Description
Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world!

Now, over twenty years later, Day of the Tentacle is back in a remastered edition that features all new hand-drawn, high resolution artwork, with remastered audio, music and sound effects (which the original 90s marketing blurb described as ‘zany!’)

Players are able to switch back and forth between classic and remastered modes, and mix and match audio, graphics and user interface to their heart's desire. We’ve also included a concept art browser, and recorded a commentary track with the game’s original creators Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.

Day of the Tentacle was Tim Schafer’s first game as co-project lead, and a much beloved cult classic! This special edition has been lovingly restored and remade with the care and attention that can only come from involving the game's original creators.
  • 100% new hand painted, high resolution artwork
  • Switch on the fly between classic mode and remastered mode
  • Remastered high quality voices, sound effects and music, with emulated “iMuse” style dynamic music
  • Choose between two remastered music modes: modernized, re-voiced music, or classic music which sounds just like it did in the 90s
  • Concept Art Browser
  • Highly customizable user interface and experience, with mix and match options for old and new play styles - play with the verb bar in remastered mode, or the new verb dial in classic mode
  • Commentary track with original creators: Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.
  • Game within a game: Includes full playable version of Maniac Mansion!

Back to the Mansion!!!

I stayed up late to give it a try before bed. I couldn't be more excited to have this game again, legal, DRM free, and easy to play in windows. I'd have paid the asking price for just the original. Just a couple thoughts from my first 15 minutes... The new interface is handy, easy to use, but there is a small issue that might bother the purist making their kids take their first trip through time. The sentence wheel is context sensitive, meaning it will only show options that are valid for the object clicked on. This had the potential to give away clues. Right click a door, and the only options are "look", "open", and "close". Click on a clock, and, well, you know. The music is neat, fuller, and higher fidelity. It's not the original music, so the familiar hooks and stings aren't exactly where you remember them. I prefer the original. I really hoped to see some orchestral recordings. The visuals are top notch. I really like the classic art style. It really looks like they just tried to visualize what the original pixels were trying to show. The art feels exactly the same as the original, except maybe Bernard's nose is a little too big. Another nice feature is the widescreen. Again, for the purist, this can take something away from some of the jokes. Early in the game Fred walks off screen and then returns to view abruptly as part of a joke. In the widescreen format, he stayed in view, which kinda ruined the joke. But, thus is the cost of telling in old story in a new language. The greatest thing is that now my wife, kids, nephews, dog, and anyone who ends up in my tentacle proof underground bunker will have a chance to visit the mansion...with pixels you won't cut your hands on, and post wax cylinder audio. Thanks Tim.

Too many losers on this planet

Who the hell gets up at 3 am to play a video game and then rates said game with one star only because it's two hours late? Is that the only problem you have in life? Also, GOG seriously needs to moderate its reviews and add an option to edit a review, the current review system is pathetic. On the plus side, this game is awesome.

It makes me excited for more remasters

The amount of love that went into this update is readily apparent: updated graphics, music, interface, director's commentary and that seamless switching between the old and new versions makes this the definitive edition for all DOTT fans. Like many I thought the Grim Fandango remaster was ok but a little lacklustre whereas DOTT Remastered is everything I wanted (and how the game always appears in my nostalgia-filled memories). For me this version completely eradicates the need for SCUMMVM (unless you're desperate to see the old F5 menu) and I can finally wall-mount my original discs as they're now functionally redundant :) Some good points: - Almost finished and haven't hit any bugs yet (fingers crossed) - Looks gorgeous and in true widescreen. Windowed mode lets you resize the window to literally any resolution (including 420 x 240 or smaller). - Remastered music, verbs and graphics are all separate menu toggles so you can have any combination (e.g. old graphics, new interface and old music) - Includes an Object Highlight button (remastered graphics only). No more pixel hunting for those pesky plans. - Music is much more organic and full. No longer sounds like hitting tin cans. Audio is very clean. - Periodically autosaves; saving early and often has never been easier. - Nostalgia overload :D Some bad points: - The new interface (right-click) buttons move around based on what you click on. Means every time you interact with something you have to look around the wheel to find the verb you're after. - If speedrunning with the new interface you can't interact with objects when you're moving. I imagine 99.9% of people couldn't care less, but it's a big deal to some of us :p - Getting a tiny amount of screen tearing in the wide scene pans. No V-sync option. - Concept Art unlocks through the game but there's no way of seeing just the newly unlocked art. I suggest waiting until you've finished the game before looking through them.

A deserved classic...But...

Day Of The Tentacle was a product of its time yet, even today, possesses an appeal that will pull in even those who weren't born during the height of the early 90s PC Adventure Gaming Era. And the re-master does a good job applying just the right amount of polish while retaining the cartoony, two-dimensional style its remembered for. Even the sound, while fitted for modern PC stereo speakers, remains firmly entrenched in MIDI with no orchestral interpretation. That's not a bad thing. The story is still humorous as ever and the time-crossing antics of the beloved Bernard, Hoagie and Lavern, the off-kilter kookiness of the Edison Family, and the world conquering mechanisms of the evil Purple Tentacle will have you laughing, snickering, or even cracking a smile. And for the purists not to enamored with the modern graphical touch-ups, they have not one but many options available at their fingertips: Original, Pixelated Graphic Style with new interface, old-interface with new look, you name it. Just fiddle around, enter any combination you want, and enjoy. There's something for everyone. Yes, it's a great game that stands the test of time (no pun intended). However, and I'm probably a vocal minority in this, the voice acting is...not good. When I first played the CD-ROM edition, I admit bias slanted towards my interpretations of the floppy-disk text version, imagining what they'd sound like in my head. Still, I cannot bring myself to tolerate it even a little. The inflections and tones lack the sort of deadpan, straightness that would generate greater laughs from the punchlines. Instead, they miss the point entirely. Yes, how sacrilegious and blasphemous of me. That's only my opinion. Everything else is just right. Though I wish there was an option for text-only instead of turning the voice down to nothing. Perhaps I'll warm to them overtime. Until then, I'll enjoy the ride. So will you.

Played this in primary school

I skipped classes in primary school to play this game with my friend. I stayed up so late as a kid to replay it and enjoy the atmosphere and overall great humor. It's the only adventure that is all the way up there for me with Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Monkey Island I / II / III. The concept of playing in the past, present and the future with different characters is amazing and really made me enjoy the storyline so much more. The characters are quite witty and lovable. Maybe one thing that's bad is that there's no DoTT 2 :) Thanks to the publisher and GOG.com for bringing us this wonderful game.
