The Clumsily Swung Sword!

DBTS is a very fun game sporting a rather unique method of fighting! The player can simply play using the keyboard and numpad keys to perform several pre-recorded swings and chops or (more interestingly) he or she can make use of the VSIM controls. This basically means you can use either the mouse or joystick to "guide" your sword through the air. You can also opt to still use the keypad but instead of three or so different moves you can now chop in any direct depending on the keypad number you choose (logically the "7" key will do a high cut to the left while a "3" will do a low right swing). Playing with the mouse to guide your swordarm is crazy fun WHEN it goes smoothly! Sometimes the challenge of having to strategically move your Warrior useing the WSAD keys whilst making sure you aren't just slicing up thin air can prove very difficuly, especially while fighting multiple bad guys that can be pretty unrelenting in their attacks! The story is pretty standard; Kobolds and Orcs hijack your pretty girlfriend during a romantic campfire soiree and it is your job to go and get her back (preferably eviscerating as many bad guys on the way as possible). Aside from the main quests you can also fight in several special Arena's (online or offline). This is especially fun since it offers quick gratification plus you can choose whatever character you want to play (so you can finally play an Ogre that clubs a little kobold ten miles into the air!). One of my personal favorites is a small arena filled with vicious blades swinging from right to left. You can't help but giggle when your opponent accidently gets in the path of one of these blades and gets his Orcish head cut off! All in all a very fun game (especially versus a friend that also struggles with the controls preferably ;-) ) as long as you can live with a steep learning curve (you'll run around like a mad man swinging your sword all over the place until you learn how to accurately slice & dice!)

Most realistic sword fighting game EVER!

I have never played a better "sword fighting" game than Die By The Sword. While the controls take a while to get used to, THEY MAKE SENSE! Being able to control your swings, where they go, how fast, being able to do feints, targeted shots, block, ripostes, etc. What other game gives you that type of control? For those who haven't played, you use the Number Pad of your keyboard (which makes Laptop play a little difficult, unless you buy one of those USB number pad extensions) to control the direction of your sword swing. 7-8-9 is a high swing (left middle right), 4-5-6 is middle swing, 1-2-3 is a low swing. If you swing all the way left, then all the way back right, you get the most power in your swing. If you cut short, it's not as damaging of a swing. Very intuitive, very fun. The game was ahead of its time, and is still unique in play to be extremely enjoyable. And *definately* worth a $6 investment!

Hilarous Multi-player controls

In this game there is an option to control your character with your mouse... Or rather, to control his sword-arm with your mouse... Something that is completely impossible to do but hilarious to try; especially if you are duelling against one of your friends with the same controls. Also try the new multi-player options from the expansion that lets your player as larger or smaller characters, effectively making it impossible to hit anything whatsoever! Also make sure to read the manual boasting about the revolutionizing new way to control your character! Pure genius I tell you!

Sword Play in a Fun Way!!!

Die by the Sword was a unique and novel idea when it came out a many year ago. I remember sitting down at first and messing with the unique mouse controlled swordplay. I will admit at first it is odd and hard to understand, but if you give it some time and practice you will find yourself doing sweeter combos than in some modern weapon based fighters. Not only all this but with the move editor you could make the truly awesome and outlandish sword styles. This is a must have for action game fans and anyone who loves to dismember foes in stylized fashion.

Most underrated classic

I really don't like a whole lot of old games here. But this game is still awesome even after so many years. Its the only game like it with a realistic sword movement that has yet to be repeated. I never found it clumsy all the years I been a fan of the game. The quest is linear but awesome to play and play arena online with a friend is a very challenging and fun experience. Most of the characters are completely different. This is a must buy. Every time I show this game to people they all love it. The controls are hard to learn at first because it is something innovative but once you learn what the game is trying to do it is a blast. Too bad more games didnt follow suit to this concept. I can imagine playing a game like Oblivion or AOC with realistic sword fighting except pressing one button to make a player swing.
